Kalinic set for China, West Ham to miss out

West Ham United target Nikola Kalinic will not be moving to the Premier League and will instead be the latest player from Europe to move to the Far East, Calcio Mercato report.

What’s the word?

One of many, many strikers linked to West Ham United this season, Nikola Kalinic is set to be another that slips through the hands of Slaven Bilic’s side as the Fiorentina man is edging closer to moving to China.

The 28-year-old has been followed closely by the Hammers, who failed to bolster their selection of strikers last month, and any chance of West Ham reviving their interest this summer will be put to bed this month as Kalinic seals a transfer.

Set to earn a whopping €12m-a-season, Fiorentina have changed their stance of the player’s future following the improvement of Kouma Babacar recently and are prepared to approve a sale for around €38m, with Kalinic joining Tianjin Quanjian.

Managed by World Cup winning defender Fabio Cannvaro, Kalinic will join Alexandre Pato and Axel Witsel at Tianjin Quanjian

Blow for West Ham?

Had this happened in January, the answer would have been yes. However, with the transfer window closing last week it probably would have brought an end to West Ham’s interest anyway- as they will pursue alternatives in the summer.

There’s plenty of strikers available in European football that could be the right fit for West Ham and Fiorentina’s initial reluctance to sell, and the high price he will move to China for, would have priced the Hammers out of a deal anyway.

Still, it’s another player that could have been side and a move that failed to materialise, which may have been crucial if the Hammers hadn’t improved their form this calendar year and risen into the top-half of the Premier League.

Draxler’s epic showing vs. Barcelona a sickener for Arsenal

Arsenal fans must have been watching Paris Saint-Germain’s demolition of Barcelona last night while wearing expressions of anger. ‘Why?’ you may ask – well it’s not because the Parisians showed them how to out-play a genuine European giant, rather that Julian Draxler put in the sort of performance that must have brought much frustration for everyone associated with the Gunners.

[ad_pod id=’now-tv’ align=’centre’]

The German joined PSG during January in arguably the biggest transfer on the continent, seemingly putting an end to those persistent links with the London club. The 23-year-old attacker had been aligned with Arsene Wenger’s side window after window – there were even suggestions during this winter that he may swap Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen Arena for the Emirates Stadium – and after watching him contribute to mauling Barca, it really does look like another opportunity missed.

While Angel di Maria has widely been hailed as the Man of the Match for his display at the Parc des Princes, Draxler was heavily involved in all that was good about the Ligue 1 champions’ attacking play, netting a vital goal and completing three dribbles. On top of this, he made the joint-highest number of interceptions (four) of any player on the pitch, while his 54 touches show how involved in the play he was.

Yet more ammo for the #WengerOut brigade? Maybe…

Five images that summed up Chelsea 3-1 Swansea City

Chelsea continued their march towards the Premier League title with a fine win over spirited and determined Swansea City side at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Cesc Fabregas, Pedro and Diego Costa sealed a 3-1 victory that means the Blues are now a massive eleven points clear of second place. It’s looking increasingly likely that Antonio Conte’s side will have the honours wrapped up sooner rather than later.

Swansea will feel they may have got something from the game having equalised at 1-1 after a Fernando Llorente header found its way past Courtois.

That hope eventually faded with the Blues eventually showing their class to pick up the win.

Here are the FIVE images that tell the story of the match…

Fantastic Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas got the Blues off to a flyer, netting within 20 minutes and sending them on their way to another victory. It was a classy finish and a fantastic way to mark his 300th Premier League appearance.

He’s been a fantastic professional to watch and his spells at Arsenal and Chelsea have ensured he will be remembered by fans across the country for years and years to come.

Llorente leveller

Fernando Llorente seemed determined to impress against Chelsea and did just that when he nodded home on the stroke of half-time from a Gylfi Sigurdsson free-kick. It was an excellent time to score and gave them a big platform to build on in the second half.

It was their only real chance but to Llorente’s credit he took it and raised his profile even further, currently in the midst of an excellent season that could see him win a move to a bigger club.

Any hopes of a Swansea upset were dashed when Pedro fire home a lovely goal to make 2-1. That makes it 10 goals he’s directly contributed to in his last 9 games, 7 goals and 3 assists. It’s remarkable form and you can see why he’s been getting the starting XI nod more often than not in recent weeks.

Killed off by Costa

Diego Costa showed a ruthless edge to really finish the game off, latching on to a lovely Eden Hazard pass to fire past Fabianski between the Swans’ sticks. Coming just six minutes from time, it would ensure there was no late drama and allowed Chelsea fans to relax.

It was Costa’s 17th goal of the season and his 16th in the Premier League. He just can’t stop scoring and must be a contender for the end-of-season Player of the Year awards.

Conte marches on

Antonio Conte’s Chelsea have now won their last 12 matches at home in all competitions and look to be on an unstoppable march to the English Premier League title. It’s still not an easy task but you can’t imagine them blowing the lead they now have, whether Man City win their game in hand on the Blues or not.

The Italian has worked wonders since arriving at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea fans must be wondering how far he can take them. It’s been a Mourinho-level of impact so far and we know how well loved and successful he became to be…

Four players West Ham must target this summer to solve their right-back issue

Don’t talk to West Ham supporters about right-backs. For years now, they have tried to find a long-term option to make the position their own, but time and time again it doesn’t seem to work out.

The likes of Carl Jenkinson, Alvaro Arbeloa and Sam Byram have had a go in recent seasons, but none have cemented their spot in the starting XI.

Instead, Michail Antonio, who’s preferred position is certainly further up the pitch on the wing, has often filled in at right-back this season, putting in some impressive performances.

However, on occasion, he has been found out defensively – which is no surprise – but his absence from the clash against Premier League leaders Chelsea on Monday night would have brought a sense of dread to Irons fans.

Cheikhou Kouyate was the man to deputise at the London Stadium, but he endured a difficult evening against Eden Hazard, and enough is enough for supporters.

Here are FOUR right-backs that could solve the Hammers’ big problem this summer…

Kieran Trippier

When he made the move from Burnley to Tottenham in 2015, Trippier would have had high hopes that he could seriously challenge Kyle Walker for the right-back slot at White Hart Lane.

However, Walker has stepped up his performances under Mauricio Pochettino and is considered by many to be the best in the Premier League in his position right now.

That isn’t ideal for Trippier, though, and the 26-year-old has made just eleven appearances in all competitions for Spurs this season, and he may look for regular first team football elsewhere in the summer.

Almamy Toure

Had it not been for the fine form of Djibril Sidibe, there is no doubt that Toure would have been Monaco’s first choice right-back this season.

However, the impressive 20-year-old has instead had to settle for a bit-part role for the Ligue 1 leaders, though he has still made 18 appearances in all competitions.

He has shown his attacking ability too by providing five assists, and that is a quality that Slaven Bilic will be looking for in a full-back, and the offer of regular first team football could be enough to persuade the youngster to move to the Premier League.

Dominic Iorfa

Following the success that Aaron Cresswell has had since he joined the Irons from Championship outfit Ipswich Town in 2014, West Ham scouts are sure to be keeping a close eye on the potential talent in England’s second tier.

If so, one of the players that will surely have caught their attention is Wolves right-back Iorfa.

Despite being just 21, he is already closing in on his 100th appearance for the west Midlands club.

Being strong and quick, he has all the ingredients to go on and be one of the best full-backs in the country.

Lukas Klostermann

Red Bull Leipzig’s rise to second in the Bundesliga table has been one of the main talking points in European football this season, with a number of young stars helping them challenge for Champions League football.

Klostermann would have been one of them, had he not suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in September that is still keeping him on the sidelines now.

However, the 20-year-old has shown what a good defender he can be and standing at 6ft. 2” tall, he also has the height to win aerial duels too.

Arsenal fans aren’t happy about their summer pre-season plans

Arsenal have announced who they are set to face as part of their pre-season program this summer, and it doesn’t make very good reading for fans of the club.

As confirmed via their official website, the Gunners are set to take on Bayern Munich once again – despite losing to the German giants 10-2 over the course of two games earlier this season.

Indeed, the game is set to be a part of a succession of games played in Asia this year – with a game against Premier League leaders Chelsea already announced.

Whilst the clash will present itself in a different context, given that the Gunners will swap the Champions League for the International Champions Cup, it certainly won’t bring back any positive memories for fans of the club.

It will come as no surprise, then, to learn that supporters have been slamming the decision on Twitter ever since the announcement – with many seemingly preparing for another very one-sided affair…

Player Zone: Jermain Defoe is the perfect player to follow the Owen and Larsson path

In 2007, at the age of 36, Henrik Larsson signed for Manchester United. And in 2009, at the age of 30 – though his career almost seemed over by that point – Michael Owen also spent a fruitful period of time in the twilight of his career at Old Trafford.

Once Owen had left, the baton fell to Javier Hernandez. And so one thing is clear: Sir Alex Ferguson liked a goal poacher on his bench. And when you look around the Premier League’s top six, you see quite a few teams who could be doing with a similar approach.

Although United are praised for philosophies involving youth players coming through the ranks and for playing attacking football, Ferguson clearly had a pragmatic streak. Every year, players seem to be getting younger and younger, with Marcus Rashford and Kylian Mbappe talked up as potential world beaters before they’ve even turned 20, and other players considered to be hitting the middle years of their career by 23. Ferguson may have given youth a chance during his time, but he certainly knew the value of experience, too.

That’s the problem facing almost every manager in the top six this season. The brief for all of these super-managers who have come to England with the promise of big salaries and spending money is not just to build a winning team, but to build a winning dynasty.

At Manchester City, Pep Guardiola has been brought in as a sort of constitutional expert to give the club an identity and a way of playing. Mauld a winning team, but to build a winning dynasty.

At Manchester City, Pep Guardiola has been brought in as a sort of constitutional expert to give the club an identity and a way of playing. Mauricio Pochettino is building a squad of young talent, and Jurgen Klopp is doing a similar thing. The point is to keep the nucleus of a team together who can compete for trophies in the long term.

But when you look back at the impact that players like Larsson, Owen, and even Hernandez had at United, they were impact subs off the bench. And it didn’t matter how old they were – Owen and Larsson old, Hernandez young – what mattered was their ability to read the game whilst sitting on the bench so that they could find the right spaces in the box when they came on. Larsson may only have scored one Premier League goal for United, but he played enough games that season to get himself a medal. He was part of a squad.

In a world of instant results and earth shattering pressure placed on managers and players alike, the idea of a squad player is often lost. While it’s only natural that football players want to play first team games, both for their career prospects and for their own enjoyment, we seem to have lost the type of player who is happy to be involved when the team needs, safe in the knowledge that he’s a valuable member of a winning squad. Perhaps that’s the legacy of foreign imports and a lack of homegrown players from the same city, but players see playing as a career, not a vocation.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but isn’t that exactly the sort of plan B that both Liverpool and Tottenham could be doing with this season, especially when it comes to their striking options?

And with Jermain Defoe’s form over the last couple of seasons earning him an England call-up once again, and his goal at Wembley this weekend, you start to wonder why he’s not talked about in the same bracket as the off-the-bench poachers we’ve spoken about before.

It’s not his physical prowess that allows Defoe to score goals, it’s his cleverness and his experience. It’s how he reads the game and gets into the right positions as much as his natural finishing ability that makes him so deadly. And with his age and presumably low price tag (at least lower than you’re likely to spend on most 15-goal per season strikers) you’d think it would make perfect sense.

Maybe the stumbling block isn’t with the big clubs but with Defoe himself. Maybe he just wants to end his career as a first choice striker, though wherever he goes at this point, you get the feeling most fans would rather have a younger model. But having a player like Defoe come off the bench 15 times a season and bag seven goals could be the difference between second and sixth. And in a top six that’s as congested as it’s ever been in the Premier League era, it could well win you the title.

And if former club Tottenham, Liverpool or even Manchester United can’t offer Defoe first team football, they might still be able to offer him something he hasn’t managed to get his hands on very much in his career: medals. He only has one League Cup winner’s medal from his time in north London, but with each of the top six looking to win much more than that over the coming seasons, maybe Defoe could be persuaded to swap starting berths for squad roles, and exchange goals for medals.

Newcastle United fans want Defoe, despite Sunderland link

Newcastle United supporters are keen on the idea of signing Jermain Defoe this summer, despite the striker currently playing for their arch rivals Sunderland.

According to The Sun, Magpies boss Rafael Benitez is considering a move for the England international, who is expected to be in demand this summer.

Defoe, who will turn 35 in October, has scored 14 goals in 30 league appearances for Sunderland.

After recently returning to the international fold following a three-year exile, it is fair to say that the striker may look to join a Premier League club if the Black Cats suffer relegation to the Championship.

As it stands, they look likely to do so as the club are rooted to the bottom of the table, 10 points from safety with eight games left to play.

Sunderland could be swapping placed with Newcastle, who are on the verge of sealing automatic promotion back to the top flight, just one season after getting relegated.

Following the transfer rumours, fans of the Magpies have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on a possible deal.

Scholes backs Man United youngster to become elite forward

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has claimed that Marcus Rashford has the ability to become a world-class player in the mould of Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rashford reached double figures for the season on Thursday night when he netted Man United’s winner in their Europa League quarter-final second leg against Anderlecht.

The 19-year-old, who burst onto the scene last season, has become a feature of Jose Mourinho’s lineup in recent months, and the England international has been tipped to become one of the stars of the world game by a former Man United legend.

Scholes told BBC Radio 5 live:

“He has always been a centre forward. When I saw him playing for the young United teams, he was scoring 30-40 goals a season.

“I know this lad can finish and score goals. I am just a little bit worried that he is so quick he may get shoved out wide, which is not a bad thing.

“You look at Cristiano Ronaldo’s record and players like Neymar, he has that kind of ability. It is a lot to live up to but he has that in him. He can be a world star.”

Rashford has only netted five times in 26 Premier League appearances for Man United this season, although the teenager has mainly been forced to operate in a wide position.

However, a serious injury to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, which is expected to end the Swede’s season, should see Rashford promoted to the centre-forward position for the remainder of the 2016-17 campaign.

Three reasons Newcastle can prove their ambition by signing Tom Heaton

According to reports in The Sun, Newcastle United are ready to battle Crystal Palace in the race to sign Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton this summer.

The Clarets need just a point to reach the magic 40-point mark that should seal their Premier League survival in what has been an outstanding season, and one of their standout players has been the man between the sticks – Heaton.

The England international has performed admirably and pulled off a string of fine saves throughout the campaign to make sure Sean Dyche’s men have stayed away from the relegation zone, and those showings have attracted interest from their top flight rivals.

Magpies manager Rafa Benitez is keen to significantly strengthen his squad this summer following their instant promotion back to the Premier League, and he is obviously keen to bring in a new number one.

Here are three reasons Newcastle can show their ambition with the addition of Heaton…

He is a proven Premier League star

During his two seasons in the Premier League – and especially this term – the stopper has proven that he is, arguably, one of the best goalkeepers in the division.

Time after time throughout the current campaign he has pulled off a string of brilliant saves to help his side to pick up points, and that leadership and quality between the sticks could be vital in helping Newcastle to be a lot more than just relegation contenders next season.

He will increase their points tally

While the likes of Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot have done well during Newcastle United’s promotion-winning campaign, Benitez may want a more experienced man between the sticks in the top flight.

He will have watched the England international closely on a number of occasions this season and he would have been especially impressed as the 31-year-old made save after save to keep Manchester United at bay in Burnley’s goalless draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford earlier in the season, which saw the Clarets pick up a crucial point.

He could cost £15m

Magpies manager Rafa Benitez is said to be demanding a significant transfer kitty from owner Mike Ashley to allow him to bring in the players he wants this summer, and ensure that the club aren’t battling relegation next season.

With three years left on his Burnley contract, it is thought that Heaton could cost around £15m if Newcastle want to sign him this summer and spending that on a new goalkeeper would certainly show Benitez that the club is committed to doing more than just surviving.

Do you agree, Magpies fans? Let us know below.

Revealed: 67% of Man United fans wouldn’t back Sessegnon bid

Fulham wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon looks set to be one of the Football League’s most in-demand stars during the summer transfer window.

The Cottagers prodigy is just 16 years of age but has already established himself in the Fulham first team, making 25 Championship appearances this term to produce five goals and three assists in the second tier.

He’s also already scored against a top flight club in the form of FA Cup opponents Hull City, so perhaps it’s no surprise there’s a host of Premier League clubs queuing up for his services according to Mirror Football – namely Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United.

The most recent reports claim United are hoping to jump ahead of the pack to sign the teenager, so we asked Red Devils supporters earlier this week whether they’d back a summer transfer swoop for Sessegnon.

But according to the results of our exclusive poll, a whopping 67% would be against such a deal. Left-back has emerged as a real problem position for United this season and one that Sessegnon would surely be able to fill long-term. But at such a tender age, perhaps Red Devils fans think a move to Old Trafford this summer would be a little too soon.
