Ajinkya Rahane’s century was instrumental in Indian Oil Corporation’s six-wicket victory over Tata Sports Club in Chennai•Sivaraman Kitta/K Sivaraman

Group A

ScorecardA dominant India Cements crushed State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) by 125 runs in a Group A match in Visakhapatnam.A double-century opening stand at more than a run-a-ball between Tamil Nadu batsmen Arun Karthik and Abhinav Mukund put India Cements on their way to 324 for 6 in 50 overs. Arun made 112 off 108 deliveries while Mukund got 86 off 99. After their departure, Dinesh Karthik and Rahul Dravid ensured India Cements went past 300. Dinesh made 42 off 34 while Dravid remained unbeaten on 32 off 23.SBH started poorly as Tamil Nadu bowlers Lakshmipathy Balaji and Yo Mahesh struck to leave them struggling at 29 for 2. Wickets fell regularly thereafter and SBH were reduced to 123 for 6 at one stage. Srihari Rao’s rearguard effort of 40 off 53 deliveries took his team close to 200 but India Cements’ victory was never in doubt.Group B
ScorecardAjinkya Rahane’s century helped Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) easily overhaul Tata Sports Club’s (TSC) 280 for 3 in a Group B game in Chennai.Rahane added 94 runs for the first wicket with his Mumbai and IOC captain Wasim Jaffer in 13 overs. Jaffer made 48 off 37 deliveries. Rahane then shared a 128-run stand with Uttar Pradesh batsman Ravikant Shukla who made 84 off 91. This stand effectively sealed the chase for IOC. Rahane was eventually dismissed for 105 off 117 with nine fours. Cheteshwar Pujara was unbeaten on 32 off 29 as IOC cantered to victory in 48.2 overs with only four wickets down.TSC, after opting to bat, lost both openers with 42 runs on the board. Punjab’s Mandeep Singh and Jharkhand’s Ishank Jaggi then combined in a 187-run partnership for the third wicket. Singh made 91 off 100 deliveries and Jaggi was unbeaten on 110 off 130. Nishit Shetty’s late strikes took TSC to 280 but the target hardly troubled IOC’s batsmen.Group C

ScorecardArindam Das’s century was in vain as Air India beat Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited by 29 runs in a high-scoring Group C game of the BCCI Corporate Trophy in Hyderabad.Chasing Air India’s 314 for 5, BSNL were off to a strong start with Bengal batsman Das and Monish Mishra, who plays for Deccan Chargers in the IPL, adding 131 runs in 21 overs. Air India struck, removing Mishra after he had made 60 off 66 deliveries. BSNL lost wickets regularly thereafter with the next highest partnership being only 38 runs, between Das and Brijesh Tomar. Das was dismissed after making 103 off 113 deliveries. BSNL eventually finished with 285 for 9 in 50 overs. Haryana offbreak bowler Ajit Chandila was the most successful for Air India, taking 4 for 36 in ten overs.Three Air India batsmen earlier scored half-centuries, helping their team post 314. Captain Mohammad Kaif top-scored with 75 off 92 deliveries. Former India batsman Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Rajasthan Royals’ Naman Ojha also got fifties. Ojha’s late charge ensured Air India went past 300, as he struck four sixes in his unbeaten 58 off only 26 deliveries.
ScorecardIn another Group C match played at the Gymkhana Ground in Hyderabad, a disciplined bowling effort helped Chemplast defeat State Bank of Mysore (SBM) by 67 runs.Set a target of 187 in a match shortened to 25 overs, SBM were never in the chase after being reduced to 25 for 5. Tamil Nadu duo Ganapathi Vignesh and Rajagopal Sathish rocked the SBM top order as the first five batsmen failed to cross double figures. SBM ultimately managed 119 for 7, Talpa Sai top-scoring with 33.The Chemplast innings was steadied by Hemanth Kumar after they had lost their openers for 38 runs. Kumar made 53 off 47 deliveries but was dismissed with the score on 102. Captain Sathish then smashed 40 off only 17, hitting five sixes. By the time he got out, Chemplast had added 65 runs in 34 balls, which enabled them to finish with a formidable score.Group D

ScorecardState Bank of Patiala (SBP) defeated Madras Rubber Factory (MRF) by 13 runs in a close Group D encounter in Bangalore.Captain Pankaj Dharmani top-scored for SBP with 46 off 78 deliveries and was the last man to be dismissed as they were bowled out for 187 in 48.1 overs. No other SBP batsman went past 22 on a pitch where scoring proved difficult. Jharkhand offbreak bowler Sunny Gupta took 3 for 45 in ten overs.MRF began their chase poorly, collapsing to 44 for 4 at one stage. Tamil Nadu’s Sridharan Sriram and Umashankar Sushil combined in a 63-run partnership for the fifth wicket. At that juncture, MRF needed 81 runs with more than 23 overs remaining. However, Sushil fell, and Sriram later followed with the score on 125 after having made 46 off 67. A last-wicket stand of 23 raised MRF’s hopes but last man Prasanth Chandran was dismissed with 14 runs still required.
ScorecardIncome Tax hammered Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) by 171 runs in a Group D match in Bangalore.Defending a target of 293, Baroda’s Ajitesh Argal and Gujarat’s Rohit Dahiya ran through the ONGC batting, dismissing them for 121 in 30.4 overs. Argal took 4 for 38 and Dahiya picked up 3 for 16 as six ONGC batsmen made single-digit scores. ONGC were reduced to 61 for 7 at one stage but Sarandeep Singh and Vikramjeet Malik took them past 100.Maharashtra’s Ameya Shrikhande and Hiken Shah – who started with Mumbai before moving onto Jammu and Kashmir – earlier shared a 106-run opening stand for Income Tax. Shrikhande top-scored with 58 off 79 deliveries while Shah made 47 off 63. Dahiya’s unbeaten 56 off 28, which included six fours and three sixes, enabled Income Tax to post a challenging total.

Perera five-for takes Sri Lanka to final

India succumbed so meekly that Sri Lanka waltzed through to the tri-series final without breaking into a sweat

Sri Lanka came into the game needing to win to stay alive in the tournament. Their captain had made some prickly comments – “We don’t try and hide behind the press or hide behind our board” – on the eve of the game. One of their players was coming back from a ban and another had lost his match fee the previous time these two teams faced. One expected this game to be spicy. One anticipated some heat in the middle. One thought there would be a great fight. However, India succumbed so meekly that Sri Lanka waltzed through to the tri-series final without breaking into a sweat. India, after slipping to their worst defeat in terms of balls remaining, face New Zealand on Wednesday in a knockout. The Sri Lankan seamers, led by Thisara Perera, owned the first half of the game as India were shot out for 103. What stood out was Sri Lanka’s discipline in executing their plan to perfection. What surprised you was how easily India fell into the individual traps. And the chase was over in a blink.Sri Lanka had a plan for each batsman, simple in its thought and perfect in its execution. Far too often these days, Dinesh Karthik’s plan to tackle the moving ball, while opening, has been too one-dimensional: He walks down the track in an effort to make the bowler change the length. Nearly always, Kumar Sangakkara counters it by standing up to the stumps. If Karthik has a plan B, it doesn’t really come through with any sort of clarity. Today, again, Karthik began to stutter once Sangakkara stood up. Nuwan Kulasekara is known for his incutters but he kept pushing them away from Karthik’s outside edge. Sure enough, he fell to a delivery that straightened outside off, though the replays didn’t confirm the edge. For some time now, Rohit Sharma’s head-position and iffy foot work has dragged him into trouble. Time and again, he presses that front leg far too across and tries to get the bat around the front pad. Often, he doesn’t manage to do it in time. Today, too, he fell, trapped right in front by Angelo Mathews. The discipline in the plan came through again: For five deliveries (four in the over before the dismissal), Mathews took it away from Rohit before he brought one back in to get his man. India’s other young middle-order hope Suresh Raina was repeatedly tested with deliveries in the off-stump corridor. Raina, who’s recently been in good form, struggled to get on the front foot and paid the price. He edged one from Mathews, which led to a fierce appeal from all the close-in fielders, but wasn’t given out. He poked at a similar delivery from Perera and didn’t seem to get an inside edge but was given out this time.India slid further as MS Dhoni fell after a scratchy innings. In the recent past, he has developed a habit of walking forward and across and poking with uncertainty at seaming deliveries. Often, it has landed him in trouble. Today, he twice edged Perera just past the lone slip fielder placed slightly wide. On both occasions, Sangakkara was standing up to the stumps. As soon as Sangakkara went back, Dhoni walked forward and across, reached for another Perera delivery, got the outside edge and was caught.Only Yuvraj Singh looked in any sort of control. He unfurled a couple of gorgeous drives – one was caressed through extra cover and the other sped away between the bowler and mid-off. He hit a stunning six over wide long-off but fell, given out lbw when a Lasith Malinga delivery not only hit him outside the off stump but was also missing it. And the lower order didn’t last long – Ravindra Jadeja squeezed out to gully, Praveen Kumar fell to an over-ambitious hit, Ashish Nehra was bounced out, and Perera completed his maiden five-for when he bowled Ishant Sharma.India’s troubles had started early once their best batsman Virender Sehwag fell, trapped lbw by a trademark incutter from Kulasekara; the replays showed it would have clipped the leg stump. And Sri Lanka closed in.When the TV cameras cast their digital eye on the stands at the start of the morning, it caught a banner: ‘Randiv we are with you ‘. As it turned out, he didn’t have to bowl in the end. Another one went up at the half-way mark: “Tandoori chicken for Lion’s dinner- Rs 104”. Back in India, at least one news channel screamed – “Umpires cheat India”. It was a day when emotions ran high.

Ponting warns Smith of hard work ahead

Steven Smith is on the verge of becoming Australia’s newest Test spinner but his captain Ricky Ponting believes Smith’s bowling still has plenty of room for improvement after a disappointing tour match in Derby

Steven Smith is on the verge of becoming Australia’s newest Test spinner but his captain Ricky Ponting believes Smith’s bowling still has plenty of room for improvement after a disappointing tour match in Derby. Although Ponting is confident Smith can put in a strong performance at Lord’s, he had some concerns after the legspinner was handled with ease by Derbyshire’s batsmen last week.Smith collected 1 for 87 from 24 overs and his only wicket came late in the innings, after he struggled to find the right line and length for much of Friday. Pakistan have given Australian spinners plenty of wickets in recent years – Shane Warne, Stuart MacGill and Nathan Hauritz all have lower averages against Pakistan than overall – but it will be a big challenge for Smith to replicate those results.”Smithy has got a bit of work to do with his bowling yet,” Ponting said on Sunday. “He probably didn’t get out of the [Derby] game what he wanted the other day. He was a little bit off the mark there but you can understand that with a young guy playing his first game for Australia, a bit nervous and wanting to impress and wanting to do everything right.”We’ve worked a bit with him today on that, mainly on just the line that he bowled. I thought he bowled a little bit too straight to the right-handers down at Derby and got picked off through the leg-side a bit too much, so we’ve worked on that today [and on] a few other little things that will hopefully help him out.”Although Smith will be chosen primarily as a bowler, he will offer some serious batting depth at No. 8 and should provide a spark in the field. Ponting doesn’t believe Smith will be overawed by the occasion of becoming Australia’s 415th Test player – Tim Paine will be regarded as the 414th – despite his below-par bowling in the warm-up game.”He’s a great kid to have around,” Ponting said. “He’s very aggressive and you can see in the way he bats that’s pretty much the attitude he has with all of his cricket. If he does get that opportunity to play I think he’ll acquit himself nicely.”Shane Warne is another who believes there is much room for improvement in Smith. Warne would have preferred Smith to gain greater first-class experience before making his Test debut, but he is confident that Smith has all the deliveries a legspinner needs.”I think he has all the toys,” Warne told the . “But he is pretty raw and is a work in progress is nowhere near the finished product. He will almost certainly have some good days and some bad days. He will have to learn his craft on the run, while playing Test cricket. That is pretty difficult to do. But as long as he is patient with developing slowly I am okay with that. “Regardless of how Smith is handled by Pakistan, Ponting expects to draw on his part-time spinners for plenty of overs during the two Tests. It’s rare to see Simon Katich send down many deliveries in the nets but at Lord’s on Sunday he was given a long stint with the ball, and had his New South Wales team-mate Usman Khawaja noticeably perplexed.Katich’s left-arm wrist-spin has been used sparingly in recent years, but he has a knack of collecting wickets and since the start of 2009 has taken eight at an average of 17.25, having been called on in only six Tests. Given Pakistan’s poor record against Australian spinners over the past couple of decades, Katich could be a useful weapon.”The only reason he hasn’t bowled much in the last couple of years is he’s had a bad shoulder ,” Ponting said. “But since he’s been here in England he’s actually bowled a bit more than normal and his shoulder feels good, so whenever he’s feeling good we’ll try to get what overs out of him that we can.”I think him and [Marcus] North will both bowl quite a bit in the series, just for the sheer fact we’ve got a lot of guys coming back from [injury]. Mitch has come back from a pretty long lay-off and Hilfenhaus from injury, so we’d better look after the quicks and be mindful of how much they are doing through the series.”

West Ham: Moyes interested in Johnson

West Ham United are interested in a deal to bring Brennan Johnson to the London Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by ExWHUemployee, with the club insider revealing on a recent episode of The West Ham Way podcast that the Hammers are keeping an extremely close eye on the development of the Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder ahead of a potential swoop this summer.

Speaking about David Moyes’ interest in the 20-year-old, Ex said: “Of the other players that are on the radar and that we are keeping tabs on ahead of potential summer offers – the main one is Brennan Johnson.

“He plays for Nottingham Forest, he’s very highly-rated and very impressive. He’s standing out a lot at Nottingham Forest in their recent resurgence and a number of clubs are looking at him.”

Moyes badly needs him

While it is true that a new centre-back and centre-forward will be the 58-year-old manager’s priority positions in the summer transfer window, a player in the mould of Johnson is also badly needed by the Scotsman.

Indeed, despite Moyes currently having the options of Nikola Vlasic, Pablo Fornals, Said Benrahma and Manuel Lanzini in the number 10 role, it is arguably only the latter of this quartet whose best position is playing off the striker, with the other three appearing much better suited to attacking from out wide.

And, while the Argentina international has enjoyed something of a resurgence this season – scoring four goals and registering two assists over his 19 Premier League appearances – the £12.5m-rated 29-year-old has typically been something of a bit-part player for West Ham in recent seasons.

As such, it would indeed appear a wise move for Moyes to start planning for the future in the position, and, considering the sheer amount of potential Johnson quite clearly possesses, the 20-year-old would very much look to make an excellent addition to the Hammers’ current options in attacking midfield.

Indeed, over his 31 Championship appearances so far this season, the £900k-rated starlet has been in breathtaking form for Forest, having scored nine goals, registered six assists and created 11 big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.9 shots and making 1.3 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the forward who Sabri Lamouchi dubbed an “unbelievable” talent and Glenn Murray labelled a “special” player who is “destined for the top” average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.07, ranking him as Steve Cooper’s third-best player in the second tier of English football.

So, considering Johnson’s obvious ability, as well as West Ham’s need of a fresh face in attacking midfield, it would appear an extremely smart move by Moyes and his Irons transfer team to do all they can to get a deal over the line for the £20m talent this summer.

In other news: Moyes can land WHU’s next Ogbonna with 18 y/o “big talent” who will “play at the top”
