Liverpool fans are losing it over latest transfer update

Liverpool fans are loving the latest transfer update from the ever-reliable Chris Bascombe, who says Jürgen Klopp wants to sign both a goalkeeper and a number ten this summer.

According to Bascombe’s report in the Telegraph, Klopp “would like to add a number 10 and goalkeeper before the start of the season.”

The Reds looked to have a swoop for Nabil Fekir wrapped up before the World Cup, but the deal collapsed at the final hour.

Fans are desperate for a direct replacement for Philippe Coutinho, who became Klopp’s playmaker from midfield in his final season at Anfield.

With Naby Keita and Fabinho already set to star in the Reds’ midfield, there is a real feeling that a creative number ten would be the cherry on the cake needed to lead a proper title charge.

On the goalkeeper front, the Reds have been linked to just about every goalkeeper under the sun this summer, after Loris Karius’ horrible blunders in the Champions League final.

The defence improved drastically when Virgil van Dijk arrived at Anfield last season, so adding a top goalkeeper this summer would give the Reds a real chance at competing for trophies.

Revealed: Majority of Arsenal fans think Hernandez could replace Monreal

Arsenal have been busy in the transfer window so far this summer, recruiting five new signings.

Manager Unai Emery is attempting to shape a squad ready for the 2018-19 season as he embarks on his first campaign in charge of the Gunners.

Right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner was the first to come through the door, and he was followed by goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Since then, defender Sokratis, midfielder Lucas Torreira and youngster Matteo Guendouzi have all signed up to be part of Emery’s revolution.

A recent report in Goal claimed that the manager’s current priority is landing a winger, but will look to sign a left-back of Nacho Monreal leaves to join Real Sociedad.

Earlier this month, Marca reported that Real Madrid would be open to selling Theo Hernandez, who joined the club from Atletico Madrid last year but has had very little game time.

The Spanish publication suggested that Real would want a buy-back clause, and it seems that Arsenal fans are keen for their club to make an approach.

Sturridge expected to stay at Anfield this season, Liverpool fans react

Daniel Sturridge was crucial for then-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers in the 2013-14 season as the club came two points within winning the Premier League title.

The striker formed an attacking trio with Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling, both of whom have moved on to other clubs.

Fast-forward four seasons and Sturridge now finds himself low down in the pecking order, so much so that he was sent on loan to West Bromwich Albion for the second half of the 2017-18 campaign.

It was widely suggested that the forward would be sold this summer due to the likely lack of game time that he is facing at Anfield.

However, with only a matter of weeks left until the new season begins, it seems that the tide has turned.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”273048″ player=”12034″ title=”Has Klopp just cranked up the pressure on himself”]

According to the Liverpool Echo, manager Jurgen Klopp has been impressed with the 28-year-old in pre-season and is willing to keep him for the remainder of his contract, which expires next summer.

Injuries have played a major part in Sturridge’s decline, but when the campaign kicks off, he will be hoping to add to his haul of 75 Premier League goals.

Judging by the reaction on Reddit, the majority of Liverpool fans are hopeful of the same thing.

Hijack: Burnley should fight for Gonalons this summer

According to the Evening Standard, Everton and Crystal Palace are set to battle it out for the signing of Roma’s Maxime Gonalons this summer.

Gonalons only joined the Italian giants last summer, but the high level of Roma’s midfield options often meant that, in the competition for places, Gonalons lost out.

With the 29-year-old seemingly surplus to requirements at the Serie A club, a battle has commenced between the Premier League sides eager to land his signature during this transfer window.

Before anyone else can make the Frenchman their own though, Burnley should consider making a move for the midfielder.

The Breakdown

With Burnley facing a season with Europa League fixtures to contend with, on top of their Premier League commitments, Sean Dyche will be keen to add depth to his ranks. The senior squad at Turf Moor currently consists of only 25 players.

The addition of Gonalons will add extra depth to Dyche’s midfield contingent, and will also bring further quality, and experience of European football, to the middle of the park.

Gonalons is a player who would fit neatly into this Burnley outfit. The Roma man is technically excellent and reliably tidy in possession. He would also provide an extra layer of protection in front of the defence at Turf Moor.

The France international would fit in well alongside the likes of Jack Cork, Jeff Hendrick and Steven Defour, and would help to ensure that the Clarets have enough in their squad to contend with the gruelling season to come.

Transfermarkt value Gonalons at £6.75 million, but Burnley will have to act fast, and beat off their Premier League rivals, if they’re to land their man.

Everton fans reveal their delight at Mirallas news

Kevin Mirallas is on the verge of leaving Everton to join Fiorentina, according to Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio.

Mirallas has been with Everton since 2012, and impressed during his first three seasons with the club – scoring 28 times.

The attacker’s form dipped during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, however, and he struggled for football in the first half of last term before joining former club Olympiacos on loan.

Mirallas scored twice in the second half of last season, but the 6ft ace did not finish his loan spell at the Greek outfit due to a number of below-par performances.

The Belgian has been deemed surplus to requirements by new Everton boss Marco Silva this summer, and he is believed to be on the verge of completing a move to Fiorentina.

The Everton fans have been offering their views on the 30-year-old’s future, and it would be fair to say that they are looking forward to seeing the back of him.

Arter would be Newcastle United’s most underwhelming signing

Newcastle United are considering making a move for Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter, according to The Sun.

What’s the word?

There is not much time for the Magpies to finalise their transfer activity in what has been another frustrating window for the club.

It appears that manager Rafael Benitez wants to bring in a new midfielder before the window closes.

The Sun reports that Arter – valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt – is on the club’s radar, but Cardiff City, Middlesbrough and Stoke City are also interested in the Englishman.

The publication claims that the Cherries want around £10m for their long-standing midfielder, who managed just 13 Premier League appearances last season.

Why should Newcastle avoid this move?

Firstly, it has been made clear that the North-East outfit does not have much cash to work with in the transfer market.

If Bournemouth are demanding £10m, then perhaps Benitez should think that the level of cash could be better spent elsewhere.

The middle of the park is not an area that needs significant strengthening at Newcastle.

Also, no disrespect to Arter or the Cherries, but if Eddie Howe does not see a place for him in his team, then the midfielder would likely be a fringe player at St James’ Park.

Celtic should move for Choupo-Moting

According to The Telegraph, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is amongst the group of players that have been informed by Gary Rowett that they are free to leave the club this summer.

What’s the story?

Following the Potters’ relegation from the Premier League last time out, it has been a summer of change at the club.

New manager Rowett has come in and immediately made his mark on the playing squad. The arrivals of James McClean, Tom Ince, Sam Clucas, Oghenekaro Etebo and Ashley Williams, amongst others, show that the club are serious about making a swift return to the top flight.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”256213″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Celtic’s first six fixtures for the 201819 Scottish Premiership season”]

So many new faces looks to have pushed some of the old guard out of contention though, with Choupo-Moting, Charlie Adam, Giannelli Imbula and Geoff Cameron all reportedly having been told that they are surplus to requirements.

Whilst the English transfer window has closed, foreign sides may still purchase players from English clubs whilst windows abroad remain open.

Celtic ought to be amongst the clubs poised to take advantage of their extended buying period and readying themselves to swoop for the unwanted Choupo-Moting, rated at £7.2m by Transfermarkt.

Added firepower

Perhaps Brendan Rodgers has taken Celtic as far as he can.  Consecutive domestic trebles in both of his seasons in charge of the Scottish giants leaves European progress as the only unconquered bastion.

Despite leading the Bhoys into the Champions League group stage for the first time in three years in 2016, the 7-0 humiliation suffered at the hands of Barcelona served to show how far away from being able to compete at Europe’s top table they are.

If Rodgers is to kick on, he has to add extra depth and firepower to his squad. Scott Sinclair, after a blistering debut campaign, failed to scale the same heights last time out. Equally, Moussa Dembele struggled for form and consistency up front last season.

The arrival of Choupo-Moting would represent an injection of versatility, experience and quality to Celtic’s attacking contingent and should create healthy competition for places across the front line.

The Cameroon international is valued at £7.2 million by Transfermarkt, but would likely be available for a knocked down fee. Celtic should jump at this chance to sign a quality forward for a bargain price.

Three players that Arsenal still need to offload this summer

The English transfer window may have closed, but Premier League and Football League clubs may still sell or loan their players to foreign sides whilst windows remain open abroad.

This shall allow clubs on these shores to trim the fat from their squads for a little while longer. However, it leaves English outfits susceptible to losing players they can no longer replace.

Arsenal are one of the many clubs who will be hoping to avoid that latter, unfortunate fate. Though, the Gunners must still remain active in the market in order to take advantage of the extended selling period.

The squad at the Emirates is bloated, and despite the likes of Lucas Perez, Chuba Akpom and Jack Wilshere already having sought pastures new, others remain for Unai Emery to move towards an exit from the North London club.

The time has come for Emiliano Martinez to leave Arsenal. The Argentine ‘keeper arrived at the club as a teenager and will have long dreamed of making himself the No. 1 at the Emirates.

Now though, even with David Ospina out of the way, he is only third in the pecking order, behind the veteran Petr Cech and the new arrival Bernd Leno.

At this stage of his career, Martinez needs to be getting regular football. One of the club’s talented young shot-stoppers, such as Dejan Iliev, can take Martinez’s place in the senior squad.

The 25-year-old has been on many loan spells in recent seasons but must now seek a permanent switch for the good of his career.

It is finally time to bring a close to Carl Jenkinson’s Arsenal career. The 26-year-old was a boyhood fan of the club, and during a period of good form he even managed a single England cap back in 2012.

However, it has been clear for a while that the right-back is short of the quality required to make it with the Gunners. A series of loan stints, most recently in the Championship with Birmingham City, have been delaying the inevitable.

At this stage of his career, Jenkinson needs to be playing regular football. Sadly, that will never be the case with his beloved Gunners. He is also likely to need to take a wage cut in order to find a permanent new home.

Whilst Danny Welbeck could prove to be a useful squad option for Emery to keep around, with the England international now in the final year of his contract with the Gunners, it makes more sense for the club to cash in whilst they still can.

The 27-year-old is never going to usurp Aubameyang or Lacazette as the first choice strikers. His exit could also make room for some of the clubs talented young prospects, such as Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson, to shine.

Loan deal for Fernando Llorente would have been better than Lafferty deal

Following weeks of intense speculation, Kyle Lafferty finally completed a switch from Hearts to Rangers earlier today to begin his second spell with the club.

Lafferty arrives as Steven Gerrard’s 12th signing since taking charge at the club in what has been a whirlwind summer for the new manager. Umar Sadiq’s arrival and Alfredo Morelos’ form at the spearhead of the attack will presumably force Lafferty to embrace his versatility and become something of a utility player in attack.

With the ability to play on both wings and through the middle, there’s no doubt that Rangers have completed a shrewd signing by bringing a player with a proven track record in the SPFL to Ibrox.

However, a recent report from the London Evening Standard suggests that they may have missed an ideal opportunity to sign a player of true quality, namely Fernando Llorente.

According to the report, Spurs ‘will listen to offers’ for the Spaniard this summer after he endured a relatively poor first season with the club.

Llorente is a natural goalscorer with a proven track record in Europe, but Harry Kane’s presence in the first-team has turned him into nothing more than a backup player.

At this moment in time the 33-year-old is likely to be prioritising first-team opportunities above all other considerations, and at Rangers he could have easily established himself as a first-team regular.

Whilst there’s no doubt that the signing of Lafferty is a smart move from the club, the signing of a player of Llorente’s prestige and natural goal-scoring talent would have been the coup the club needed to truly challenge Celtic this season.

Tottenham will presumably be inclined to sell Llorente this summer on a permanent deal, but their willingness to listen to offers suggests Rangers could have tempted them with a season-long loan offer.

In short, Llorente’s availability suggests Rangers have missed a trick in the transfer market which would have added a significant layer of quality to their attack and simultaneously sent out a huge statement to the rest of the SPFL.

Newcastle fans love Benitez’s comments on managing a "top club"

Newcastle fans are absolutely loving Rafael Benitez’s latest comment, as the Spaniard hit back at Jamie Carragher’s Monday Night Football comments.

You’d be hard pushed to find a manager with a better connection with the fans at his club than Benitez, and that connection has just got a whole lot better.

The former Liverpool boss has had a tough time this summer, working on a shoestring budget to improve his Magpies’ squad, and the Monday Night Football team wondered why he wasn’t in the running for other vacancies.

Carragher asked: “Why wasn’t he (Benitez) actually in the running or interviewed for the Arsenal job with his great experience of the Premier League?”

“It may be along the lines of where the game’s going and how it’s perceived,” the Liverpool legend continued, referring to the Magpies’ deep defending against Chelsea.

In short, Carragher and co-pundit Garry Neville suspected Benitez had been overlooked for “top jobs” due to his style, but Benitez had the perfect response when asked if he was already in a top job.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”285457″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Theatre Of Screams & The Serb As Good As Salah”]

“100 per cent. They talk about other managers and if they do this or they do that. I think the fans appreciated that when we (Benitez and his coaching staff) decided to stay in the Championship we took a massive risk,” the manager said.

“We did that because we could see the fans, the stadium, the city, the potential and everything about it.

“After a year in the Championship it was even more clear that the potential was there. That’s the reason why we said carry on.”

Benitez reaches the end of his contract next summer, and Mike Ashley is going to have to free up some transfer funds to make him extend that deal, but fans are loving these comments in the mean time.
