Celtic: Talks with Giakoumakis on the right track

Celtic’s talks with VVV-Venlo forward Georgios Giakoumakis are on the right track, according to journalist Konstantinos Lianos.

The Lowdown: Scales announced, two more?

Celtic completed their ninth summer signing on Friday morning with the addition of versatile defender Liam Scales.

Reports earlier in the week suggested that Ange Postecoglou could add three more to his squad, with a versatile midfielder and forward on top of a defender which has proven to be Scales.

That forward could well be Giakoumakis, and after having a £2.6m bid accepted, appear to be making progress when it comes to personal terms with the Greece international.

The Latest: Lianos’ post

Lianos had shared what he knew about a possible transfer on Monday and posted an updated version of events on Thursday morning, claiming the Hoops have a ‘significant advantage over Werder Bremen’.

“What I know about Giorgos Giakoumakis part 2:

– Celtic have an agreement with Venlo in principle for around €3million (£2.6m).

– Talks with Giakoumakis continue and seem to be on the right track.

– Celtic have significant advantage over Werder Bremen”

The Verdict: Giakoumakis in, Edouard out?

It could well be a case of one in and one out before the end of the month in regards to Celtic’s attacking ranks.

Giakoumakis could well be the man to come in with talks seemingly heading in the right direction, and should he sign, Odsonne Edouard could seal a long-awaited exit.

The Frenchman has been eyeing up a move away from Parkhead since April, and Bordeaux have now been linked with a late move, so that could be one to keep an eye on along with Giakoumakis.

Pundit tips Paul Pogba to finally silence his critics this season

Carlton Palmer believes this is the season where Paul Pogba will prove his doubters wrong thanks to the balance of Manchester United’s squad.

Pogba has come in for heavy criticism from many pundits since returning to Old Trafford for a then-world record fee from Juventus five years ago.

There were even suggestions that the 2018 World Cup winner could leave United over the summer, with French media outlet Le 10 Sport claiming his agent, Mino Raiola, had offered Pogba to arch-rivals Liverpool.

Although the midfielder has entered the final 12 months of his £290,000-per-week contract with the Red Devils, he has made an impressive start to the campaign.

Pogba, 28, notched four assists in the opening day thumping of Leeds United and followed it up with another in the stalemate at Southampton.

Palmer believes, following the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, Pogba is set to show why United were so keen to seal his return in 2016.

The former Premier League midfielder exclusively told Football FanCast: “The balance of the side has never been right for Paul Pogba.

“If United get the balance of the side right – defensively and that midfield solidity – and allow him to go and play, he will cause unseen amounts of trouble week in, week out because he can create and score.

“If you put Pogba in a good side, he is going to excel.”

Southampton linked with Sam Johnstone

It seems as if Southampton are already making transfer plans for next summer, with West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone reportedly on their shortlist.

What’s the word?

According to The Athletic’s Southampton correspondent Dan Sheldon, the Saints are targeting a move for the Baggies shot-stopper next summer, as they look for a long-term solution in goal.

It has been suggested for some time now that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side will add a new goalkeeper to their ranks next summer, with Fraser Forster looking likely to leave when his contract expires at the end of this season, and Johnstone could be a superb replacement.

As it stands, the England international is also set to become a free agent next summer, which suggests that he could be a very appealing option for the Saints in the transfer market.

Would Johnstone be a good signing for Southampton?

The 28-year-old produced some eye-catching saves last season despite West Brom’s relegation and deservedly earned himself a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the European Championships.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

It is no surprise that Southampton are looking for a new ‘keeper when you consider that they conceded 68 goals in the top-flight last season, whilst Alex McCarthy hasn’t covered himself in glory in his three appearances so far this season, conceding notably soft goals against Everton and Manchester United.

Former Baggies manager Sam Allardyce was full of praise for Johnstone last season, saying:

“He’s one of the best. I think that’s pleasing to see as he’s one of the two most important people in your team.

“The goalscorer is the first and your goalkeeper is the second.

“He’s right up there at the right level and he’d already saved more shots than anybody before yesterday.”

As a full England international, who is just 28-years-old and a player who has already proven himself in the Premier League, Johnstone could be a superb signing for Southampton, especially if he arrives on a free transfer, so Saints fans will surely be delighted with this update from Sheldon.

Fraser set for Middlesex challenge

As expected, the former England fast bowler Angus Fraser has agreed terms with his former club, Middlesex, to become their director of cricket

Cricinfo staff24-Oct-2008As expected, the former England fast bowler Angus Fraser has agreed terms with his former club, Middlesex, to become their director of cricket.Fraser, who enjoyed a distinguished career with the club, has been a cricket correspondent with the Independent since he retired in 2002. But he appears ready for the challenge of trying to rebuild his old county after several years of infighting and a decade-and-a-half of failure. It was their one real success – victory in last summer’s Twenty20 Cup – that stalled a proposed members’ revolt, but that aside, 2008 was another poor summer, with bad results exacerbated by increasing rumours of disharmony in the dressing room. Off the field, there is no club sponsor after the deal with Northern Rock was, understandably, not renewed.Behind the scenes the club is trying to restructure, with the old committee hierarchy being swept aside and replaced with Fraser as a new supremo, responsible for all things to do with cricket.”We haven’t finalised everything yet, he’s gone on holiday and we’re in Antigua and we expect to sign contracts when we get home,” Vinny Codrington, the Middlesex chief executive, told the club’s website. “As it became fairly public knowledge we wanted to confirm that he’s the man we want and that we have agreed terms with Gus to start the role in January. Gus is Middlesex through and through, and he’s been a great journalist for the Independent and I’m sure they’ll be very sorry to lose him and we’ll be very fortunate to have him.”It’s not a tracksuit job, it’s not about being in the first-team dressing room, it’s not going to step on Toby Radford’s toes,” Codrington added, in an interview with BBC radio. “But he is going to be ultimately responsible for everything that is Middlesex cricket and that will be everything from the first team to grass roots.”He’s not going to wave a magic wand and our cricket is going to be brilliant, there’s clearly a lot that needs to be done.”We’ve got to make sure that Gus is given the tools for the job and is allowed to get on with the job and everyone associated with Middlesex from me to the members and committee have got to be patient.”Fraser’s first job was to rubber-stamp Shaun Udal’s position as captain for the rest of 2008 and 2009.

Exclusive: Pundit drops major Mane v Salah claim

Former Premier League striker Nigel Jemson believes there is some “friction” between Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane at Liverpool.

The pair have formed part of a fabled front three at Anfield, along with Roberto Firmino.

Salah has been with the club since 2017, when he joined from Roma, while Mane joined in 2016.

The pair have gone on to have unbelievable careers at Anfield; Salah has scored 126 goals in 205 games for the club, while Mane has netted 98 times in 220 games.

They both played key roles in Liverpool winning the Premier League last season, but Jemson believes that each player wants to be the key man on Merseyside under Jurgen Klopp.

Both remain vital members of Liverpool’s squad, and they both have a goal to their name already this season; Salah scored against Norwich City, while Mane netted against Burnley as the Reds won each game.

Jemson, who is a Liverpool fan, told Football FanCast exclusively: “Salah is bang on form again.

“If Mane and Salah play together, because sometimes you look at them and there’s a bit of friction there, I think, because he wants to be the main man, but if they can play together as a partnership, they’re as good as anybody in the Premier League.”

Durham have unveiled plans for a £45million development of Chester-le-Street which will increase the capacity by 4000 seats to 20,000 and includes the installation of floodlights.Temporary seating will be replaced by permanent fixtures and phase one of the plans – a small extension to the South East Terrace – has already received planning permission. Work will begin in January and is due to be finished by May 2009.Future plans for the ground include a 150-bed hotel and a new entrance building, which will also include conference and banqueting facilities. The permanent floodlights will be a major move for the ground, improving conditions for day/night matches which are an important earner for the county. Other developments include a TV compound and new scoreboards with replay screens.”The ground development is essential if we are to continue to stage international cricket and positions Riverside as a leading regional venue and Durham [County Cricket Club] as a major local employer,” said chief executive David Harker.Chester-le-Street has become a fixture on the international calendar since hosting its first one-day international, between Pakistan and Scotland during the 1999 World Cup, and has held three Tests involving Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and West Indies. In 2009 the second Test against Sri Lanka will take place in the North East followed by the seventh, and final, ODI against Australia on September 20.

Fabrizio Romano: Everton eye Andreas Pereira

Everton witnessed a wonderful start to the new season on Saturday afternoon as Rafa Benitez’s Goodison Park reign started with a win.

It has been a difficult summer for the Toffees but an opening victory will do the atmosphere wonders after some of the toxic negativity spread throughout Merseyside in the last few months.

What’s the word?

Next on the agenda in the transfer market for Everton is signing a right-back and a central midfielder.

They are close to landing Aurelio Buta from Royal Antwerp but they’re now looking within the Premier League to bolster their ranks.

In an exciting update from Fabrizio Romano, the journalist revealed that the Toffees had an interest in Manchester United’s Andreas Pereira.

He said: “Everton have approached Manchester United for Andreas Pereira. Many clubs are interested in signing Andreas on loan, Man Utd still prioritize permanent sale.”

Pereira is currently valued at just £7.2m via Transfermarkt.

Fans buzzing

Everton have had a difficult summer on the transfer front but this is a report that supporters should be genuinely excited about.

After all, the club have been linked with some rather mediocre midfield players in recent weeks.

Tottenham and England’s Harry Winks has been touted with a switch while Benitez has also cast his eyes towards one of his former players; Sean Longstaff at Newcastle.

However, Pereira is arguably the better player and would offer a wide-ranging set of attributes to Everton.

For instance, during the course of their respective Premier League careers, Winks and Longstaff have only managed four goals between them.

Their numbers from a defensive point of view are also fairly average. The Spurs midfielder completed 1.1 tackles per match last term while Newcastle’s academy product made 1.4 successful challenges a game.

Pereira, however, is adept in offensive situations as well as in the defensive third.

The Brazilian once found the net five times in one season for Granada, providing three assists for teammates in the process.

As well as producing goals, the Man United talent isn’t afraid to get stuck into a physical duel. He won 1.2 tackles per game in that aforementioned season for instance.

Capable of providing more than Winks and Longstaff, Everton supporters should be delighted if they pursue him instead.
