Het Patel 96* rescues West Zone after early collapse

The top-order trio of Jaiswal, Panchal and Rahane fell for single-digit scores to the South Zone quicks

PTI22-Sep-2022West Zone’s sought-after batting stars, including Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer flattered to deceive as South Zone restricted them to 250 for 8 on the opening day of the Duleep Trophy final in Coimbatore on Wednesday. It was young Gujarat wicketkeeper Het Patel (96 not out) and his 87-run stand for the ninth wicket with Saurashtra’s Jaydev Unadkat (39*) that helped West Zone recover from a precarious 167 for 8 to a safer 250 for 8 at the end of 90 overs. But much was expected of an incredibly strong West Zone’s batting line-up that boasts of Rahane (8), Iyer (37), Sarfaraz Khan (34), Yashasvi Jaiswal (1) and current India A captain Priyank Panchal (7).For South Zone, pace bowlers Basil Thampi (2 for 42 in 15 overs) and CV Stephen (2 for 39 in 10 overs) blew away the West Zone top order within first half an hour. And then in-form left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore (3 for 80 in 32 overs) first choked and then ran through the middle order before lower-order resistance somewhat brought West Zone back into the game.In the morning, the Andhra left-arm seamer Stephen had Jaiswal poking outside the off stump and caught by wicketkeeper Ricky Bhui.Rahane started with a boundary but old habits came to haunt him as Ravi Teja snapped one in the slip cordon when Kerala speedster Thampi got him to edge one behind the stumps. For Panchal, Stephen’s delivery straightened a touch after pitching and had the India A captain plumb infront of the stumps.Once it was 16 for 3, the Mumbai pair of Sarfaraz and Iyer came together and looked like resurrecting the innings with a 48-run stand. While Sarfaraz held one end up, Iyer played his strokes, that included four fours and a six.It was Sai Kishore, who had Iyer caught by B Indrajith just when the batter looked set and got Sarfaraz in identical manner to end his 117-ball vigil. The Tamil Nadu left-arm spinner then rocked West Zone with his third scalp as left-hand batter Shams Mulani was trapped by a delivery that turned back a shade into him.Patel, on his part, stemmed the rot, during his 178-ball stay in which there were six fours and a six. He first added 63 for the seventh wicket with Atit Seth (25) before Thampi got a breakthrough with the old ball.K Gowtham then had Tanush Kotian before Patel and Unadkat defied South Zone for 21 overs.

New Zealand Cricket has announced a full 2022-23 domestic schedule after the last season was hit by widespread Covid-19 disruptions. The season will start with the Plunket Shield in October – followed by the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield and Ford Trophy competitions – and will last for a total of six months till the end of March 2023.An NZC release said, “the formats and playing conditions for all competitions will largely revert to those employed before last season, although the provision to allow full substitutes for players who test positive to Covid-19 will remain.”Auckland will begin their Plunket Shield title defence against Otago at home starting October 18, in the first of eight rounds which will finish on March 24, 2023.The Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, won by Otago Sparks last season, will start on November 19 with the final scheduled for March 4, while the Ford Trophy, also lifted by Auckland last season, will commence on November 22 and include an elimination final on February 17, ahead of a grand final two days later. Both the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield and Ford Trophy finals will be played at the John Davies Oval in Queenstown. The Super Smash draw for men and women, starting December 23, will be announced at the end of this month.NZC’s GM cricket operations Catherine Campbell said the board and the six major associations had decided to retain the flexibility to react to any emergency situation – caused by Covid-19 or otherwise – and were hopeful of an uninterrupted summer.”We’re all looking forward to a full season of domestic cricket being played across the country, from Whangarei in the north to Queenstown and Dunedin in the south,” she said.”With the home international fixtures and the Dream11 Super Smash added, Kiwi cricket fans will have plenty to keep them interested, from the start of October to early April 2023.”In the international home summer, New Zealand men are scheduled to host a T20I tri-series involving Bangladesh and Pakistan in October ahead of the T20 World Cup, followed by a limited-overs visit by India in November after the World Cup, two Tests against England in February 2023 and an all-format visit by Sri Lanka in March. In between, New Zealand will also tour Pakistan and India in December-January.The women’s team will host Bangladesh for ODIs and T20Is in December ahead of the T20 World Cup in South Africa early next year.

Samiullah Shinwari returns for Afghanistan's Asia Cup campaign

Samiullah Shinwari, the 34-year-old batter, has been included in Afghanistan’s 17-man squad for the upcoming men’s Asia Cup in the UAE. Mohammad Nabi continues to be the captain of the side, with Rashid Khan the key man in the line-up.”The Asia Cup is an important event for us and, as such, we have picked our best available players for the event,” Afghanistan’s chief selector Noor Malikzai said. “Samiullah Shinwari has been added to the side for the Asia Cup. He is in very good form and can give further impetus to the batting department, which already boasts Ibrahim Zadran, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Najibullah Zadran and Mohammad Nabi.”Shinwari has represented Afghanistan in 64 T20Is since his debut in 2010, but has not played an international match since March 2020. He was recalled on the back of his performances for Boost Defenders in the recent Shpageeza Cricket League (SCL), where he scored 202 runs from eight innings at an average of 33.66 and strike rate of 122.42. He was the seventh highest run-scorer in the competition.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Left-arm wristspinner Noor Ahmad, who was replaced by Mujeeb Ur Rahman for the ongoing series against Ireland, also made a comeback for the Asia Cup. Ibrahim, Shahidi and Naveen-ul-Haq kept their places in the squad.Ibrahim and Shahidi had strengthened their claims with strong performances in the SCL. Shahidi was the tournament’s leading run-getter with 411 at 58.71, while Ibrahim scored 318 runs at an average of 53. Fast bowler Naveen was the second-highest wicket-taker in the T20 Blast this season, with 24 strikes from 14 matches for Leicestershire.Seam bowler Nijat Masood, spinner Qais Ahmad, and allrounder Sharafuddin Ashraf will travel with the side to the UAE as reserves. However, there was no place for Ihsanullah Janat, who had made his T20I debut earlier this year against Zimbabwe.Afghanistan are currently in Ireland for a five-match T20I series. Having lost the first two matches, Afghanistan won the next two to set up a decider in Belfast on Wednesday, after which the team will leave for the UAE. Afghanistan are in Group B at the tournament, and will open their campaign on August 27 against Sri Lanka in Dubai, before taking on Bangladesh in Sharjah on August 30.

Madrid want him: Man Utd can axe £41m star who’s one of the "best signings"

If Manchester United’s defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers showed anything it’s that no one should be safe from the axe at Old Trafford, with far too many of the current crop continuing to underwhelm.

Aside from a brief purple patch during Ruud van Nistelrooy’s interim stint – which was aided by a favourable run of fixtures – it has been a truly miserable season for the Red Devils, with not even the arrival of Ruben Amorim helping to shift the mood.

Now in 14th in the Premier League after 18 games, having scored just 21 top-flight goals, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find positives, with even man of the moment Amad Diallo looking somewhat off the boil at Molineux. The Ivorian was replaced late on after losing the ball 18 times and winning just five of his 19 total duels.

Man Utd

The change in the dugout, in truth, has only further exposed the lack of quality in the United squad, with focus once again needing to be turned toward recruitment decisions over the last few seasons, in particular, under Erik ten Hag’s watch.

Ten Hag's dismal recruitment record at Man Utd

In defence of the Dutchman, the £12.8m pickup of Noussair Mazraoui continues to look like an astute move, while the signing of Manuel Ugarte is also beginning to bear fruit, with the Uruguayan looking “unstoppable” in the Manchester Derby, according to Bruno Fernandes.

That said, other positives of the Ten Hag tenure are hard to find, with new man Joshua Zirkzee having notably scored just four times since arriving from Bologna this summer.

Looking further back, the £86m capture of Antony remains a baffling addition considering the Brazilian has scored just 12 goals and registered only five assists in 93 games for the club to date. The £70m signing of his compatriot, Casemiro, also deserves scrutiny, with the veteran midfielder now among those that INEOS are reportedly keen to sell.

Among those also signed in that first summer under Ten Hag was Lisandro Martinez, and while the Argentine impressed in that first campaign in English football, it has been a rocky road since. Could an exit even be in store before too long?

Man Utd could boldly sell Real Madrid target

After two defeats from two in Ten Hag’s first two games in charge, fingers were pointed at Martinez, in particular, with the 5 foot 10 centre-back notably hooked at the break amid the 4-0 thrashing at Brentford.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was perhaps among the harshest critics, suggesting at the time that Martinez’s height means that he “cannot play” as a central defender “in the Premier League”.

To his credit, the former Ajax man – who was signed on a £56.7m deal – initially put those doubts to bed after shining for much of the 2022/23 season, having been lauded as one of the club’s “best signings” in “years”, in the words of Patrice Evra.

Lisandro Martinez

The ‘Butcher’s’ mix of silk and steel ensured he swiftly earned cult hero status at the Theatre of Dreams, with it perhaps no surprise that United’s campaign began to tail off in and around the season-ending injury he sustained against Sevilla in April 2023.

That was followed by another injury-hit 2023/24 campaign for the 26-year-old, as he made just 14 appearances in all competitions, albeit while starting alongside Raphael Varane in the FA Cup final.

As writer Liam Canning noted, the World Cup winner “hasn’t looked the same since the injury v Sevilla”, with it having been an especially poor few months for the defender in a United shirt.

Indeed, he was branded “quite simply appalling” by Gary Neville for his tame clearance for Spurs’ second goal in the 4-3 Carabao Cup defeat, while also failing to deal with Dominic Solanke for the home side’s third.

Against Nottingham Forest just a few weeks earlier, the diminutive defender also failed to keep out Chris Wood’s looping header, with journalist Alex Turk recently stating that Martinez has “cost United far too often inside his own box.”

Of course, there is a lot to like about the £41m-rated warrior, yet with reports earlier this month suggesting that Real Madrid are showing interest in his services, perhaps a sale might be in the best interests of all parties.

Indeed, a report from talkSPORT this month also claimed that United ‘could be tempted to cash in’ on Martinez if an offer from Madrid were to be received, with the player ‘not considered off limits for any potential buyer’.

With United seemingly needing more “physicality” in that left centre-back berth – in the words of Canning – a bold decision may need to be made regarding the defender’s future.

Buffon, one of the greatest goalkeepers of all-time, had a proud moment this week as one of his sons, Louis, scored his first goal at international level, but not with Italy. Buffon Jnr made the decision to represent the Czech Republic and turned out for their U18 side, scoring a goal in an impressive 4-1 victory over France.

In 2011, Buffon married Czech beauty pageant winner Alena Seredova, and Louis chose to represent his mother's country over his father's. According to former Czech Republic international Erich Brabec, who now serves as the technical director of the Czech Republic youth teams, a chat he had with Seredova turned out to be a decisive factor.

"I don't know Gianluigi Buffon's opinion, but after finding out that he was on our list of those called up, they contacted him from Italy," Brabec revealed earlier this month (h/t La Stampa). "Personally, I just organised everything necessary with his mother so that he could show up at the training camp with the team."

Although Buffon and Seredova separated in 2014, Louis holds dual citizenship and could yet feature for the Italian national team at the senior level in the future.

DID YOU KNOW?

Louis started his footballing journey with Sisport in 2017, before joining Juventus in 2020. In 2022, he joined CBS Scoula Calcio, before joining the Pisa academy. He is currently assigned to Serie B side Pisa's reserve team in the Primavera division. The winger made his professional debut earlier this month in the team's 3-2 loss to Spezia. Pisa are currently managed by Buffon's former international team-mate Filippo Inzaghi, with whom he won the 2006 World Cup.

Pisa are currently enjoying a brilliant season and are one of the frontrunners for automatic promotion to Serie A next season. Buffon Jnr is expected to be used by Inzaghi for Pisa's next game, in which they take on Cosenza on Saturday.

India could explore options as West Indies seek World Cup Super League gains in dead rubber

Both sides might be in a dilemma with the potential return of Shikhar Dhawan and Kieron Pollard in their respective XIs

Hemant Brar10-Feb-20221:44

Should India test their bench? Should West Indies rejig their batting order?

Big pictureSince the start of the ODI series against South Africa, India have been talking about building a side for the 2023 World Cup. One of their pain areas in the last couple of years has been the lack of a wicket-taking seamer in the powerplay and middle overs. They changed their strategy in the third ODI against South Africa by picking a tall, hit-the-deck bowler in Prasidh Krishna, and continued with it in the West Indies series too.The rewards are there to be seen. Hitting the short-of-a-good-length area, Prasidh picked up 2 for 29 in the first ODI and 4 for 12 in the second. One would think he has presented a strong enough case to be in the XI even when Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami return. In the batting department, Suryakumar Yadav seems to have made a middle-order spot his own. Now that India have won the series, they might consider trying out even more options in the third ODI.West Indies, on the other hand, have been let down by their batting. Before the series, their captain Kieron Pollard underlined the importance of playing out full 50 overs but his side failed to do that in the first two ODIs. On paper, West Indies have a long batting line-up – Odean Smith came in at No. 9 in the last game – but their batters don’t bat deep. Can the likes of Shai Hope, Darren Bravo and Nicholas Pooran take the responsibility and step up?Related

Prasidh Krishna's hit-the-deck style just what India needs

Odean Smith makes a splash in his maiden outing in India

West Indies might have lost the series, but they would like to avoid a whitewash. In more tangible terms, there are ten World Cup Super League points at stake, and West Indies are currently ninth on that table in terms of percentage points.Form guideIndia WWLLL (last five completed ODIs, most recent first)
West Indies LLLLWIn the spotlightSince his last ODI hundred, Virat Kohli has made ten half-centuries in 20 innings in the format. However, in the last few weeks, the narrative has shifted from Kohli-not-getting-a-hundred to Kohli-needs-a-break. In the first ODI in this series, he played a strange four-ball knock where he seemed to be in a hurry. In the second, he was more measured but a loose shot outside off stump ended his stay on 18. On Friday, the question will once again be: will he get his 71st international hundred?West Indies will expect more from their opener Shai Hope•BCCI

Among those who have scored at least 1000 ODI runs for West Indies, no one averages higher than Shai Hope’s 51.13. He doesn’t have a great strike rate (74.70), but it’s his ability to play the anchor’s role that makes him a valuable asset in this West Indies line-up. He has an excellent record against spin too. With the team struggling to last 50 overs, West Indies will expect more from their opener. He wasn’t as tidy behind the stumps in the second ODI, so eyes will be on his wicketkeeping as well.Team newsAfter the second ODI, Rohit Sharma had said Shikhar Dhawan would be back for the final match. That means either Suryakumar or Deepak Hooda will have to sit out; this, despite Suryakumar doing well in his limited ODI appearances, and Hooda providing India with the sixth bowling option. Therefore, it is also difficult to see Shreyas Iyer getting a game, even though he is out of isolation now after testing positive for Covid-19. In the bowling department, India could play Kuldeep Yadav.India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 KL Rahul, 5 Rishabh Pant (wk), 6 Deepak Hooda/Suryakumar Yadav, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Mohammed Siraj, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal/Kuldeep Yadav, 11 Prasidh KrishnaSmith was impressive with both bat and ball in the second ODI. So if Pollard returns, West Indies will have a tough call to make. Can they retain Smith and leave out Bravo, who has had scores of 1, 18, 18, 0 and 2 in his last five innings?West Indies (probable): 1 Shai Hope (wk), 2 Brandon King, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Shamarh Brooks, 5 Nicholas Pooran, 6 Kieron Pollard (capt), 7 Jason Holder, 8 Fabian Allen, 9 Akeal Hosein, 10 Alzarri Joseph, 11 Kemar RoachPitch and conditionsThe pitches so far have helped both seamers and spinners, and it will not be a surprise if that’s the case on Friday as well. The temperature is expected to hover around mid to late 20 degrees Celsius for the majority of the match. There was no dew during the second ODI, and it could stay that way for the third as well.Stats and trivia Prasidh has an economy rate of 2.15 in the series. Since 2020, Rahul has had an average of 67 and a strike rate of 109.23 in the middle order in ODIs. West Indies have failed to last full 50 overs in the last seven ODIs where they batted first.Quotes”I have been striving to get more consistent. When I started, I used to get excited and have too many emotions running through me. But over time, I have had my plans and I have been very clear on what I needed to work on.

'He battered me' – Wayne Rooney opens up on Sir Alex Ferguson's infamous 'hairdryer treatment' at Man Utd & one particularly heated exchange with legendary ex-boss that inspired hat-trick

United legend known for his 'hairdryer treatment'Rooney on receiving end of it many timesOnce hit back at manager and scored a hat-trickFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Ferguson was known for his fiery temper during his legendary time in charge of United, with the Scot having blown up at many of the big names that played under him. His outbursts were named the 'hairdryer treatment' and former Red Devils striker Rooney admitted that he was often on the receiving end of it.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The incident that Rooney remembers most was in the Premier League clash against Portsmouth in November 2009. Rooney opened the scoring with a penalty before the hosts. who were bottom of the table, pulled level through a spot-kick of their own as the teams went in level at half-time. When Ferguson turned his anger towards Rooney, the ex-England star retaliated and was told off by the manager. He then went on to score a second goal three minutes into the second half and a third six minutes later as United won 4-1.

WHAT ROONEY SAID

He told : "I got it a lot, yeah. When he went of course he was scary and intimidating. At times deserved, at times not deserved. But I think he knew the right times to do it and he knew the effect which it would have which normally for me was a positive effect on the pitch.

"There was a game that always sticks out. It was Portsmouth away, we were winning 1-0, I scored in the first half and he came in and he battered me. He just went at me and I felt it wasn't deserved and I went back at him, and probably went back a bit too far. It was a bit disrespectful and he spoke to me after that and made it clear that I can't speak to him like that. And then I went out and scored another two, so I scored a hat-trick in the game.

"It was always after the game, it was on the bus – this is where he was brilliant – he'd be sat on the and he'd walk past you and get a tea or a coffee and when he walks back past you he'd give you a little slap on the head and that was his way of saying it's forgot about."

BCCI postpones Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy amid Covid-19 concerns

The Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy, which was scheduled to begin in January 2022, has been postponed following a fresh surge in the number of Covid-19 cases in India and the growing threat of the Omicron variant. In a letter to the affiliated units of BCCI, which ESPNcricinfo has seen, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said that the primary reason for the postponement is because “participants are still not vaccinated and as such, are vulnerable,” as those below 18 years of age are still not eligible to take the vaccine in the country.”We have been closely monitoring the situation in lndia and across the world, and it is estimated that the caseload will shoot up in the immediate future if the situation is not controlled now,” Shah said in the letter. “After consulting experts and seeking views of the medical teams and operations team, it has been decided that keeping health and safety in mind, the U16 Vijay Merchant Trophy is postponed for this season.”We must exercise caution and not be adventurous and put the health of our talented cricketers at grave risk.”On Thursday, India reported 13,154 new Covid-19 cases, the number of active cases stands at 82,402.The BCCI announced in July that it was confident that all tournaments, including those for various age groups and women, will be played this season.”Ahead of the domestic season, we had said that will endeavor to have a full season across age groups,” the letter further said. “We started off well and are now mid-way into the season having completed 748 matches when we have again encountered a serious issue, The cases across lndia are spiraling and despite being a large number of adults doubly vaccinated, they have still been infected.”The tournament was scheduled to be played between January 9 to 21, in four venues across Agartala and Guwahati.
