'We were superficial' – Roma boss Jose Mourinho slams players after Servette draw and singles out midfielder Houssem Aouar for criticism

Roma's chances of finishing first in their Europa League group took a blow as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Swiss side Servette on Thursday. Mourinho's team took the lead after 21 minutes through Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku but Chris Bedia levelled proceedings five minutes after the break as both sides came away with a point. After the match, Mourinho laid into his players, including summer signing Aouar.

He told Sky Sport Italia: "We had important opportunities, but the start of the second half was something that happens too often to us. It’s a pity that you don’t have a camera in our locker room at half-time, because every time I make it clear to them that the opponents playing at home who are a goal down will come out fighting.

"That is a natural reaction, it is something we expect. Yet again we were superficial in our attitude, in our interpretation of this moment of the match. There are players who once again missed an opportunity to prove themselves, for example, Aouar.

“There are several who are on the bench and come on in Serie A with a great attitude, then in the Europa League they come on with this sluggish attitude, like they are not accustomed to being on the bench and then do not improve the game.”

Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Roma will be in the knockout stages of the Europa League but it is likely they will face a side who has come third in their respective Champions League group after failing to put away Servette. Mourinho led Roma to the Europa Conference League title in 2022 and were runners up in this competition last season. With the former Chelsea boss expected to leave the Italian giants at the end of the season, extra games will not make his task of claiming more silverware any easier.

Introduced by the Club in 1910, the white away kit became an iconic part of the AC Milan identity, earning the nickname thanks to its triumphant record in six European Finals. For the 2023-24 season, AC Milan and PUMA present a chic new take on the famous away jersey by taking distinct features of the AC Milan crest and forming a graphical all-over pattern inspired by the fashion houses of Milan and traditional fashion patterns.

Ajax | Awayadidas£80.00 at adidas

adidas unveiled the all-new Ajax 2023-24 away kit on May 26,  the first time since 1988/1989 that the Away kit’s colour is white. Before that, Ajax had a rich tradition of having a white away shirt, but due to the tightening of the rules on the necessary contrast colours of the away shirt and the choice of having two shirts, it was impossible for a long time.

The white base of the shirt is elevated with a turquoise and light pink graphic pattern that sits across the front and back of the shirt, accented with dark blue elements. On the shirt and socks, the stripes, logo, and three vertical Adreas crosses are dark blue, just like the shorts.

The Ajax youth academy ‘De Toekomst’ (Dutch for ’The Future’) has been the foundation of the club’s success for decades and continues to be a rich feeding ground for talent and future success as a football club, and a proven stepping stone for players to the Dutch national team and top European leagues.

The predominantly black kit features silver details, such as the club crest, the club’s sponsors, and Amsterdam’s iconic St. Andrews crosses as neck detail and on the socks.

Real Madrid player ratings vs Athletic Club: Jude Bellingham looks right at home as Los Blancos open La Liga campaign in style

The summer signing netted a beautiful goal to get up and running in La Liga

Jude Bellingham started his Real Madrid career in style after sealing a big money move from Borussia Dortmund this summer

Madrid's marquee signing scored his side's second goal and was a constant threat for all 90 minutes as Carlo Ancelotti's side cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win over Athletic Club in their La Liga opener.

Bellingham turned in a tireless 90 minutes for Los Blancos. Operating as a No.10 behind split strikers, the Englishman proved to be a difference maker, and showed that Madrid can perhaps survive without a clear number nine following the departure of Karim Benzema.

Indeed, one of the two forwards in Ancelotti's new-look Madrid side broke the deadlock. Rodrygo received a Dani Carvajal pass and fired a speculative effort into the near post — one Unai Simon would feel he should've saved.

Vinicius should have made it two shortly after, firing at Simon after gliding past two defenders. Bellingham made up for his team-mate's mistake, making it two from a scuffed attempt off a corner. There were further close moments. Rodrygo and Vinicius both had further chances, while Bellingham created chaos with a series of driving runs from midfield.

Athletic Club, for their part, didn't threaten much. Andiry Lunin, handed the start after Thibaut Courtois tore his anterior cruciate ligament in training, had very little to do.

But it wasn't an entirely carefree opener for Madrid. Eder Militao needed assistance off the field after sustaining what appeared to be a serious knee injury — a sure blow to Madrid's backline ahead of a long season.

GOAL rates Real Madrid's players from San Mames…

GettyGoalkeeper & Defence

Andiry Lunin (6/10):

Unclear if he'll be the long-term Thibaut Courtois replacement, but he didn't do anything wrong over the course of 90 minutes.

Dani Carvajal (6/10):

Handed the armband with Benzema gone and Courtois injured. Scampered up the right side with his usual vigour. Expertly made an enemy of pretty much every Athletic Club player.

Eder Militao (6/10):

Turned in a solid 50 minutes. Needed help off the pitch after landing awkwardly and grabbing his knee. Visibly upset, and could face a long-term absence.

David Alaba (7/10):

A solid showing at centre-back from an immensely reliable footballer. Will be crucial this year if Militao is out for an extended period.

Fran Garcia (6/10):

A very nervy first half in his Madrid La Liga debut. Loose in his passing, and lost the ball too often. Much better in the second half.

AdvertisementMidfield

Aurelien Tchouameni (7/10):

Struggled to assert himself early, but really settled in as the game wore on. Prevented a certain goal with a last-ditch block in the second half.

Eduardo Camavinga (7/10):

Ran everywhere, tackled well, solid on the ball. Should be a guaranteed starter every week — regardless of the midfield quality Madrid have.

Federico Valverde (6/10):

Probably the least impactful of the four midfielders. He can't afford to have too many poor showings; there will be lots of competition in this team.

Jude Bellingham (9/10):

Played as a number 10 in what was a dream debut. Embarked on a few wonderful runs, combined well with Vinicius, bagged himself a goal. Embraced his advanced role with aplomb.

GettyAttack

Rodrygo (7/10):

Got off the mark — albeit with a rather fortunate strike. Will need to score plenty more if Mbappe doesn't arrive from PSG. His influence waned as the game wore on.

Vinicius Jr (7/10):

Probably should've scored in the first half after a lovely run. A bit quieter than usual — Athletic Club defended him well.

Subs & Manager

Antonio Rudiger (6/10):

Introduced for the injured Militao. Didn't have loads to do, but will likely be a regular with Militao sustaining a potentially serious injury.

Toni Kroos (6/10):

Brought on to see the game out. What a luxury.

Luka Modric (6/10):

Offered a chance to run around for 15 minutes.

Joselu (N/A):

Didn't offer much in a brief cameo.

Carlo Ancelotti (7/10):

The first game in his final season of club football was a solid one. Went for a young midfield, and it worked. Madrid took a 2-0 lead into half time, and never really looked in trouble. The Militao injury will be of concern, though.

Everton set to fight back against 10-point Premier League deduction with appeal as deadline looms

Everton hit with 10-point sanctionToffees admitted to financial rule breachClub to appeal against decision this weekWHAT HAPPENED?

Everton have until Friday to lodge their appeal to the independent commission which decided the punishment and are set to present their case before the deadline passes, reports. Everton admitted to the breach of the rules but were disappointed by the extent of the punishment.

The Toffees were handed the biggest ever points sanction in Premier League history and they feel the sporting punishment is unjust given the offence was a financial one. The club's fans have demonstrated their outrage, holding a protest during their 3-0 loss to Manchester United on Saturday.

DID YOU KNOW?

The deduction saw them drop to 19th in the Premier League table, leaving them in danger of being relegated. Many believe the punishment sets a precedent that could affect Manchester City, who have been accused of 115 counts of breaching financial rules.

Everton have four points following the sanction and are now five points from Premier League safety after 13 matches. Sean Dyche's team can boost their hopes of crawling out of the relegation zone by getting a positive result against Nottingham Forest, who have won just one of their last nine matches.

Getty ImagesGK: Alisson

Alisson may have made a couple of errors since joining Liverpool during the summer but the Brazilian has had a massive impact on Merseyside.

His excellent distribution has added a new dimension to the Reds' play, as so spectacularly underlined by his role in the first penalty won in the rout of Arsenal on Saturday.

Alisson has also exhibited a helpful habit of making big saves at big times – it was his ast-minute save against Napoli that saw the Reds through to the last 16 of the Champions League.

So, while Jan Oblak, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Tomas Vaclik and Samir Handanvoic have all been excellent for their respective sides, none of them have kept more clean sheets than Alisson (14), who also boasts a better save percentage (80.77) than all of his rivals for the No.1 jersey.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesRB: Joao Cancelo

Inter's loss has proven Juventus' considerable gain, with Joao Cancelo now excelling in Turin after spending last season in Milan on loan from Valencia.

The Nerazzurri were unable to make the Portuguese's stay at San Siro permanent due to Financial Fair Play restrictions, so the Bianconeri swooped, paying €40.4 million for a player who has made Massimiliano Allegri's defence even stronger.

Compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo is understandably drawing more attention but the versatile Cancelo has been consistently excellent for Juve, offering an outlet down the right flank.

GettyCB: Virgil van Dijk

Andy Robertson has admitted that he has grown tried of talking about the brilliance of Liverpool team-mate Virgil van Dijk.

Just like everyone else, the left-back is running out of things to say about the Dutch giant, who has transformed the Reds' defence and, as a consequence, the team's fortunes since arriving at Anfield for record-breaking £75m during the 2018 January transfer window.

The numbers speak for themselves, though, with Premier League leaders Liverpool having only conceded eight goals in 20 matches this season primarily due to Van Dijk's aerial prowess, fantastic reading of the game and organisational skills.

Getty ImagesCB: Kalidou Koulibaly

Kalidou Koulibaly has reportedly just signed a contract extension that makes him the highest-paid player at Napoli and there is no player more deserving of that status at the San Paolo.

The Senegalese centre-half has once again been immense at the back for the Partenopei, the foundation on which their game pursuit of Juventus has been built, and his dismissal against Inter does nothing to change that.

Indeed, watching Koulibaly win everything that is thrown at him in the air, week in, week out, it's easy to understand why Manchester United allegedly bid €100m for his services last summer – and why Aurelio De Laurentiis turned it down.

As he underlined with his response to the incessant racial abuse he received at San Siro, Koulibaly is as inspirational a character off the field as he is on it.

Neymar has been out of action with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and required surgery last October. The 32-year-old initially hoped he would still have a chance of playing at the 2024 Copa America, but he was ruled out by the team doctor. The Selecao boss has now said Neymar will have to prove that he is fit and "focused" before he will be called up again.

Dorival said: "It is one of the main projects. Neymar is a very important player. He is well aware of that. He is one of the greatest players in world football. Our hope is that he recovers physically. He has a place [in the squad] for everything he has accomplished in the national team, but he needs to be confident, calm, balanced and, above all, focused. He will be part of the process as long as he is fully recovered."

Brazil will face England and Spain in international friendlies next month and will have to make do without star forward Neymar. They are also without Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Matheus Cunha and Joao Pedro for those matches.

The England winger appeared to pull a muscle and had to be substituted in the 38th minute of the 5th round tie at Kenilworth Road. It was his first match back after being forced off early in City's Champions League clash with Copenhagen two weeks ago.

Grealish can't catch a break this season and has badly struggled to repeat his displays of the last campaign, when he was pivotal to City winning the treble. He missed a month at the start of the campaign with a knee injury and then had his house burgled in December. He has also being usurped in the team for most matches by Jeremy Doku.

From Bailly to Martial: Ten Hag taking no prisoners in Man Utd's big summer clear-out

Several big names have already left Old Trafford but there will be many more departures before the start of the new season…

Manchester United are prepared to offload another nine players as part of Erik ten Hag's summer clear-out.

The Dutchman is targeting five signings in his first transfer window at the club – and wants to work with a leaner squad than predecessors Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

That will require a huge exodus before the start of the season, in addition to the high-profile departures of Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata already.

Eric Bailly and Phil Jones will both be allowed to leave, while Anthony Martial and Aaron Wan-Bissaka will have to impress their new manager in pre-season.

Ten Hag set out his plans during a transfer summit with football director, John Murtough, in Amsterdam in May.

They agreed a new regime was the perfect chance for a reset, with the exits of a host of players seen as key to the overhaul the former Ajax manager plans to implement at Old Trafford.

The number of high-earners who have come to the end of their contracts, with Pogba the most notable case, has aided Ten Hag’s squad revamp.

It will have a big impact on the wage bill, which should also give United more room for manoeuvre in what is expected to be their busiest summer in recent memory.

They are closing in on the £56 million ($68m) signing of Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona and have had a bid of £13m ($16m) for Tyrell Malacia accepted by Feyenoord.

Free agent Christian Eriksen has also been offered a contract.

Ajax forward Antony is a leading forward target, with clubmate Lisandro Martinez among the names Ten Hag is considering at centre-back along with Villarreal’s Pau Torres. Ten Hag is also an admirer of Inter right-back Denzel Dumfries.

But just as notable as the incomings, will be the departures in a summer of major change…

Getty ImagesEric Bailly

The Ivory Coast international has failed to live up to expectations after becoming Mourinho’s first signing at United in a £30m ($36m) deal in 2016.

He has been hampered by injuries for the majority of his time at the club – but his erratic performances have been a major factor in his failure to establish himself at the heart of defence.

United are open to offers for the 28-year-old.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesAaron Wan-Bissaka

There are major doubts as to whether the £50m right back will be suited to Ten Hag’s system, due to his weaknesses going forward.

Diogo Dalot has been told he is part of the new manager’s plans, while Dumfries is a potential target.

But Wan-Bissaka will be given the chance to impress in pre-season before a final decision is made.

GettyAnthony Martial

An underwhelming loan at Sevilla in the second half of last season has not helped to create a market for the France international.

He is another, who Ten Hag wants to look at in pre-season.

After missing out on top strike target, Darwin Nunez, United are short on attacking options, which could leave the door open for Martial.

How much the player wants to remain at Old Trafford, is another matter.

For now, Ten Hag is open-minded – but a serious bid could change that.

GettyPhil Jones

Sir Alex Ferguson infamously claimed Jones could become the club’s finest player.

Those words have weighed heavily around his neck – but a much bigger issue has been his injury record over the past nine years.

Unfairly ridiculed by supporters, now feels like the time for him to make a break, with United open to offers.
