Liverpool fans react as club willing to sell Harry Wilson after Curtis Jones’ emergence

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after Football Insider revealed that the club are willing to offload Harry Wilson, following the emergence of Curtis Jones this season.

Wilson spent last term on loan at Derby under Frank Lampard, scoring an impressive 16 goals while also recording four assists – he has continued his fine form with a respectable seven Premier League goals for Bournemouth in the current campaign.

However, Football Insider believe that the Merseysiders – who value their academy graduate at £30m – think highly of the Wales international, but do not feel like he will be in contention for a first-team spot next season.

The news comes after Jones – a 19-year-old academy graduate – has scored twice in his three starts this season, all of which have come in the domestic cup competitions.

Jones has also played 19 minutes of Premier League football, and his long-range curler against Everton will surely be amongst the club’s Goal of the Season contenders at the end of the campaign.

Let’s see what the Liverpool fans on Twitter have been saying about the news…

To kick off the reaction, these three supporters all mentioned the club’s Sporting Director Michael Edwards in their tweets.

Ghalib said that there is “another masterclass from Edwards incoming” – paying reference to the key figure’s ability to extract impressive fees for background players at Anfield, such as £19m for Dominic Solanke, £27m for Christian Benteke and £15m for Jordon Ibe.

Also, Jay said that if Edwards can get £30m for Wilson – a player with only one first-team appearance for the club – then he “needs a mad bonus”.

Elsewhere, another supporter said that this move would be a “big mistake” while another fan commented in contrasting fashion.

They said that people calling this a “big mistake” clearly haven’t watched Wilson play on a regular basis, before saying that the 22-year-old is “not a big prospect at all” and that he’s only good at limited parts of the game – ouch.

Lastly, another fan echoed that point.

@K_LFC8 said that Football Insider’s report was “good” as Wilson clearly isn’t good enough for us – they also added that the Welshman is “nothing more than a dead ball specialist” in harsh fashion.

What could’ve been… Can you name the clubs these football legends almost joined?

West Brom have missed an opportunity to sign the next Luka Modric

According to the Express & Star, West Brom boss Slaven Bilic decided against signing one of his loan targets on deadline day as a move collapsed over a potential departure.

What’s the word?

It is claimed that Chris Brunt looked set to join Stoke City but a switch to Staffordshire fell through as the Potters were unable to offload centre-back Bruno Martins Indi.

Had the Baggies’ long-serving skipper been allowed to leave, then Bilic would have looked to sign Watford midfielder Domingos Quina on loan as a replacement.

But as a result, the late turn of events stopped him from doing so. He told the media:

“Quina was an option but only if one of our players was leaving. There was a possibility that one of our players would go and one more. And for one I said okay, and the other I said no, no way.

“Then maybe we would have got Domingos. But because that transfer did not happen it would not be fair to player to bring him in but for him not to be involved as much as he deserves to be.”

Slaven Bilic, West Brom head coach.

Opportunity missed

This may have been a mistake from Bilic as he should have probably looked to sign the 20-year-old starlet anyway.

Albion’s engine room hasn’t been at its best in recent weeks with Romaine Sawyers putting up just one rating above 6.8 since the start of December. They have even had to deal with the absence of Matheus Pereira in the number ten role following his three-game suspension.

A player like Quina would have been the perfect solution and a completely viable option in his own right for the rest of the season – he would certainly offer the team something more than Brunt, who has played just 37 minutes in the Championship all season – even 38-year-old Gareth Barry has managed over double that.

The Watford youngster is a man Bilic knows well from his time at West Ham, where he was also likened to a star that has made the World Cup final and even won multiple Champions League titles.

“The West Ham coaches think I’m more like a Luka Modric-style of player, I can play eight or 10. I’ve also played as a No 6 for the U23s.”

Domingos Quina, Watford midfielder.

As he explains himself, he’s also able to play anywhere centrally which would have only opened up the playbook even more as he could fill in for any of their underperforming stars or deputise if any get suspended or injured.

Call yourself a Championship expert? Name all the top-scorers from each of these Championship seasons…

Quina has played 12 times in the Premier League but has only managed four substitute appearances this campaign, per Transfermarkt. He probably could have done with this loan switch just as much as the Baggies could have done with him in their promotion run-in.

Richard Sutcliffe has made a big claim about Dean Henderson’s future

Richard Sutcliffe has made a claim about where Dean Henderson will be next season, during a Q&A on The Athletic.

What did he say?

Henderson has been a key player for the Blades this season, playing 24 Premier League games, keeping a total of eight clean sheets.

This continues his work from last season, making 46 Championship appearances to help gain promotion, keeping an impressive total of 21 clean sheets.

While there is plenty of excitement about his role in getting Sheffield United to their current place of fifth in the Premier League table, thoughts have strayed to what will happen next season.

Sutcliffe has made a big claim about the goalkeeper’s future when asked during the Q&A: “No option to buy, Ben. Will return to Old Trafford at the end of the season. Decision as to what happens next probably belongs to Henderson. Does he stay and challenge for the number 1 shirt at Manchester United? Or does he think his career be best served by going out again for another year on loan in the Premier League?

“My hunch is he will stay at OT and challenge De Gea, believing he can be first choice. Blades will realise this and have one eye on next summer and a new first choice keeper. Chris Wilder got a bit frustrated last summer when waiting for the Henderson deal to go through – even then suggesting he had a back-up signing lined up in case the deal didn’t happen.”

A decision to make

There is certainly a decision for Henderson to make when the season comes to its culmination, as if he is going to usurp De Gea, then this is arguably the best time to do it.

The Spaniard has made some big errors and looked suspect from balls into the box at times, as was the case with his weak attempt at a punch against Everton.

For away day veterans only: Can you name all of these defunct stadiums?

However, having had such regular game time, the 22-year-old will likely be wary of having a season of watching on from the sidelines, so with the Blades progressing so well in the top tier this campaign, there could be a temptation to stay put.

Though, as Sutcliffe has suggested is already the case, it is vital that Chris Wilder has other targets in mind for the eventuality that he does go back to Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, what a Blades key figure said to Sander Berge on his first day has been revealed.

Liverpool’s Nathaniel Clyne is back in training

After missing the whole of the season to date, Nathaniel Clyne is back in training with Liverpool.

What’s the story?

The 28-year-old has been desperately unlucky with injuries so far at Anfield. During the 2017/18 season, he missed 44 games due to a back issue, and last summer he ruptured his cruciate ligament which has kept him out of the action for the entirety of this season.

Now, though, the former Southampton man is back in training, meaning that he could play his part before now and the end of the season.

Treble boost

The Reds have the Premier League almost sewn up. They now have a 25-point lead at the top of the table, and need just five wins from their remaining 12 matches to be crowned champions. It has been a fantastic season already for Jurgen Klopp and co.

However, this has the potential to be a monumental one, as they are still in the FA Cup and the Champions League. Although there is little competition for the Premier League title, they are still on course for an unbeaten campaign, which is a carrot in itself.

As such, there are still plenty of important games left this term, and having reliable back-up options is paramount to success. Neco Williams may be a promising youngster, but he is just 18 years of age. Clyne, meanwhile, has 14 caps for England and 185 Premier League appearances under his belt. He is a player with years of experience, and will be able to handle the pressure situations deep into the knockout stages of cup competitions.

The Reds, of course, were within a point of the title last term, winning 30 out of 38 matches. They were almost flawless, yet their failure to lift the trophy can be pinpointed to a spell in January and February, when they drew three in four matches.

During that time, they were without Trent Alexander-Arnold, their first choice right-back, meaning that James Milner and Jordan Henderson had to fill in. Both natural midfielders, they were unable to offer the same threat as the 21-year-old, who had 12 assists in the Premier League last term.

But Liverpool had no real alternative to Alexander-Arnold – mainly due to the fact that Clyne had been allowed to leave on loan to Bournemouth.

As such, a quality back-up could be the difference as the Merseyside club chase the treble. He should be welcomed back with open arms.

Liverpool should beat Man Utd to Jude Bellingham signing

As Liverpool canter away to lifting the Premier League title this season, spare a thought for those pained Manchester United fans who are having to watch their arch-rivals open up a staggering 38-point lead on them, whilst they scrap for a measly Champions League spot.

The tides have well and truly turned since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013, with United failing to win the league title, and the Reds arriving this season on the back of being European champions once more.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are the ones now looking to play catch-up, and it’s a position Jurgen Klopp must be ruthless from. Whilst of course there is very little he can do to stop the Red Devils from doing their own thing, he can however have a major say when it comes to important matters like transfers.

And that is why Liverpool must surely consider beating their bitter rivals to the signing of Birmingham prodigy, Jude Bellingham. According to The Daily Star, Klopp’s side have entered the race to sign the 16-year-old – a player who United looked to bring in during the January transfer window.

The report adds that United appeared to be Bellingham’s most likely destination, but Liverpool’s arrival on the scene “now poses a serious threat to their bitter rivals’ ambitions”.

This is a starlet of course compared to a “young Steven Gerrard” by former Red, Jermaine Pennant, and is quite evidently on a rise to the top. He has already made 33 appearances for Birmingham this season, chipping in with four goals and three assists.

“He’s a fantastic player. He reminds me of a young Steven Gerrard. He throws himself about, he can get up and down the pitch, he can score goals and assist goals, he’s got trickery. The Championship is a very, very strong, demanding and physical league, and he’s throwing his body about; he’s strong and he’s only going to get stronger.” Pennant on Bellingham

And having signed the likes of Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg, it’s clear Liverpool are very much intent on signing some promising starlets with an eye to the future.

For away day veterans only: Can you name all of these defunct stadiums?

But clinching the signature of Bellingham wouldn’t simply be just adding yet another precocious talent to their ranks. Instead, it would also be a case of rubbing salt into the wounds of their bitter rivals, who are already perhaps suffering at the sight of seeing their fellow English giants return to the summit of domestic football.

The Reds can press home their recent advantage over their rivals, and inflict yet more misery by beating them to a target who has been on their radar for some months now. A late swoop for Bellingham would be more evidence that the Premier League is well and truly Liverpool’s yard now.

Meanwhile, this Liverpool man must impress following Jurgen Klopp’s confirmation of player’s setback.

James McNicholas gives his Pablo Mari verdict

James McNicholas gave his verdict on Pablo Mari’s Premier League debut, during a Q&A on The Athletic.

What did he say?

The Brazilian played the entire 90 minutes at the Emirates on Saturday, helping Arsenal keep a clean sheet in their 1-0 win against West Ham United.

He had already played in the FA Cup, but this was his first taste of league action since making the move to London, which also meant that people had an opportunity to judge how he performed.

McNicholas did just that, as when asked about how the 26-year-old fared, he replied: “Good on the ball, but looked a little stretched by Antonio and Haller’s physicality.”

Positive signs

It can be suggested that Mikel Arteta’s side were very lucky to come out of the game with a win and clean sheet, as Antonio and Haller had clear chances that they should have done a lot better with.

However, when reviewing Mari’s individual performance at the heart of their defensive, positive signs can definitely be taken from this game.

The Brazilian was successful with the only tackle that he attempted during the match, while he also completed eight clearances, which was the most of any player on the pitch.

Can you get full marks on the Ultimate Arsenal Quiz? Test your knowledge below…

He won three of the six aerial duels that he competed in. This does potentially play into McNicholas’ point of the centre-back struggling with the West Ham strikers’ physicality, as Haller won eight aerial duels, while Antonio came out on top in four.

The Athletic journalist was also correct about his ability on the ball, as Mari showed plenty of precision, completing 85% of the 82 passes that he attempted during the game.

Therefore, while this is far from conclusive about how he will do at Arsenal, there are certainly positives to be taken from the Brazilian’s performance on his league debut.

Meanwhile, fans have been slating one Arsenal man after the win.

How Everton repeat their Townsend masterclass

When Everton made a move to sign Andros Townsend on a free transfer this summer, supporters would have been concerned.

It was hardly an ambitious signing, nor was it really an acquisition that added much quality to the first-team picture.

Townsend had only scored twice in the last two Premier League campaigns as his form and performances started to dwindle.

However, he has defied critics in the most encapsulating of ways.

The winger has been nothing short of sublime since signing for the Merseyside outfit. His displays have captured the imagination and he is immediately a fan favourite.

The 30-year-old’s professionalism, work rate and desire have been first-class while his technical attributes have also shone through.

Townsend has found the net on four occasions and also added three assists to his collection in all competitions.

Although he wasn’t an eye-catching addition to the Finch Farm ranks, he has hit back at his doubters and proven that sometimes, signing experienced individuals is a good idea.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Rafa Benitez used the same tactic when it comes to the January transfer window.

Everton have been linked with another 30-year-old in Aaron Ramsey, and if they can prise the £12.6m-rated midfielder away from Juventus, Marcel Brands would create a similar sort of masterclass.

After all, Juve are willing to let him depart on a free transfer and at his age, he is now starting to tail off in terms of performance.

That said, Ramsey still very much has something to offer at the top level of the game. The central midfielder is an archetypal box to box player, tracking back with tireless work ethic and surging forward to score important goals.

Like Townsend, he has endured a few poor years in terms of consistency but Benitez has already proven he can revive players who are out of sorts.

Crucially, the Welshman already knows the Premier League inside out. He’s appeared in the top-flight of English football on 262 occasions, scoring 40 goals and claiming 51 assists.

With those numbers in mind, it’s hardly a surprise to hear Martin Keown describe him as an “outstanding technician.”

After James Rodriguez’s departure from Everton, they arguably lack someone with the ability to arrive late and pop up from midfield with goals.

Therefore, Ramsey would change the dynamic, while also replicating the type of move the Toffees sealed with Townsend a few months ago.

Everton: George Costigan reveals ‘the most pleasing thing’ about Everton’s display vs Man United

George Costigan joined the Talking The Blues podcast just recently and talked about a big improvement he noticed in Everton’s game against Manchester United on Sunday.

Even though Carlo Ancelotti’s men couldn’t push for the win and had to settle for a draw against the Red Devils at Goodison Park with a 1-1 finish, Costigan believes there was one clear improvement.

The team didn’t switch off in the latter stages of the clash but they actually remained focused until the final whistle arrived from the referee.

Here’s what he said on the Talking The Blues podcast (3/3/2020): “But the most pleasing thing was that we kept going for the full 90+ minutes. We didn’t just play to 90 minutes and then hope to get through whatever minutes added. We actually played the whole game. And we haven’t seen that for a long, long time.”

Not only did the Toffees play the whole game fully focused on their opposition but it also felt like they grew into it as time went on. This is also quite evident in the stats as well.

According to SofaScore, Everton had less of the ball and fewer shots in the first half but then completely turned the tides on Manchester United, leading in both categories in the final 45 minutes of the game.

And Costigan was just happy to see them keep up the pressure and sustain that even in the final moments of the clash, which is a visible improvement on its own.

Everton fans, do you agree with Costigan’s verdict? Do you think Ancelotti should be given credit? Let us know down in the comments below!

Man United fans don’t want Samuel Umtiti

Manchester United are set to make a move for Barcelona centre-back Samuel Umtiti during the summer transfer window, as reported by Spanish outlet Sport.

Watch Manchester United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

The Catalan giants want rid of the World Cup winner, and it is the Red Devils who are set to make a “significant effort” to sign him.

However, their fans are far from impressed with this transfer link, as they made clear on Twitter.

One fan claimed that they would rather sign Nathan Ake, while others have outright said they don’t want Umtiti, whether there is an alternative or not.

A point of reference is his injury record, which is certainly a concern, as the 26-year-old has missed 38 matches since the beginning of last season with three knee issues and a foot problem.

Separating the fairweathers from real fans: How much can you remember about United’s treble season?

His statistics when on the pitch this term don’t offer much more encouragement, as he averages 0.8 tackles per La Liga game, but commits 1.5 fouls and is dribbled past 0.3 times.

Some fans have suggested that United would be better off bringing Chris Smalling back into the fold, rather than spending money on the Frenchman.

Smalling has caught the eye while out on loan at AS Roma, starting 26 matches across Serie A and the Europa league, averaging 1 tackle, 2 interceptions, 4.5 clearances and 1.1 blocks per game domestically.

Whether United call upon the loanee or go for another option, the bottom line from fans is that they do not want Umtiti at their club.

Meanwhile, FFC writers have given their verdicts on another potential United signing.

James Pearce tips Liverpool’s Minamino for big role in 2020/21

Liverpool fans haven’t nearly seen enough of January arrival Takumi Minamino this season, but The Athletic’s James Pearce believes the forward could be in line for an increased role next season.

What’s been said

The Merseyside outfit are on the verge of clinching their first-ever Premier League title, although they’ll have to wait a little longer with English football currently suspended.

It’s all they have left to play for having been knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid as defending champions earlier this month.

And with a lack of action on the pitch, The Athletic ran a Reds-based Q&A asking fans for their thoughts on the best and worst signings the club have ever had.

One suggestion was Minamino, but Pearce was quick to play down such a suggestion, he said:

Long-term focus

The 25-year-old has been restricted to just seven appearances since swapping Austria for Anfield in a £7.25m with only three of those being starts, per Transfermarkt.

But is that really any surprise when the front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah are ahead of you in the pecking order?

The trio netted 69 goals and also provided a combined total of 25 assists between them last season, and that has certainly continued into this campaign resulting in transfer speculation linking them with moves elsewhere.

Watch Liverpool Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Mane’s 18 goals and 12 assists from 38 matches, via Transfermarkt, has resulted in Real Madrid courting his services while Bayern Munich are said to be lining up a possible £75m bid for Firmino this summer.

Los Galacticos are also keen on Salah, too, according to Spanish reports.

It remains to be seen if anyone will depart Liverpool anytime soon, but it will bear fruit for Minamino should it indeed happen.

Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

The Japan international has been lauded as a ‘perfect fit’ for Klopp’s side in the past, but there’s going to be some patience before he’s utilised more, though if Pearce is correct, then those at Anfield will see a lot more of him next season.
