Impuseram a multa e aceitei. Sei quem sou, quero ajudar o clube. Não quero falar de nada, só trabalhar.

West Ham: Moyes interested in Johnson

West Ham United are interested in a deal to bring Brennan Johnson to the London Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by ExWHUemployee, with the club insider revealing on a recent episode of The West Ham Way podcast that the Hammers are keeping an extremely close eye on the development of the Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder ahead of a potential swoop this summer.

Speaking about David Moyes’ interest in the 20-year-old, Ex said: “Of the other players that are on the radar and that we are keeping tabs on ahead of potential summer offers – the main one is Brennan Johnson.

“He plays for Nottingham Forest, he’s very highly-rated and very impressive. He’s standing out a lot at Nottingham Forest in their recent resurgence and a number of clubs are looking at him.”

Moyes badly needs him

While it is true that a new centre-back and centre-forward will be the 58-year-old manager’s priority positions in the summer transfer window, a player in the mould of Johnson is also badly needed by the Scotsman.

Indeed, despite Moyes currently having the options of Nikola Vlasic, Pablo Fornals, Said Benrahma and Manuel Lanzini in the number 10 role, it is arguably only the latter of this quartet whose best position is playing off the striker, with the other three appearing much better suited to attacking from out wide.

And, while the Argentina international has enjoyed something of a resurgence this season – scoring four goals and registering two assists over his 19 Premier League appearances – the £12.5m-rated 29-year-old has typically been something of a bit-part player for West Ham in recent seasons.

As such, it would indeed appear a wise move for Moyes to start planning for the future in the position, and, considering the sheer amount of potential Johnson quite clearly possesses, the 20-year-old would very much look to make an excellent addition to the Hammers’ current options in attacking midfield.

Indeed, over his 31 Championship appearances so far this season, the £900k-rated starlet has been in breathtaking form for Forest, having scored nine goals, registered six assists and created 11 big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.9 shots and making 1.3 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the forward who Sabri Lamouchi dubbed an “unbelievable” talent and Glenn Murray labelled a “special” player who is “destined for the top” average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.07, ranking him as Steve Cooper’s third-best player in the second tier of English football.

So, considering Johnson’s obvious ability, as well as West Ham’s need of a fresh face in attacking midfield, it would appear an extremely smart move by Moyes and his Irons transfer team to do all they can to get a deal over the line for the £20m talent this summer.

In other news: Moyes can land WHU’s next Ogbonna with 18 y/o “big talent” who will “play at the top”

NUFC: Howe provides Wilson update

Newcastle have been dealt a big setback over Callum Wilson and his injury situation…

What’s the latest?

Magpies boss Eddie Howe has revealed that the forward is set to be out until the latter stages of the campaign, with no specific return date set.

Wilson has been named in the club’s 25-man Premier League squad but will play no part against Everton on Tuesday night or in any matches for the foreseeable future.

He told the Daily Mail: “We were never going to leave Callum out. We feel he can come back and play a huge part at the end of the season. We are taking a slight risk in that because he’s not fit at the moment. I felt it was a risk worth taking.’

“There’s a time when he’s due back but, as always with these types of injuries, it is not absolutely clear. We’ll go more on how he feels rather than a specific time given by the physios or doctors. It’s been slow progress for him since the initial injury. He’s been on crutches. I think he’s come off those crutches now and is walking normally, which is a big step.

“When he comes back, he’s got to be fit and ready to give his best. I don’t think it’s going to be short-term. Hopefully he can make the last few games of the season and really help us in a key moment.”

Gutted

Newcastle fans will surely be gutted with this news as it comes as a major blow to Howe’s squad. He has been the club’s best goalscorer since arriving in the summer of 2020 and losing his talents in front of goal could hinder their chances of avoiding the drop.

This season, he has scored six Premier League goals and Allan Saint-Maximin (five) is the only player who has more than two for the club. Last term, he managed 12 top-flight strikes and was the only Magpies player to reach double figures and one of two, alongside Joe Willock, to score more than four times.

He is a reliable scorer when fit, as he has proven over the last 18 months that he can find the net on a regular basis in the Premier League. This is why fans will be gutted by his extended absence as he leaves a huge hole to fill at the top end of the pitch.

Chris Wood was signed from Burnley in January and he has only scored three goals in 19 league outings this term. Therefore, he may not be able to score the goals they are set to miss out on because of Wilson’s injury, which is another reason why fans will be frustrated by Howe’s latest update.

The New Zealand international will likely feature for just a third time in Newcastle colours versus Everton this week and will do so with a huge burden on his shoulder, knowing that Wilson won’t be back for a considerable period of time.

Yardy, Prior keep Sussex on top

Title holders Sussex chalked up their third successive win of the Friends Provident t20 South Group by edging a tense local derby against Kent by four wickets

Scorecard
Title holders Sussex chalked up their third successive win of the Friends Provident t20 South Group by edging a tense local derby against Kent by four wickets and with only two balls remaining in Tunbridge Wells. Visiting skipper Michael Yardy pulled a slower-ball bouncer from Azhar Mahmood to the ropes at deep backward square to spark a pitch invasion from a near-6,000 crowd at the Royal Spa Town club ground.Chasing Kent’s workmanlike if unspectacular total of 163 for 5, Sussex made the best of starts through New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum and Matt Prior, who raced to 55 inside eight overs before the Spitfires finally struck. McCullum, on 16 from 19 balls and with three fours, clipped one from James Tredwell high to deep midwicket where Joe Denly ran round from long-on to take the catch.Denly and Tredwell, who bagged 2 for 32, combined again in near-identical fashion to account for Murray Goodwin (nine) then Prior, having hit seven fours and a six from 34 balls, missed out on his 50 by three runs when mistiming a drive against Darren Stevens to be snaffled at short midwicket.Luke Wright misread one from wrist spinner Malinga Bandara to be bowled for 21 and with five overs remaining Sussex required a further 44 with six wickets in hand. Bandara also struck in his final over to finish with 2 for 34. Drawing Chris Nash down the pitch, he turned one through the gate to peg back off stump and send the right-hander packing for a useful 24 from 11 balls.Joe Gatting (eight) fell in the penultimate over but, with only four needed from the final over, Yardy wrapped up a man-of-the-match display by hitting the winning blow to finish unbeaten on 36 from 23 balls. After playing out a maiden from Robin Martin-Jenkins’ first over of the game, Kent lost their first wicket in the seamer’s second over, Denly bowled for five when he heaved across the line. Rob Key joined forces with Martin van Jaarsveld to add 47 for the second wicket inside six overs but then Key (23), in aiming to run a quicker delivery from Yardy down to third man for a single, missed the ball and dragged his back foot to be smartly stumped by Andrew Hodd.Van Jaarsveld also chipped and chased his way to 23, never appearing comfortable on a two-paced pitch. He finally hoisted Chris Nash to long-on where England keeper Prior – playing as an outfielder, like New Zealand counterpart McCullum – ran around the boundary edge and knocked the ball up before taking the catch at the second attempt.Kent formed a useful alliance between Geraint Jones (32) and in-form Stevens, who again top-scored for the hosts with an unbeaten 52 – having scored 197 here in last week’s championship fixture against Nottinghamshire. The fourth-wicket pair doubled the score and had reached 137 when Jones (32), in attempting to pull a length ball from Yasir Arafat, found a top edge to be caught by the bowler off a skier.Stevens and Azhar Mahmood maintained the momentum with a rash of late boundaries, Mahmood clattering three to the ropes in his 16 from eight balls while Stevens reached his half-century from the last ball of the innings with a back-foot carve through extra cover off Yasir Arafat for four. In all Stevens faced only 30 balls and hit two sixes to go with his four fours as Kent rattled along at 8.15 runs per over to set the Sharks a testing target.

Ad overkill puts off IPL viewers

The IPL has an enviable track record in maximising ad revenue by creating, and selling, space. However, a survey by global ad agency Dentsu Media suggests the league may have been guilty of overkill

The IPL needs to do more to engage with its fans•Indian Premier League

The IPL has an enviable track record in maximising ad revenue by creating, and selling, space. However, a new survey by leading global ad agency Dentsu Media suggests the league may have been guilty of overkill – especially in selling ad space during overs, a new practice which, the survey finds, hasn’t gone down well with fans – or, indeed, former India cricketers.Other Findings from the Dentsu study

35% of respondents watched the IPL because of the shorter format, 26% for the entertainment, 13% for the love of cricket and 10% for the celebrity factor.

46% watched only their favourite team, 32% every match, 15% the crucial overs, 4% by accident and 3% to check the scores.

75% said they do not buy team merchandise while the remaining 25% did.

34% said they would not like to spend anything on watching a match, 41% were willing to spend up to Rs 500 and 23% between Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.

90% discuss the matches with friends and family afterwards.

Two former India captains have recently come out strongly against these ads. “I am shocked to see the way IPL has devised new ways of making money,” Bishan Singh Bedi said. “I believe the board has enough in its coffers to run a show like the IPL without ads between deliveries.” Ajit Wadekar called it a “brilliant exposure” for the advertiser but not good for the viewers who want to enjoy uninterrupted cricket. “I am sure even the commentators are bothered when the live feed is cut just when they are discussing or explaining something related to the game.””The clutter on IPL is very heavy,” Naresh Gupta, head of strategic planning at Dentsu Marcom, said. “Brands will have to find ways to stand out in this clutter.”The good news is that, in its third season, the IPL reached 142 million viewers in India, up from 102 million in 2008, according to television ratings agency TAM. The bad news is overall Television Ratings Points (TRPs), a function of the number of viewers and the time spent watching, was effectively stagnant (4.7 to 4.5). The IPL may have grown its audience, but those watching did so for a shorter period of time. The IPL’s long-term success depends, apart from the TV and sponsorship deals, on a substantial and committed fan base and the trick is to balance the lucrative airtime with what the fans want. Convincing fans to stay involved is, therefore, the name of the game. A game that the survey by Dentsu – which has been tracking the IPL since its first season – suggests the IPL is yet to master. The agency produces a pre-IPL study to analyze factors driving fandom, and a post-IPL study measuring fan engagement; this year’s engagement study was conducted during the last two weeks of IPL 2010 (April 10 to April 25) and shows how far the still fledgling league has to go to capture the hearts and minds of its fans.Dentsu looked at the engagement levels of those between the ages of 15 and 30, a key demographic according to Sanjoy Chakrabarty, CEO of Dentsu Media, because it is the biggest consumer of sport and therefore a key target audience of most brands who advertise through cricket. The results indicate advertisers and sponsors have little reason to cheer this season. While 51% of respondents got the names of the brands that dot the teams’ jerseys wrong, more than a quarter (26%) couldn’t recall even a single brand. As for the ads on TV, only a fifth of the respondents (20%) remembered any of the much-maligned mid-over ads, which were introduced this season by re-packaging the time gained from the shortened strategic time-outs.Other ads fared the same: while 38% remembered the ads traditionally run between overs, the commercials that flashed on the side of the screen during play, like strangers sneaking into a photograph, were retained by just 9% of the group. The report accompanying the survey is clear on what’s wrong. “Instead of ads that seem to irritate viewers as they interfere with the flow of the game and thus create a negative image in the mind of the viewers, ads that continue without disrupting the game like boundary boards should be looked into,” it says.A substantial part of the IPL revenue stream is from the entertainment sector and, while this has brought in revenues, it seems to have weakened the brand’s sporting quotient – 26% said they view the IPL purely as entertainment. The study quotes one respondent saying “I watch the IPL for entertainment but if there is a better substitute, then I am ready to switch.”One component was IPL Nights, a show on MTV based on the now controversial after-match parties. A lot of trouble for nothing, it seemed – 80% of the respondents said they hadn’t watched the show and thought the parties could affect the player’s performances on the field. The responses look prescient in the wake of India captain MS Dhoni’s comments on the parties affecting the players’ performances at the ICC World Twenty20. The parties’ future is unclear with the league’s interim chairman Chirayu Amin saying it would be stopped next year though it is protected by a formal contract. To solve these problems, the report states “care should be taken to build the brand and ensure credibility instead of just maximizing revenue. In order to hold onto its traditional viewers, IPL must keep on innovating regularly and enhance the overall experience of watching cricket.”Meanwhile over half the respondents (52%) said their loyalty to a team was based on who their favourite cricketer played for. This could conceivably mean fans in Mumbai switching their loyalty to Pune, should Sachin Tendulkar move to the Sahara Pune Warriors. Likewise loyalties could switch with any of the other team changes expected at the next player auction. And that, more than any other result of the survey, could affect the franchises’ bottom lines.

Conte must unleash Romero vs Brighton

Tottenham Hotspur make their long-awaited return to competitive action this evening as they host Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup fourth round proper.

Spurs had a busy end to the January transfer window, bolstering Antonio Conte’s playing squad with two additions and letting as many as four first-team players depart north London on deadline day.

However, it’s the return of Cristian Romero from injury that could provide the most excitement as his presence amongst the backline has been sorely missed over the past few months.

The Argentinian picked up a serious hamstring problem during international duty back in November, soon after the Italian took over from Nuno Santo – now he’s in line for just his third start under Conte.

In his absence, the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga have struggled to make much of an impact and if anything, have hampered things somewhat.

They were largely at fault for a cataclysm of blunders during their three encounters against Chelsea in January. It’s telling that Ben Davies continues to get the nod over the pair, despite being a full-back by trade.

Valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, Romero is an aggressive beast at the back and that much has already been seen in his seven Premier League appearances this campaign.

He has averaged more interceptions (1.7 per game) than any other player in the squad and ranks second for tackles (2.3 per game). He also leads the way for aerial duels won (2.4 per game) and is even an accomplished passer with an accuracy of 84.8% on the season, via WhoScored.

It’s no wonder he has been dubbed an “animal” by his peers.

“This guy is an animal, I swear. He’s perfect for the Premier League,” goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini told the Evening Standard earlier this season. “He’s played for many years with three at the back and especially when you play with a very aggressive style and play man for man.”

Conte has even described the defensive powerhouse as an “important player”, which only goes to show just how valued he is, despite rarely featuring under the Italian.

Forget about the arrivals of Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski, it is the 23-year-old must be instantly unleashed on his return to the starting XI tonight.

AND in other news, Conte could unearth his next Cesc Fabregas at Spurs in “aggressive” £22.5m-rated beast…

Important documents not with us – BCCI

Ratnakar Shetty, the chief administrative officer of the BCCI, has said the board does not have the original documents relating to several important IPL contracts that are now being sought by income-tax officers

Cricinfo staff26-Apr-2010

Ratnakar Shetty has been placed in charge of looking into the missing documents•AFP

Ratnakar Shetty, the chief administrative officer of the BCCI, has said the board does not have the original documents relating to several important IPL contracts that are now being sought by income-tax officers. These include the three losing bids in the 2008 auction where the eight franchises were bought, and the agreement with Multi Screen Media (MSM), which holds the rights to broadcast the tournament.Shetty, who has been entrusted by the BCCI president, Shashank Manohar, to look into the missing documents, says he has been told the papers are with Lalit Modi, the league’s suspended chairman.”The tax authorities and Enforcement Directorate officials are seeking a lot of papers connected with the IPL and in some cases we don’t have the original documents. We have only xerox copies, which they feel is not proper,” Shetty told , an English news channel. “According to [IPL CEO] Sundar Raman the original documents are with Lalit Modi. My job is to put up a list of documents that were supposed to be with IPL and original documents obtained in each case.”In January 2008 there were 11 bidders (to own the franchises) and only the original documents relating to the eight winning bidders are with BCCI. We don’t have the original documents of the three losing bidders, we have only xerox copies. Those documents should be with Modi.”Shetty echoed the words of Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, that the MSM-WSG issue was not discussed in IPL Governing Council. “It was reported at the BCCI Working Committee meeting that there has been a fresh agreement entered into between BCCI and Sony Max, the amount for which was negotiated. Nothing beyond that,” he said.He also backed Manohar’s view that the board did not interfere in the IPL’s functioning. “The IPL started as a separate wing of BCCI,” Shetty said. “A separate office was set up and several people employed. Lalit’s being BCCI vice-president [showed] his authority and that he was running the show. And the administrative wing of BCCI therefore did not interfere in the IPL’s working.”
