Charity Twenty20 planned for Haiti victims

Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana are to play each other in a fund-raising charity Twenty20 match to aid victims of the catastrophic earthquake which struck Haiti three days ago

Cricinfo staff15-Jan-2010Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana are to play each other in a fund-raising charity Twenty20 match to aid victims of the catastrophic earthquake which struck Haiti three days ago. The match is to be held on 20 January at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.”Haiti’s pain and cry for assistance cannot be over-emphasized,” said Dinanath Ramnarine, president of WIPA. “It is a catastrophe of such magnitude that should stir the conscience of every individual–locally, regionally and internationally–to make a herculean effort to contribute tangibly towards the alleviation of the problems faced by this unfortunate and one of the poorest, if not the poorest, country in the world.”The disaster in Haiti took place only three days ago. Our exercise started just this morning. You could well appreciate the challenges we have been facing in organizing this game in the middle of the regional tournament and in securing sponsorship and dealing with the logistics.”The two teams to be involved in the charity match are currently playing each other in a historic first-class four-day game at the Sir Vivian Richards Ground in Antigua. The game is the first to be played at night, under lights, using a pink ball. While the players may have been focussed on coming to terms with these innovations, their minds will also have been on the unfolding crisis in Haiti.”The staging of this game for a noble cause enables players to appreciate the pros and cons of their own circumstances over which they sometimes have little control,” said Azim Bassarath, president of the Trinidad and Tobago cricket board. “It brings them into focus with reality. It inculcates in them a certain humility and the need to be selfless. It shows them how important it is, as a team, to work together to deal with challenges and to overcome despair and defeat.””Like a cricket game, in life there are also the ebb and flow. Let us all acknowledge that the test of character is when the chips are down. It is our hope that our effort for the Haiti cause would motivate the people of that unfortunate country to rise like the Phoenix and return to normalcy after its cataclysmic experience.”The International Red Cross estimates that about three million people were affected by the earthquake, which devastated the capital Port-au-Prince and caused an estimated 45,000-50,000 deaths.

Zagueiros: Rodrigo Caio, Arboleda, Lugano, Aderllan e Bruno Alves
Volantes: Petros, Jucilei e Araruna
Meias: Maicosuel, Lucas Fernandes, Hernanes, Thomaz e Shaylon

Anderson and Broad put England before IPL

The England fast-bowling pair of Stuart Broad and James Anderson have decided not to participate in next year’s IPL

The England fast-bowling pair of Stuart Broad and James Anderson have decided not to participate in next year’s IPL. England have a busy year ahead, culminating with the defence of the Ashes in Australia at the end of 2010, and the two have put their national commitments ahead of the money up for offer in the lucrative Twenty20 tournament, which will be hosted in India. In a statement released by the pair’s management agency, Broad – who had declined to make himself available for the 2009 edition, stressed on the priority of staying fit to represent his country. “Whilst the chance to play in the IPL is potentially a great opportunity, my number one priority is, and always will be, to represent my country,” he said. “The IPL is a tournament I would like to play in at some stage in the future but my international career is my sole focus at this stage in my career.”Broad termed his international career as fulfilment of a “boyhood dream” and that the chance to tour Australia and retain the Ashes would be a “great honour”. “There’s a brilliant atmosphere and team spirit within the England dressing room, and I want to be an important member of a winning England team over the next few years,” he said.”It takes a lot of thinking and a lot of talking to family and friends,” he added about making the decision. “It’s just how your body feels. We have four important Tests coming up in the next five weeks and then a tour of Bangladesh. It’s a decision I’ve taken to make sure I’m physically and mentally right to play for England and I’m happy with that.”Anderson’s reason for rejecting the IPL cash was similar to Broad’s. “I am proud to be playing cricket for England and my international career is more important than anything which is why I have decided not to compete in the IPL in 2010,” he said. “Taking on Australia next winter is going to be a huge challenge and one that I am fully committed to.”I will be giving myself the best possible chance of achieving that by not playing in the IPL. The England team has a busy schedule in 2010 and I’d like to be playing for England as much as possible.”Both Anderson and Broad have been suggested as likely candidates to be rested from England’s tour of Bangladesh in February and March, but Broad is happy to leave that call to others. “You want to play as much cricket as you can for England,” he said. “You have a certain number of years and you want play every game possible. Whether England decide to rest a few players that’s not in our hands, the players are keen to go and test their skills around the world.”

Instigators not punished enough – Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble, the former India captain, has said the ICC’s match referees don’t seem to punish the instigators of on-field spats severely enough

Anil Kumble, the former India captain, has said the ICC’s match referees don’t seem to punish the instigators of on-field spats severely enough. He feels that too often the provocateurs escape with a light censure while players who react strongly are penalised severely.Kumble expressed his views in his syndicated column after the completion of the Perth Test, during which three Australian players were fined while West Indian spinner Sulieman Benn was banned for two one-day internationals by match referee Chris Broad. Benn, Mitchell Johnson and Brad Haddin were involved in an ugly incident on the second day of the Test, which led to Benn’s ban and Haddin and Johnson being fined 25% and 10% of their respective match fees. The clash began with a run-in between the bowler Benn, who was moving across to field a drive, and the non-striker Johnson, who was taking off for a single. The contact seemed incidental, with neither man at fault, but Haddin appeared to inflame the situation after completing the run, when he pointed his bat at Benn. The pair exchanged words and the sparks flew again two balls later, when Haddin drove the final ball of the over back to Benn, who shaped to throw at the striker’s end even though Haddin was not taking off for a run. Haddin and Johnson had a mid-pitch meeting at the end of the over and Benn continued his remonstration, moving close to the batsmen and pointing at Haddin across the shoulder of Johnson. There appeared to be some incidental contact between Johnson and Benn when Johnson moved to position himself between his partner and the bowler. Things became even uglier when Johnson pushed Benn away, following the initial contact. After stumps the West Indies captain Chris Gayle said he felt Benn had not initiated the physical clash.”There doesn’t seem to be any punishment forthcoming for someone who provokes and that to me is against the principles of natural justice,” Kumble wrote. “The Australians always seem to get away. Whatever their transgressions on the field, invariably it is their opponents who end up paying a price. Somehow or the other, teams playing against the Aussies seem to invite the match referee’s wrath.”Kumble cited the example of the Delhi Test in 2008, during which Gautam Gambhir was banned for a Test by match referee Broad because he elbowed Shane Watson, with whom he had verbal altercations before the incident. Gambhir also argued with Simon Katich in the same innings.”In the Delhi Test against us, my last, the one that earned Gautam Gambhir a ban for having a go at Watson, the same umpire and the match referee were officiating,” Kumble wrote. “At that time, the umpire Billy Bowden didn’t see it fit to report Simon Katich who had later obstructed Gautam and the match referee Chris Broad too didn’t bother to act on his own or follow it up with the on-field umpires even though it was very much evident on TV. And as on that occasion, the provocateurs got away in Perth too, with Haddin and Johnson receiving minor reprimands.”

Is this Newcastle United’s new Solano?

A genuine free-kick taker capable of rattling the back of the net on a regular basis is a rare commodity in modern football, particularly at Newcastle United.

There aren’t many players in the Magpies squad that you’d be confident of beating the goalkeeper from over 18 yards but that could change next month as one transfer target potentially aims to evoke memories of Nobby Solano.

The Peruvian was a marvel at Newcastle United, becoming a set-piece specialist who’d always create chaos from dead-ball situations.

During his time in England, the midfielder had a conversion rate of 9%, scoring seven times from 78 free-kicks.

That record was the fifth-best in Premier League history as of 2015 as he left a wonderful legacy behind him when departing British shores.

Solano is arguably one of the most underrated to grace St James’ Park and indeed grounds around the country, but the Magpies could sign a like-minded player this winter.

Reports a few months back claimed that Newcastle were interested in prising James Ward-Prowse away from Southampton.

The Saints skipper was touted at a price of £50m back in the summer and like Solano, is rather remarkable when it comes to set-plays.

Indeed, the England international has scored 11 direct free-kicks in the Premier League and is now closing in on David Beckham’s record of 18.

That’s quite the tally and one that Toon legend Alan Shearer once praised. He Tweeted back in February: “JWP ridiculous ability from set-pieces.”

With that in mind, it’s easy to start building a case for Newcastle to land the central midfielder in the winter market.

That said, it’s not just their quality from dead-ball scenarios that Solano and Ward-Prowse have in common.

Coincidentally, they are also capable of featuring in similar positions on the pitch. The Saints star has played in the middle of the park, as well as on the wings and even at right-back.

As for the Peruvian, he starred on the wing but also played in central midfield and at full-back on the odd occasion.

Blessed with versatility, impeccable leadership and professionalism, while being able to strike a free-kick like no other in the Premier League, signing Ward-Prowse would be a particularly good idea from the Newcastle hierarchy next month.

Tottenham Hotspur: Conte handed big boost as players return

As reported by football.london, some Tottenham players are now starting to return to Hotspur Way following the end of their isolation periods.

The Lowdown: Covid outbreak hits Tottenham

Premier League football has seen disruptions over the past couple of weeks due to intensifying worries regarding the Omnicron variant of COVID-19. English clubs have seen a rise in cases, which has even led to games being called off.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

After Spurs stated that eight players had tested positive for the virus, the club’s Europa Conference League match against Rennes was called off. This was followed by the postponement of the Lilywhites’ away fixture to Brighton on Sunday.

This comes after Spurs’ match against Burnley at Turf Moor was also postponed due to heavy snowfall, with Spurs at serious risk of facing an enormous fixture pile-up if the postponements continue.

The Latest: Spurs players return

According to reports from football.london however, a ‘massive boost’ has emerged at last. Several Tottenham players have been able to return to training following the end of their isolation periods, which were mandated as a result of the outbreak.

Spurs were advised by DCMS advisers and the Health Security Agency to close the first-team’s side of Hotspur Way last Wednesday. This came as a blow for Antonio Conte, whose side were preparing for their upcoming game at the King Power Stadium this Thursday.

However, reliable reporter Rob Guest revealed ‘some good news ahead of the Leicester City game’, confirming that members of the first team have been able to return to Hotspur Way following rounds of testing.

The Verdict: Good news at last

It’s hard enough bedding in new ideas at a new club without losing half of your squad from the training pitches, so this news will come as an immense relief for Conte in particular, who will be able to prepare his team for the Leicester game which is seemingly set to go ahead.

Spurs may be a little rusty following the postponements of their games against Rennes and Brighton, but Conte is certainly one to ensure that his players train at the highest intensity before Thursday’s clash arrives.

Perhaps the small silver lining for the Lilywhites is that Leicester have also suffered from similar issues, meaning there could be fractured squads on both sides.

Former NCA official Ajay Jha dies

Former Services pace bowler, who until recently served as chief administrative officer of the National Cricket Academy, has died of a heart attack while playing golf in Bangalore on Wednesday evening

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Aug-2013Former Services pace bowler AK Jha, who until recently served as chief administrative officer of the National Cricket Academy, has died of a heart attack while playing golf in Bangalore on Wednesday evening.Jha, 57, was a fast bowler for the Services and played 52 first-class matches, taking 159 wickets at an average of 30.18, in a career that extended between 1974 and 1987. In nine first-class matches between 1981 and 1985, Jha took 10 wickets at an average of 25.50.The retired wing commander of the Indian Air Force was removed from his post at the NCA following allegations of his involvement in a Rs 50 crore NCA land deal that went wrong. The NCA, it is understood, had sought to acquire close to 50 acres of land near Nandi Hills through the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) for the academy. The BCCI had also paid close to Rs 50 crore, in two installments, for the acquisition. However, following a number of PILs, a Karnataka High Court ruling in June this year declared the deal illegal.

Watson injury concern for Australia

Australia suffered a potentially significant blow to their chances of victory at Chester-le-Street when Shane Watson left the field injured on Sunday

Australia suffered a potentially significant blow to their chances of victory at Chester-le-Street when Shane Watson left the field injured on Sunday. Watson pulled up sore after the third ball of his seventh over of England’s second innings and walked off with pain in his right hip/groin area. Cricket Australia said he would be assessed on Sunday evening “to see how it settles”.In the immediate term, the injury hampers Australia’s hopes in this Test as, due to ICC regulations, Watson will not be able to have a runner when he bats in Australia’s chase. Watson scored 68 in the first innings and apart from the centurion Chris Rogers was the batsman who appeared to best handle the swinging and seaming conditions. In the longer term, it is a concern given Australia’s apparent desire to turn Watson into more of a bowling allrounder. He began the series opening the batting but a lack of runs at the top of the order, combined with his impressive economy and control at the bowling crease, encouraged the Australians to move him down to No. 6 for this game.Ryan Harris said: “It’s obviously not a good sign when anyone gets injured but I don’t know it’s as bad as first thought. When I left the rooms they were talking about him batting but they’ll assess it tonight and see how he pulls up in the morning. You never want anyone limping off, especially someone like Shane Watson who’s a pretty big player in your team.”Watson has bowled 80.3 overs in this Ashes campaign, easily the second most he has sent down in a Test series, after the 115.4 he delivered in India in 2008. Watson’s bowling has been a constant source of injury concerns throughout his career, to the point that he embarked on the tour of India earlier this year as a batsman only, in an attempt to avoid further problems. But his miserable batting form – he has not scored a Test hundred since 2010 – meant that Watson needed to be bowling for Australia to gain enough value from his inclusion in the side and he has played an important bowling role in England.Watson’s most recent bowling injury occurred during the Boxing Day Test against Sri Lanka at the MCG last year, when he hurt his left calf, the same muscle that caused him problems earlier in the season and ruled him out of the first two Tests against South Africa. He had also missed the whole of the previous Australian Test summer due to calf and hamstring injuries. His injury in Melbourne came after he sent down 47.4 overs in the previous match at Hobart, the most he had ever delivered in a Test, and his heavy workload and subsequent injury on this Ashes tour will again force Australia to consider how to use him in future. If Watson is ruled out of the next Test at The Oval, Australia will also need to consider whether to replace him with a bowler and move Brad Haddin up to No. 6, or with a batsman. James Faulkner, Ashton Agar and Mitchell Starc are the extra bowlers in Australia’s squad who could come into contention and each offers an all-round option as well.
