NUFC: Magpies closing in on defender deal

A Newcastle United transfer claim has been made, regarding their pursuit of Sevilla beast Diego Carlos…

What’s the talk?

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has revealed that the Magpies are in talks over a swoop for the centre-back as they look to strike a deal for £30m.

PIF are looking to improve Eddie Howe’s squad and could now be on the verge of making their third signing of the transfer window, following on from the arrivals of Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier earlier in the month.

Downie Tweeted: “Diego Carlos has told Sevilla he wants to leave for Newcastle United. @SkyKaveh is told the Brazilian defender is handing in a transfer request to the club President. Newcastle are in advanced discussions with the Spanish club. Fee being discussed in region of £30m #NUFC.”

Delight

Newcastle fans will surely be delighted with this news as it suggests that the club are finally close to sealing a move for the centre-back.

They will also be buzzing with the fact that the player is desperate enough to make the switch that he has been willing to go as far as to hand in a transfer request. It shows a desire from Carlos to join the Toon Army and supporters will love to see the passion from him to get the deal done.

The Magpies need defensive reinforcements to bolster their XI as they have struggled badly in that department throughout the campaign. Only Norwich have conceded more goals in the Premier League than Eddie Howe’s team and this suggests that they need players to come in and strengthen the backline.

In Carlos, they could be about to land someone who is able to do exactly that. He has proven his quality in La Liga for Sevilla as he has been consistently delivering quality performances and that shows that he can perform at the top level.

The Brazilian defender has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.14 in the Spanish top flight. He has helped them to keep an impressive ten clean sheets in 19 games, whereas Newcastle have only kept one clean sheet so far this season – in their only win of the campaign against Burnley.

Therefore, Carlos would surely have the ability to come in and lift the Toon defence to ensure that they keep more clean sheets and give themselves a better chance of picking up points.

Being able to score goals is almost useless if you cannot rely on your backline to avoid conceding two or three goals per match and that is why fans will be delighted with this potential deal for the Sevilla man.

Ange drops Celtic injury update

Celtic are finally back in action tomorrow evening with an SPFL clash against Hibernian at home for their first league match of 2022.

Speaking to the media ahead of the match, Hoops manager Ange Postecoglou shared some injury news that will surely have a lot of Celtic fans pleased and excited to see their team playing again.

What’s the news?

Postecoglou revealed that Celtic winger Jota could make a return to action on Monday after being out injured since early December with a hamstring issue.

He is back in training and now very much ready to join up with the squad again. Whether he starts, however, is another matter.

Fans delighted

Since joining the Parkhead club on a loan deal from Benfica, the 22-year-old has managed to score eight goals and provide six assists in 18 appearances across all competitions, showing just how much of a useful attacking outlet he has been for the team this season and why the fans would be delighted to see him back in the side on Monday if he’s fit enough.

In addition to his goals and assists this term, Jota’s performances in the SPFL have been very impressive as well with WhoScored listing him as Celtic’s fourth-highest rated player with an overall rating of 7.48/10, highlighting just how well he has settled into the team and got to grips with the Scottish Premiership.

Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to say that Celtic would have a great chance of beating Hibs on Monday if they have Jota in their team.

However, given how long it’s been since he last played for the Hoops and how important he’s proved himself to be for the team, it may not be worth Postecoglou taking the risk of putting the Portuguese winger back in the team straight away unless he’s 100% fit and ready to play with no risk of further injury to his hamstring.

Although, with Celtic currently six points off the top spot in the SPFL table, it could be worth taking a gamble with the forward if that will give them the best chance of securing all three points and moving further up the table.

Either way, this match will be a great way for the Hoops to get back into the swing of things and start their year off positively.

Vamos acordar e começar a fazer o trabalho.

Wolves transfer claim emerges on Neves

Wolves have had a positive start to the 2022 January transfer window by recalling Dion Sanderson and Ryan Giles from their loan deals, as well as signing midfielder Hayao Kawabe. In addition to sitting eighth place in the Premier League table and beating Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford in their previous match, things are going quite well for Bruno Lage and his side.

However, it seems as though a transfer claim has emerged on one of Wolves’ key players which could worry a lot of fans.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from Record (via Sport Witness), Ruben Neves doesn’t think he would be able to achieve his dreams of playing in the Champions League as a Wolves player and would not be interested in signing a new deal at the club, with his current contract set to expire in the summer of 2024.

Labelled a “talented” player by former team-mate Sylvain Deslandes, Neves joined Wolves back in 2017 from FC Porto and has since gone on to make 195 appearances for the Old Gold across all competitions, scoring 21 goals and providing 11 assists, which highlights just how important he has been for the team.

In terms of his overall performances this season, with SofaScore listing him as Wolves’ joint-third highest rated player with an overall rating of 7.09/10 alongside Romain Saiss, this shows how much of a miss he would be if he were to leave Molineux this month or during the summer, which would presumably leave Lage furious and would be a disastrous howler from executive chairman Jeff Shi.

With Manchester United reportedly interested in signing Neves, it seems as though Wolves will have to do all they can to keep him for as long as possible if the midfielder sees an opportunity to join a club which could offer him the chance to play in the Champions League, even though he has previously shared his love for his current employers and the Midlands area.

However, with Wolves firmly in the race to end the current season in a European spot, this could be the first step in persuading the 24-year-old – who is currently earning £58k-per-week according to Salary Sport – to sign a new deal at Molineux and get closer to the Champions League one day.

Charity Twenty20 planned for Haiti victims

Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana are to play each other in a fund-raising charity Twenty20 match to aid victims of the catastrophic earthquake which struck Haiti three days ago

Cricinfo staff15-Jan-2010Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana are to play each other in a fund-raising charity Twenty20 match to aid victims of the catastrophic earthquake which struck Haiti three days ago. The match is to be held on 20 January at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.”Haiti’s pain and cry for assistance cannot be over-emphasized,” said Dinanath Ramnarine, president of WIPA. “It is a catastrophe of such magnitude that should stir the conscience of every individual–locally, regionally and internationally–to make a herculean effort to contribute tangibly towards the alleviation of the problems faced by this unfortunate and one of the poorest, if not the poorest, country in the world.”The disaster in Haiti took place only three days ago. Our exercise started just this morning. You could well appreciate the challenges we have been facing in organizing this game in the middle of the regional tournament and in securing sponsorship and dealing with the logistics.”The two teams to be involved in the charity match are currently playing each other in a historic first-class four-day game at the Sir Vivian Richards Ground in Antigua. The game is the first to be played at night, under lights, using a pink ball. While the players may have been focussed on coming to terms with these innovations, their minds will also have been on the unfolding crisis in Haiti.”The staging of this game for a noble cause enables players to appreciate the pros and cons of their own circumstances over which they sometimes have little control,” said Azim Bassarath, president of the Trinidad and Tobago cricket board. “It brings them into focus with reality. It inculcates in them a certain humility and the need to be selfless. It shows them how important it is, as a team, to work together to deal with challenges and to overcome despair and defeat.””Like a cricket game, in life there are also the ebb and flow. Let us all acknowledge that the test of character is when the chips are down. It is our hope that our effort for the Haiti cause would motivate the people of that unfortunate country to rise like the Phoenix and return to normalcy after its cataclysmic experience.”The International Red Cross estimates that about three million people were affected by the earthquake, which devastated the capital Port-au-Prince and caused an estimated 45,000-50,000 deaths.

Anderson and Broad put England before IPL

The England fast-bowling pair of Stuart Broad and James Anderson have decided not to participate in next year’s IPL. England have a busy year ahead, culminating with the defence of the Ashes in Australia at the end of 2010, and the two have put their national commitments ahead of the money up for offer in the lucrative Twenty20 tournament, which will be hosted in India. In a statement released by the pair’s management agency, Broad – who had declined to make himself available for the 2009 edition, stressed on the priority of staying fit to represent his country. “Whilst the chance to play in the IPL is potentially a great opportunity, my number one priority is, and always will be, to represent my country,” he said. “The IPL is a tournament I would like to play in at some stage in the future but my international career is my sole focus at this stage in my career.”Broad termed his international career as fulfilment of a “boyhood dream” and that the chance to tour Australia and retain the Ashes would be a “great honour”. “There’s a brilliant atmosphere and team spirit within the England dressing room, and I want to be an important member of a winning England team over the next few years,” he said.”It takes a lot of thinking and a lot of talking to family and friends,” he added about making the decision. “It’s just how your body feels. We have four important Tests coming up in the next five weeks and then a tour of Bangladesh. It’s a decision I’ve taken to make sure I’m physically and mentally right to play for England and I’m happy with that.”Anderson’s reason for rejecting the IPL cash was similar to Broad’s. “I am proud to be playing cricket for England and my international career is more important than anything which is why I have decided not to compete in the IPL in 2010,” he said. “Taking on Australia next winter is going to be a huge challenge and one that I am fully committed to.”I will be giving myself the best possible chance of achieving that by not playing in the IPL. The England team has a busy schedule in 2010 and I’d like to be playing for England as much as possible.”Both Anderson and Broad have been suggested as likely candidates to be rested from England’s tour of Bangladesh in February and March, but Broad is happy to leave that call to others. “You want to play as much cricket as you can for England,” he said. “You have a certain number of years and you want play every game possible. Whether England decide to rest a few players that’s not in our hands, the players are keen to go and test their skills around the world.”
