Newcastle transfer update on Williams

Newcastle United have now been dealt a blow in their race to sign Brandon Williams before the summer transfer window ends.

The Lowdown: Williams eyed

There have been a number of reports throughout the window claiming that the St. James’ Park faithful have been eyeing up a move to sign Williams on loan from Manchester United.

However, no deal has ever materialised, and with less than two weeks until the window closes, they need to step up their interest if they are serious about bringing him to the North East.

The Latest: Williams update

As per Football Insider, Norwich City are about to beat the Tyneside club, as well as Southampton, to Williams’ signature, and have struck an agreement with the Red Devils.

He has reportedly been told that he can join the Canaries once Alex Telles recovers from his injury, despite Steve Bruce being keen to bring him to the Magpies.

The Verdict: Blow

It is certainly a blow for the Toon that they look set to miss out on signing Williams, as he could have been a valuable addition to the squad.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-5/” title=”Newcastle updates! (5)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He already has experience in playing in the Premier League and can play on both sides of the defence, offering Bruce depth in both wing-back positions.

Once dubbed ‘outstanding’ by his manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after an impressive individual performance despite defeat to Chelsea back in July of last year, Williams is still only 20 years of age, and so still holds a lot of potential.

Nonetheless, NUFC may have to start looking at other targets now with Transfer Deadline Day edging nearer.

Gloucestershire have announced that John Bracewell, the New Zealand coach, will return to the county as head coach next year.Bracewell, 50, enjoyed a successful period as coach of Gloucestershire at the turn of the century, inspiring them to six one-day trophies and promotion to the top division of the Championship before New Zealand lured him back in 2003.”When last with us John Bracewell brought us trophies and promotion to the first division in 2003. We are very pleased to welcome him back,” John Light, the county’s chairman, said. “The whole club has the will to support him and the appointment of a renowned figure to lead our cricket shows our determination to take Gloucestershire forward. We now have a great opportunity which we must seize. “Gloucestershire will hope Bracewell’s return sparks a revival in fortunes. Without a win in the County Championship, the county was beaten at home by Yorkshire in the FP Trophy quarter-finals and finished bottom of the Mid/West/Wales Division after a miserable Twenty20 Cup campaign.Said Bracewell about his return: “After six seasons on the international circuit I am delighted to return to Gloucestershire as my family and I regard this as our second home. I have gained great experience from international cricket and hope to invest that in the cricket club.”His contract with New Zealand expires in April of next year, and he earlier admitted a return to Gloucestershire was a priority. Bracewell played 41 Test matches and 53 one-day internationals for New Zealand.

Bob Cunis, the former New Zealand medium-pacer, has died aged 67 at his house in Northland. Cunis played 20 Tests between 1964 and 1972, taking 51 wickets at the average of 37, including one five-wicket haul, and was also a useful lower-order batsman. He went on to coach New Zealand between 1987 and 1990.One of the highlights of Cunis’ international career was his battling 96-run association with Mark Burgess for the ninth wicket in the second innings against Pakistan in the third Test in Dhaka in 1969. The partnership helped New Zealand save the match and sealed their first series win on foreign soil.He was good enough to earn a place in the World XI side, containing the likes of Garry Sobers, Clive Lloyd, Sunil Gavaskar, and Zaheer Abbas, which toured Australia in 1971-72, but was plagued by knee injuries throughout his career.Cunis, who had an unorthodox action which made it seem like he was bowling off the wrong foot, had a 16-year first-class career with Auckland and Northern Districts from 1960-61 to 1976-77. In 132 first-class matches, he took 386 wickets at 26.65, including 18 five-fors and two ten-wicket hauls. His best season was with Auckland in 1968-69, when he took 30 wickets at the astonishing average of 12.6 to take them to victory in the Plunket Shield.John Arlott, the famous BBC commentator and journalist, once described Cunis as being “neither one thing or another”.He was also a handy rugby three-quarter. His son Stephen was also a first-class cricketer and played for Canterbury between 1999 and 2005.

Martin slams Gers achievement

PLZ journalist Peter Martin has suggested only “gross negligence and complacency” from their rivals enabled Glasgow Rangers to win the Premiership last term.

The Lowdown: Rangers ease to title

The Gers were by far the best team in Scotland’s top tier last term – they won the title by 25 points as they ended up with 102 themselves, and didn’t even lose a single game in the competition (thefishy.co.uk).

While Celtic were not at their best throughout the campaign, even on their best form they would have struggled to stop Rangers.

The Latest: Martin hits outs at Gers

Writing for PLZ, Martin slammed Rangers’ achievement, and appeared to suggest it was only because of Celtic’s failings that they clinched the trophy. He said:

“It is an act of gross negligence and complacency from a board that should have had their club so far out of sight that Rangers would have had to have spent millions to bridge the gap.

“In truth, they’ve managed to spend a fraction of Celtic’s budget and won the league with one of the most mediocre sides in the Ibrox club’s history of title-winning teams.”

The Verdict: Ridiculous

Many within the media seem to be reluctant to admit Rangers were clearly superior last term. Not only did they beat their rivals four out of a possible five times throughout the season, drawing the other one (Sky Sports), they didn’t lose a match in the league as previously mentioned – that does not come around by chance.

Yes, they were defeated in both of the domestic cup competitions, but they reached the Europa League round of 16 for the second season in a row – a strong result for teams in Scotland. In fact, throughout that run they lost just once, remaining unbeaten against the likes of Benfica and Galatasaray. Celtic can improve, yes, but that does not mean Rangers must be belittled as a result.

In other news, Rangers fans were far from happy with this man’s departure.

Rangers fans slam John Lundstram

Many Glasgow Rangers fans were far from happy with the performance of John Lundstram during their Champions League third qualifying round clash with Malmo.

Having won the Premiership for the first time in 10 years last season, the Gers have put themselves in a position to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League. They faced Malmo in the third qualifying round first leg on Tuesday but were beaten 2-1. Had it not been for a last-minute deflected strike from Steven Davis, the result would have been even worse.

Lundstram, who signed for the club on a free transfer from Sheffield United this summer (rangers.co.uk), was included in the starting line-up, but he struggled to deal with the fitness of his opponents in the middle of the park.

Some journalists covering the match did not spare the 27-year-old in their player ratings. The Daily Record’s David McCarthy gave him a five, writing that he “didn’t have the powerful influence his manager would have hoped for”. Mark McDougall of Glasgow Live issued Lundstram with a lowly four and opined: “Made his first start and had a really poor night. Was constantly caught in possession and made poor decisions in his passing. Not a great start when it comes to competitive games.”

Many Gers fans were not happy either with what they saw from the 27-year-old. These fans took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts on the former Everton youngster’s night in Sweden, with one Bear even describing it as “criminal”.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about Lundstram’s display

Pundit confused as Henderson’s Liverpool contract talks stall

Paul Stewart is puzzled as to why Liverpool are struggling to tie Jordan Henderson down to a new deal.

The England midfielder has been on the Reds’ books since joining from Sunderland in a deal worth a reported £20million a decade ago.

He has gone on to captain the Merseyside club to their first ever Premier League title and also held the Champions League, Super Cup, Club World Cup and League Cup trophies aloft during his time at Anfield.

The 31-year-old has entered the final two years of his £140,000-per-week deal and his long-term future at the club now appears to be in doubt.

Liverpool have opened discussions with a host of players this summer but contract talks with Henderson have stalled.

It has resulted in the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid monitoring the situation, with them ready to open negotiations if Henderson fails to agree terms.

Former Liverpool man Stewart feels Henderson, who is currently training with La Liga club RCD Mallorca ahead of returning for the latter stages of pre-season at Liverpool, may have failed to have penned a new deal for a number of reasons.

He exclusively told Football FanCast: “It doesn’t seem right to me and I think there’s something underlying that we don’t know, which is why he is stalling on a contract.

“That could be for a few reasons. They may have offered him less money because of his age. He might want to go to China, where he could triple his wages. He might not be first choice in midfield, but only time will tell why he’s stalling on his contract.”
