Marsh and Voges crush Queensland

Shaun Marsh and Adam Voges both struck career-best one-day scores to set up a comprehensive 110-run victory for Western Australia over Queensland at the Gabba. The Warriors collected a bonus point after bowling the Bulls out for 198 in the 44th over, the big chase of 309 never really having got on track after Nathan Coulter-Nile made two early breakthroughs to have Queensland at 2 for 13.The hefty chase was required due to the 229-run third-wicket partnership between Marsh and Voges, which was all the more impressive given that they came together at 2 for 16 in the ninth over. It was Western Australia’s second-highest one-day partnership of all time, falling short of the record 257 set by Murray Goodwin and Michael Hussey in 2001.Marsh was initially slow as he tried to handle the moving ball and his first 40 deliveries brought him only 11 runs. However, he gradually began to find his rhythm and brought up his half-century from his 79th ball and his hundred from his 123rd delivery. A flurry of late runs, including three consecutive sixes off Alastair McDermott, took Marsh past his previous one-day best of 132 and he finished unbeaten on 155 from 147 balls.Voges was quicker than Marsh initially and maintained a near run-a-ball rate throughout his innings, scoring his fourth List A hundred from his 107th delivery. He passed his previous highest score of 104 not out and was eventually caught for 112 off the bowling of Matthew Gale, who picked up three wickets. After Queensland lost both Chris Hartley and Joe Burns for ducks, there was a slight recovery from Greg Moller, who in his first state game for more than three years made 39, and Peter Forrest (40). Nathan Reardon also scored a brisk 58 but the regular loss of wickets – Coulter-Nile, Jason Behrendorff and the spinner Ashton Agar collected three each – meant the Bulls were never really in the contest.

Williamson, McCullum make it NZ's day

In pleasant conditions at Boland Park, the South African Invitation XI provided a tame attack as the New Zealanders scored 311 for 6 on the first day of the tour match

The New Zealanders could not have asked for a more hospitable welcome as the one they got in the Winelands to begin their Test preparation. Temperatures hovered around the upper 20 degrees at Boland Park and the South African Invitation XI provided a tame attack to help the tourists get their eyes in ahead of the two-Test series starting next week.Their top four batsman all had time at the crease, with the pair of whom most is expected of – Kane Williamson and Brendon McCullum – cashing in. They put on 108 for the third wicket with both making half-centuries.Peter Fulton, who was testing out his knee injury as much as his batting, and Martin Guptill started well against the unusual action of Gino Vries. The 25-year-old from the Free State has a double hop and jump at the start of his run-up but that did not distract the opening pair, who also enjoyed the pace of under-19 bowler Travis Muller. Guptill’s drives to long-on and Fulton’s controlled pull shots were the highlights of their pairing. They looked to be having a productive morning, having reached drinks on 78 without loss. But Fulton appeared to lose concentration when he lobbed the ball to the cover fielder to depart for 39. Guptill was joined by Kane Williamson, fresh from the century he scored against South Africa in Wellington. His got off the mark with an authoritative pull.Instead of building a stand, Guptill looked in a hurry to bring up his half-century and carelessly played the ball to short midwicket off local lad Petrus Jeftha. Colin Ackermann split the chance. In Jeftha’s next over, Guptill tried the same thing and Ackermann held on.Williamson and McCullum played like men taking part in a practice match. They gave themselves time to get used to conditions before showing off some of their trademark shots. Williamson’s high-elbowed drive was the treat of the middle session while McCullum scored the only six of the innings, a slog sweep off Siya Simetu. The invitation side’s bowlers lacked impetus as the tea break approached and runs were freely available. But after the interval, offspinner Colin Ackermann claimed New Zealand’s marquee pair to ignite the contest. Williamson offered a catch off the bottom of his glove, which Bradley Barnes accepted.Flynn’s 34 balls were the least faced by any of the visiting batsmen. He was fairly aggressive in approach and caught at midwicket. In Ackermann’s next over, McCullum was given lbw, hit in front of middle and leg.BJ Watling and James Franklin batted untroubled as the shadows grew longer. Both seemed certain to bring up half-centuries but it is a milestone only Watling could celebrate up on the second day. Franklin was bowled by a full delivery from occasional bowler Matthew Kleinveldt (cousin of Rory, and primarily a batsman). It is also possible that the New Zealanders will declare overnight as Franklin and Watling were their last recognised batting pair — they would want to give their bowlers a first run on a South African strip rather than have the tail spend too much time in the middle.

We believed we could cause an upset – Anderson

James Anderson has said a desire to prove their critics wrong was at the heart of England’s improved performance in the second Test in Mumbai

James Anderson rated England’s Mumbai win as one of the best he he had been involved in overseas•BCCI

James Anderson has said a desire to prove their critics wrong was at the heart of England’s improved performance in the second Test in Mumbai. Anderson, a member of the team that was beaten by nine wickets at Ahmedabad before winning by 10 wickets in Mumbai, accepted that England had “slipped up” in the first Test but felt that the motivation to “prove a point” had inspired them in the second.”The confidence was always there,” Anderson said. “We just slipped up in the first innings at Ahmedabad, which cost us the game. We performed much better in the second innings there and that gave us more confidence moving forward to Mumbai.”The fact is we really wanted to prove a point as well. It was quite easy for everyone to say we were going to lose 4-0 after that first Test, but we kept believing that we could actually cause an upset in this series. We needed a couple of guys to stand up, and we had three or four who really stood up and gave a great account of themselves in Mumbai and ended up winning the game for us. Moving on, we definitely feel like we can keep improving. I know a couple of guys made the majority of our runs at Mumbai, so hopefully throughout the series more people can contribute. Maybe the seamers will take a couple more wickets, too.”Anderson rated the Mumbai win as memorable an overseas victory as he had experienced in his time in the team. Not only did it show that England could bounce back from a dispiriting defeat, but it showed they were coming to terms with their issues against with spin bowling and their issues playing in Asian conditions.”We were written off after the first Test,” Anderson said. “You looked on Twitter and everyone was saying 4-0, it’s going to be 4-0. We knew it was going to difficult. Then we lost the toss on a pitch that should have suited them down to the ground – and we out-batted them and out-bowled them. I thought it was an incredible effort. It’s certainly up there for me as one of the best we’ve ever had.”The victory in Adelaide in 2010 was good. But that pitch had a little bit of seam movement in it, which has been our strength over the past few years. We’re not supposed to be able to play spin, we’re not supposed to be able to play on the subcontinent, and we proved to everyone that we can do it. It feels better than Adelaide. And it even feels better than the Test we won here in 2006. The guys involved – guys like me and Monty Panesar and Kevin Pietersen say it feels better than that. Now we can really use it as a springboard and hopefully push on for the rest of the series.”Anderson also admitted that he had tried to offer some encouragement to his fast-bowling colleague, Stuart Broad. Broad has failed to take a wicket in either of the first two Tests and could well lose his place to Steven Finn for the third Test at Ahmedabad. But, whatever his current form, Anderson remains a believer in Broad’s ability.”It’s difficult,” Anderson said. “If you’re not on top of your game out here, you’re going to go for runs and that’s what’s happened to Broady. But he’s a strong character. He’s been through this before – we’ve all been through it – but he’s a strong enough character to bounce back.”We knew it was going to be tough series for seamers. Anything outside off stump is pretty much a free hit for them. But we’ve got to try to stay positive about it. We know we can still play a part in the series and we’ve got a job to do, even if it’s just holding an end up for a spinner. We’ve still got a job to do.”England fly to Kolkata on Friday where they will be joined by Ian Bell, who has returned to India after a spell of paternity leave, and James Tredwell, who has joined the squad as cover for the two senior spinners, Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann. Stuart Meaker, who has been with the Test squad as cover, will rejoin the England Performance Programme squad after Finn proved his fitness playing for an EPP match.

Lions make it three wins out of three

Lions consolidated their position at the top of the table by beating Cobras. Warriors and Dolphins are still looking for points after their game was washed out

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Nov-2012
ScorecardLions increased the gap between them and the rest with a third consecutive win in the Momentum One Day Cup, beating Cape Cobras by 19 runs at Newlands. It was their hardest-fought win yet. After choosing to bat on a slightly difficult pitch, Lions made a positive start, reaching 65 for 0 and then 101 for 2 in the 23rd over. It was then that Gulam Bodi, whose 45 was eventually the innings’ top score, was run out by Justin Ontong. Lions lost two more wickets for 22 runs and their momentum was shot. Temba Bavuma and Zander de Bruyn made 30s but were dismissed before converting their starts into substantial scores. Johann Louw and Justin Kemp took two wickets each for Cobras as Lions were restricted to 248 for 9.The Cobras chase got off to a swift start, with Richard Levi leading the way. Andrew Puttick’s struggle – 13 off 32 balls – ended in the 10th over, and then Levi was dismissed in the next, leaving Cobras on 55 for 2. From 99 for 2 they slipped further to 158 for 6 in the 36th over, with none of the top and middle-order batsmen making significant contributions. However, the equation boiled down to 47 runs to get off 40 balls with four wickets in hand, and Cobras were in the game. Ethan O’Reilly then struck the telling blow, Kemp caught behind for 24, and Cobras were eventually dismissed for 229. O’Reilly finished with 3 for 61, but the Lions spinner Aaron Phangsio proved most economical, taking 1 for 31 in ten overs.Despite maintaining their 100% win record, Lions captain Stephen Cook asked for improvement from his side. “We probably didn’t play as well as we have the last few games,” he said. “Perhaps we were a tad lucky to get over the line at the end, but that keeps everyone honest and working hard at their game.”The Cobras captain Ontong was disappointed with his team’s batting. “I thought we didn’t get a partnership going and, although a couple of the guys got starts, we just couldn’t really kick on,” he said. “We’ve got to do some hard work now and get some wins under our belts.”Cobras are third in the points table with one win in three games.Match abandoned
ScorecardOnly 17 overs were possible at Kingsmead before rain washed out the game between Dolphins and Warriors. After getting sent in to bat, Dolphins had reached 67 for 2, with Makhaya Ntini and Wayne Parnell striking for Warriors.Neither team has won a match in the tournament so far and they are at the bottom of the points table.
