Only one innings of genuine class was played in this National Bank Series and it belonged to New Zealand’s Nathan Astle, and on the back of that, the home team beat England by five wickets at Carisbrook in Dunedin today to win the series 3-2.Astle finished on 122 not out and New Zealand 223/5 in response to England’s 218/8, a total that always looked too small on a pitch and ground that consistently produces high scores in One-Day Internationals.Astle made sure of that when defying all the predictions that batting second would be a danger for any number of reasons. The fact was that New Zealand need not have been worried about such a prospect, they scored 290/6 to beat Pakistan here last year, and that against an attack much more fearsome than this England unit.Astle achieved personal highlights of scoring his highest ODI score and passing 5000 runs in ODIs, the best by a New Zealander. The 100-run stand by Astle and Craig McMillan was the first by either side in the series and bore out the adage that partnerships, especially through the middle stages of the innings with one of the batsmen going on to make a big score, are vital in winning matches.New Zealand made good use of the flying start Astle and Chris Nevin gave the chase and even when losing three quick wickets, they had enough runs on board, and enough time to recover, to stop the rot and then rebuilding the innings. It was a classic example of how to gain a position of complete dominance. Just as the side had used fielding to do that in the first game, and then built a succession of smaller partnerships to score 244 in Wellington, so they showed the required tactical nous in tonight’s final situation.New Zealand has shown on several occasions that it has the wherewithal to handle implementing a pre-arranged plan, especially against key players. The treatment of Matthew Hoggard was symptomatic of the way the New Zealanders have targeted bowlers this summer. Having been on the receiving end of two fine spells from him during England’s victories at Napier and Auckland, the batsmen, and Astle especially gave him a right royal shake-up.In fact, Stephen Fleming’s reference to Hoggard in the pre-match build-up should have been a warning that New Zealand had him in their destructive sights. He bowled only six overs at a cost of 41 runs. Andrew Flintoff was also hit, conceding one for 56 off 9.5 overs and three sixes, two in his last over.McMillan played a patient and supportive hand for 44 while Lou Vincent provided a buffer to the speed wobbles and scored 20 to help Astle through the last stages.New Zealand’s bowlers had earlier cut England down and left them well short of the 250 that might have had New Zealand struggling at the end.

Chris Cairns had his best spell of the series, let his slower ball out of the bag for the first time of the series and looked to be reaching his best touch for the Test series at the right time.Daryl Tuffey continued his advance as a one-day bowler by taking three for 42 from his nine overs.England’s batting was dominated by the fourth-wicket partnership of 71 between Nasser Hussain, who scored his first half century in 13 games, and Owais Shah whose 57 was the second half century of his nine-game career. It was an important chance for Shah to make the most of his opportunity for a long bat after having been able to show out during the 89-run rout in Wellington and he wasn’t required in Napier. Then with the England selectors wanting to assess as many players as they could Michael Vaughan came in for the Auckland game and scored a fine 59 which probably ranked as the best innings in terms of its one-day results of the tour. However, his injury gave Shah an opening in Dunedin, and he took it.The timing was important, as England lost Marcus Trescothick and Nick Knight in identical fashion, caught by Chris Harris in the gully from Tuffey’s bowling. And Graham Thorpe departed, bowled by Andre Adams for nine. At that stage England were 62/3 and in need of just the stand that Hussain and Shah managed.Thorpe’s dismissal followed a move by Fleming to block his scoring avenues by having a close gully and a close cover with point lurking a little deeper. The change only required one ball as the dismissal came immediately. However, at just the stage they most needed to go on, Hussain fell victim to Tuffey, caught by Cairns on the square leg boundary for the neat 50.Fleming brought Cairns back for the 39th over and he trapped Shah leg before wicket for 57.That effectively put the brakes on the England scoring and in the just over 10 overs remaining they could score only 48 runs. The bowlers were backed by another superb fielding display. England, by comparison, are far too inconsistent in their fielding and their poor catching again denied them the chances to apply pressure, none moreso than when Knight dropped a hard Astle drive when he was on 15.Astle certainly made him, and England, pay, but then he might argue that he was fated to balance things out after having some poor decisions against him in two earlier matches in the series.

Southampton agree to sell Angus Gunn

Major news has emerged about Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn, it could lead to a masterclass from CEO Martin Semmens.

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic, Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn is closing in on a return to his hometown club Norwich City. Southampton have agreed a deal with Norwich that could rise to £7m if all clauses in the contract are met, with Gunn now set to discuss personal terms with the Canaries. Gunn is said to have held talks with Ralph Hasenhuttl earlier this year, where he was told that he would not be part of the Austrian’s plans moving forward.

Norwich will pay an initial fee of £2.5m for the former England under-21 international. The deal will hit £5m guaranteed for Southampton, with a further £2m in add-ons. This is £3m less than the £10m Southampton paid Manchester City for his services in 2018.

Earlier this year, Stoke boss Michael O’Neill admitted that Angus Gunn had been “unfortunate” at times in the Championship and praised the shot-stopper for his composure at the back. He told the Daily Echo:

“Angus has been really good since he’s come in, in a difficult situation.

“He’s been unfortunate in the goals that he’s lost. The goal down at Swansea when he had to come on at half-time – then the goals at Watford which were disappointing and harsh on him given the nature of the decision.

“The other two games he’s kept clean sheets, so we’re delighted.

“I think he gives good composure to his defence, kicks well, looks very assured with the ball at his feet and I think there is loads more to come.”

Semmens masterclass

This could turn out to be a masterclass from Southampton CEO Martin Semmens. The Saints could raise some valuable funds to make incomings of their own whilst discarding a player who was of no use to Hasenhuttl heading into next season. With all due respect to Gunn, he was the third-choice goalkeeper behind Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster and stood little chance of getting any minutes in the Premier League.

Therefore, Southampton could potentially get up to £7m back for a player who has been unable to make an impact at St. Mary’s and who had no future at the club.

As the report mentioned, Hasenhuttl did not see a place for Gunn in the squad as he wants to go with McCarthy and Forster, so it is a shrewd move to sell the shot-stopper instead of sending him out on another loan and not receiving a fee for him.

The £10m flop can now play a crucial role in helping Southampton improve Hasenhuttl’s squad. Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor claimed the Saints are close to agreeing an £8.5m package for Brest left-back Romain Perraud. Gunn’s sale to Norwich could now cover a sizeable chunk of that fee and allow Southampton to reinvest cash in other areas to bolster the team.

Therefore, this sale could be a masterclass by Semmens. He’s getting rid of a flop and could well use the funds raised to strengthen Hasenhuttl’s options.

Counter-attacking Lehmann tees off in hopeless situation for Redbacks

A badly inconvenienced Darren Lehmann produced an astonishing counter-attacking innings but Queensland continues to hold most of the aces over South Australiaafter day two of the Pura Cup clash between the sides at the ‘Gabba in Brisbane today

www.baggygreen.com.au16-Dec-2000A badly inconvenienced Darren Lehmann produced an astonishing counter-attacking innings but Queensland continues to hold most of the aces over South Australiaafter day two of the Pura Cup clash between the sides at the ‘Gabba in Brisbane today. There was the spectacular clatter of wickets today that a green-tinged pitch had failed to produce after the Queenslanders were invited to bat first yesterday. But notbefore the Bulls had established a position of command on the back of a 145 run partnership for the fourth wicket between Stuart Law (87) and Andrew Symonds(85). Both players were at their authoritative best this morning as they took their team from the overnight mark of 3/229 to 3/322 shortly before lunch. It was probably a measure of Queensland’s dominance of the South Australian pace attack again this morning that it took the unlikely figure of Shane Deitz (2/17) to finallyinspire a Redback recovery in this match. Deitz is an emerging batsman, and part-time wicketkeeper. But he is not highly regarded, it is fair to say, as a leg spinbowler. So when the twenty-five year old snared the wickets of both Law and Symonds inside the space of eight deliveries to disrupt their association and thentrigger a collapse, it had an ironic touch about it.The last five wickets tumbled for twenty-nine runs as Brett Swain (4/96), Paul Wilson (1/46) and Mick Miller (1/62) finally crashed through a tame Queenslandlower order. Swain was, in fact, on a hat-trick at one stage after claiming Lee Carseldine (5) and Brendan Creevey (0) with successive deliveries. But, having reached a score of 378, the Bulls were already in a sound position. And it didn’t take long for them to thoroughly consolidate their advantage.By stumps, the visitors had collapsed to the grisly predicament of 8/110 – still 268 runs behind and holding little hope of avoiding the ignominy of following-ontomorrow. In spite of a debilitating hamstring injury that left him severely incapacitated, Lehmann (56*) smashed the attack late in the day to provide some glimmerof a recovery. But not before Adam Dale (3/33), Joe Dawes (2/34) and Creevey (3/42) had ripped through the Redbacks’ line-up in an astonishing display. The pace bowling trio reduced the visitors to a mark at 8/57 at one point in late afternoon, inviting thoughts that the South Australians might not even exceed themark of 66 that represented their previous all-time worst in first-class meetings with Queensland.Dale and Dawes snared the first half of the line-up in a shade more than twenty overs before Creevey produced a spell in which he fired out Miller (9),Graham Manou (1) and Swain (2) for the cost of only three runs. Other than for Lehmann and for number ten Wilson (6*), who played the most junior of partners ina swashbuckling fifty-three run stand at the end of the day, the Redback batting was a shambles.Openers David Fitzgerald (0) and Deitz (3) disappeared within eight balls of each other in the second session; Greg Blewett (18) and Ben Johnson (10) failedto build on remotely promising starts; and the in-form Jeff Vaughan (2) never got going.By the necessity of the injury he sustained yesterday, Lehmann demoted himself to as low as number six in the batting order, and spent a long period simply trying tosurvive. He barely even bothered to run singles such was the crippling extent of the problem. But, once the eighth wicket fell, he changed the focus of his inningscompletely. No bowler was spared his considerable wrath. Creevey endured particular punishment when he was belted for four pummelling boundaries in successionat one point. The sad part for South Australia is that not even their captain’s courageous effort seems likely to help them out of the messy overall situation in thematch into which they plunged so rapidly today.
