India seal 5-0 whitewash as New Zealand suffer another meltdown

Williamson-less New Zealand lose 6 for 25 – and the game

The Report by Deivarayan Muthu02-Feb-20203:38

New Zealand lose from a commanding position once again

Local boy Kane Williamson sat out of the Mount Maunganui T20I, and Ross Taylor made a half-century in his 100th T20I in front of his family, but New Zealand still botched another match that they should’ve won. India had rested their regular captain Virat Kohli and their stand-in captain Rohit Sharma retired hurt on 60, after hurting his left calf, but Jasprit Bumrah and co. helped India rally and secure a 5-0 whitewash. After Taylor had provided a throwback to his IPL heyday and shellacked 34 runs along with Tim Seifert in a Shivam Dube over, New Zealand needed 66 off 60 balls to pull one back in the series. This time they couldn’t even take it into a Super Over and by the time Ish Sodhi launched a pair of sixes in the last over, the game was all but up.Once Navdeep Sani had Seifert flapping a catch to midwicket for 50, New Zealand suffered another irreparable collapse, losing 6 for 25. After cramping Seifert for room, Saini returned to have a leg-side happy Taylor snicking behind for 53 off 47 balls. Bumrah, as is the norm these days, also played a crucial hand in India’s victory, yorking Daryl Mitchell and Tim Southee at the death. The New Zealand batsmen just couldn’t get on top of Jasprit Bumrah•Getty ImagesRahul in the thick of the action
Not too long ago, KL Rahul was a mere Mr. Fix It in India’s line-up, but he has now established himself as one of the key figures in India’s white-ball sides. Although he slowed down against spin, he made it to 45 off 33 balls, and closed out the series with 224 runs in five innings at an average of 56 and strike rate of just a shade under 145.After Sanju Samson (2) opened once again and threw away another opportunity, Rahul set the early pace, cracking Southee for three boundaries in the third over, the pick of them being an exquisite lofted six over extra-cover. By the end of the Powerplay, Rahul claimed 33 off India’s 53.Spinners Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner then tied him down in the middle overs with their clever variations in length and pace. From 33 off 17 balls, Rahul managed a mere 12 off his next 16 balls. As a result, he went searching for a scoring opportunity against Hamish Bennett and wound up scooping a leading edge to extra-cover.Rahul wasn’t done yet though. He put in another fine shift behind the stumps and juggled it with the additional responsibility of captaincy after Sharma had injured himself and didn’t take the field in the second innings. By the stroke of midnight, Rahul was soaking in India’s 5-0 win as their captain.Injury cuts short a potential Sharma special
After challenging India to bat first, Sharma followed a familiar template: he took his time to get his eye in and then unfurled a variety of strokes. He was on 19 off 20 balls at one point, but found a higher gear when he carved Sodhi’s flipper for four. In the next over, he heaved a long hop from Santner into the stands beyond midwicket. Sharma took Sodhi for two sixes, and progressed to his fifty off 35 balls. Just when he threated to go bananas, he seemed to have hurt his calf while running between the wickets and hobbled off the field in the 17th over. India were 140 for 2 at that point.KL Rahul pulls during the course of his quick 45•Getty ImagesSouthee’s good lengths = bad lengths
After conceding 23 runs in the Powerplay, Southee brought himself back at the death, and leaked 29 in his last two. He routinely missed his lengths and allowed India to breach 160. When Southee missed his straight yorker in the last over, Manish Pandey shovelled him over long-on for six. When Southee missed the wide yorker, Pandey scythed him over point for four.Another chapter in NZ’s horror story
Colin Munro gave New Zealand’s chase of 164 some early impetus when he slugged Washington Sundar for two fours and a six. However, Washington shifted his angle of attack to over the wicket, cramped Munro for room, and bowled him for 15 off 6 balls. Martin Guptill had been the first to go, for 2, when Bumrah pinged him on the back thigh – although ball-tracking revealed later that it would have bounced over leg stump.Seventeen for 2 became 17 for 3, when a panic-stricken mix-up saw Tom Bruce fall for a second successive duck. Seifert and Taylor then revived the chase by putting on 99 in 56 balls. After settling in, Seifert unveiled the sweep against Yuzvendra Chahal and then scooped Dube for four.At the other end, Taylor got his hockey-swipes going, with 38 of his 53 runs coming on the leg side. However, Seifert’s dismissal triggered a terminal slide and there would be no way back for New Zealand again. For India, their spinners Washington and Chahal bowled an over each at the death and didn’t give up a single boundary. Shardul Thakur eventually defended 20 off the final over to prolong New Zealand’s misery.

Leeds academy star who scores every 94 mins could be Piroe’s successor

Leeds United have not found goals hard to come by in the Championship this season with the fourth-most goals scored in the second tier so far.

Only Ipswich Town, Leicester City, and Southampton have found the back of the net more than the Whites, who have scored 70 times in 38 matches.

Six players have scored at least six goals in the Championship for Daniel Farke's side, and three players have hit double figures for goals in the league.

Crysencio Summerville.

Crysencio Summerville (15), Dan James (12), and Joel Piroe (11) have all scored more than ten goals in the division for the Yorkshire-based outfit, as the team competes to secure promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Leeds also have a few talented young strikers coming up through the ranks, who could eventually emerge as first-team starters for the German head coach.

Mateo Joseph, who has worked his way into the squad in recent months, could be viewed as the long-term successor to Patrick Bamford at Elland Road.

Meanwhile, U18s star Marley Wilson, who is younger and has more time on his hands to develop before making a first-team emergence, could eventually be Piroe's successor.

Mateo Joseph's first-team potential

The Spain U21 international, who previously played for England at U20 level, has made 13 appearances as a substitute in the Championship this season for Leeds.

Farke has trusted him to come off the bench and attempt to make an impact in matches, although the young gem is yet to deliver a goal or an assist.

Joseph did, however, have his breakthrough moment(s) at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea in the FA Cup last month with both of the side's goals in a 3-2 loss against the Premier League side.

The 20-year-old dynamo produced a composed right-footed finish to put Leeds 1-0 up early on before making an excellent run to the back post to head in the equaliser to make it 2-2 in the second half, which proved that he does have the ability to make an impact in the final third at senior level.

His first-team emergence came after an exceptional return for the U21s at youth level, following his move from Espanyol in 2022, as you can see in the table below.

Joseph, after a slow start in his first season at the club, has racked up 17 goals and three assists in 23 Premier League 2 outings since the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

He could now be viewed as the natural successor to Bamford, who turns 31 later this year, whilst Farke could look deeper into the academy to find Joseph 2.0 and an heir to Piroe's position in the form of Wilson, who has starred for the U18s this season.

Marley Wilson's academy form for Leeds

The 18-year-old starlet is a versatile gem who initially made his breakthrough for the U18s during the 2021/22 campaign as a right winger or centre-forward.

Wilson produced two goals and one assist in 11 appearances in all competitions that term in an understated start to life at that level, at the age of just 16.

He was then deployed as a left winger on a regular basis throughout the 2022/23 season, and chipped in with six goals and four assists in 19 outings in all competitions, including five goals and four assists in 13 U18 Premier League games.

Daniel Farke.

The then-17-year-old was also exposed to the U21 set-up for the first time with three appearances for the club in the Premier League 2, with zero goals or assists in 121 minutes of action.

This season, Wilson has primarily been used as a centre-forward or an attacking midfielder and showcased his lethal finishing in front of goal with a terrific return of ten goals in 12 matches.

He has scored ten goals in 943 minutes of action across the U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup, which means that the teenage dynamo has averaged a goal every 94 minutes in all competitions for the U18s this term.

These statistics suggest that playing centrally is his best position as he has been in the form of his Leeds career so far as a number nine or ten, which are the two roles Piroe has alternated between for the first-team this season.

Joel Piroe's form for Leeds this season

The Dutchman, who was signed from Championship rivals Swansea on a permanent deal last summer, has had mixed success in the league this term.

Piroe, as aforementioned, is one of only three Leeds players with more than ten league goals for the club but his finishing has left a little to be desired at times.

Leeds duo Ethan Ampadu and Joel Piroe.

He has scored 11 goals from an xG (Expected Goals) of 11.71 and missed seven 'big chances' across 37 appearances in the Championship during the 2023/24 campaign.

This suggests that the left-footed marksman has been wasteful at times and not made the most of the high-quality opportunities that have come his way in the second tier.

As you can see in the table above, Piroe has offered little to the team outside of his goalscoring prowess, as he has rarely provided creativity and has struggled physically.

Opposition players have dominated him in physical duels – winning 63% of their contests with the Dutch forward – and this does not suggest that the 24-year-old attacker is likely to cope well with a potential step up in physicality or quality in the Premier League, if Leeds win promotion.

Leeds may, therefore, need to find a long-term replacement for Piroe further down the line, whether that is this summer, or a future summer, and Wilson could be identified as a possible option.

The 18-year-old star is six years younger than the former Swansea centre-forward and has showcased his immense goalscoring talent at youth level this season, in similar positions to Piroe, which is why Farke could look to him as a successor to the Dutchman at some point.

This Leeds academy "monster" could replace Cooper at Elland Road

The talented young colossus could be the next starlet to make the step up to the first-team.

ByDan Emery Feb 21, 2024

For now, Wilson must make the step up to the U21s and prove himself at that level before then making his mark in the first-team in the future.

Arsenal’s exciting Hale End star could be their own Kobbie Mainoo

Arsenal taking influence from Manchester United? Ha, now there's a pretty awful thought to behold.

Under their latest managers, Mikel Arteta and Erik ten Hag, the clubs have headed in two separate directions.

While Arsenal are fighting on two fronts, sitting at the top of the Premier League and in the Champions League quarter-finals, United have been dumped out of Europe and are sixth in the table, half a dozen points off Tottenham in fifth.

Why, therefore, would Arteta take influence from anything going on at Old Trafford? Well, a certain Kobbie Mainoo stands as a testament to why you should always hand opportunities to your young players.

The Arsenal boss knows that first hand having been the man to nurture the likes of Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe, two Hale End graduates, but since then opportunities for academy players haven't been too forthcoming in N5.

Kobbie Mainoo's rise at Man United

Heading into the 2023/24 campaign the 18-year-old United star had been seen on just three occasions at senior level.

That's hardly a surprise really. They had spent £70m on Casemiro in 2022 and were hellbent on utilising the likes of Fred and Scott McTominay.

While Fred has departed Old Trafford, the other two names remain. Yet, it's Mainoo who is shining brightest.

Kobbie Mainoo in Premier League action for Manchester United.

He first started a league outing in their 3-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park late last year and since that moment hasn't looked back. Now a fixture in the England set-up, too good for Gareth Southgate to ignore, Ten Hag is also finding it tricky to drop the teenager. Indeed, Mainoo has missed just two league games since that Everton win.

What does he offer? Well, his coach at U18 level Travis Binnion paints a rather nice picture: “His strengths are close control, good awareness, body contact. He’s really good in both boxes, he’s combative. He’s got a nice blend of many skills," he told The Athletic in 2022.

So, do Arsenal have any players like Mainoo in their academy?

Arsenal's answer to Kobbie Mainoo

Given the meteoric rise of the football club under Arteta's watch in the last few years, the Spaniard hasn't found the opportunity to hand many first-team chances to those in the academy.

One lucky soul has been Ethan Nwaneri. He became the youngest player in Premier League history at 15 years, five months and 28 days in the 2022/23 campaign when he came off the bench against Brentford. Since then Nwaneri has only been seen once more after he was substituted onto the field in the 6-0 victory over West Ham.

He has a partner in crime, however, who we're yet to see earn senior minutes; Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Aged 17, the talented teen has trained with the first team on multiple occasions and has been fielded in various squads without making the pitch.

Lewis-Skelly was on the bench against Lens in the Champions League last year and sat among the subs for the clash with Brighton in the league back in December.

It feels a matter of time before the youngster makes his debut. Rated incredibly highly by those at the Emirates, he offers similar qualities to the aforementioned Mainoo.

myles-lewis-skelly-arsenal-charlie-patino-academy-transfer-ornstein

Primarily a central midfielder, analyst Ben Mattinson has described the Hale End star as a "crazy athlete, insane ball-carrier with physicality and tackling ability."

A player capable of a lung-busting run forward to break the lines, Lewis-Skelly isn't all just power. Like Mainoo he has the technical elegance to dazzle opponents with Mattinson outlining his "turn radius" as one notable strength.

That's one area where Man United's wonderkid thrives too. We saw that in the dramatic FA Cup quarter-final between Ten Hag's side and Liverpool. It's also something national team boss Southgate has identified. "To get Kobbie on the pitch was a brilliant moment for him and his family," he said. "You saw a couple of turns and composed moments. There's a bit of an indication about what he might become."

We're not suggesting we'll see Lewis-Skelly anywhere near England recognition in a years time but he clearly possesses the same intricate qualities that makes Mainoo such a special talent.

What might set him apart is his versatility. The Standard suggested last week that he's someone the senior coaching staff at Arsenal thinks could become a left-back in the mould of Oleksandr Zinchenko.

For now, however, they suggest the plan is to keep him in a no.8 setting, learning from none other than Declan Rice. That's not a bad player to be tutored by, is it?

Tattersall leads fightback after Wood threatens mayhem

Yorkshire’s top order was blown but the middle order lead a fightback to give the home side hope

Paul Edwards at North Marine Road18-Aug-2019

Luke Wood claimed a four-wicket haul•Getty Images

Time was when Scarborough had a therapeutic effect on its visitors. There used to be a spa near the South Sands and Turner’s painting of the town shows a beach busy with work yet luminously calm. Until they defeated Surrey in July such tranquility had eluded Yorkshire’s cricketers in modern times. Rather than a stronghold, North Marine Road had been a stopping-off place for three successive county champions, and any nervousness was rekindled in the first hour of this game when the home side slumped to 38 for 5, all the wickets taken by the left-arm new-ball bowler, Luke Wood.Yorkshire’s fortunes were revived and their supporters’ blood-pressure stabilised by Jonny Tattersall and Tim Bresnan’s 121-run stand for the sixth wicket but Nottinghamshire still shaded a fascinating first day of a match they must surely win if their chances of avoiding relegation are to be grounded in more than mere arithmetic. Their coach, Peter Moores, can thus take some comfort from the four wickets taken by Liam Patterson-White, the slow left-armer preferred to Samit Patel for this game. And he can be even more encouraged by the calmness with which Jake Libby and Ben Slater put on 41 in the final 17 overs of the day. There is a great deal of work for the visitors to do if they are to record their first victory of the season but they have at least laid some foundations. It could, of course, have been even better for Chris Nash’s side. Had Tom Moores caught Tattersall’s edge off Jake Ball instead of gloving it to the boundary at the Trafalgar Square End, Yorkshire’s wicketkeeper would have been in the pavilion with only four runs against his name instead of the 92 he carefully accumulated. But by the time that catch was dropped, Nottinghamshire had already grabbed an initiative they never quite surrendered. That it should have been so was entirely to the credit of Wood, one of whose many virtues being that he eschews the luxury of a loosener. Every ball in his first over compelled a response and in two instances, the shot played was inadequate. Adam Lyth nicked a fine outswinger to Moores before Gary Ballance, disconcerted by extra bounce, thick-edged a catch to Libby in the gully. Overjoyed by each success, Wood probed for more. In his second over Tom Kohler-Cadmore played for inswing but was bowled by one that held its line. Ten minutes later Harry Brook’s atrocious waft outside the off stump merely gave a catch to Moores and Yorkshire’s subsequent tentative recovery was ended on the hour when Will Fraine snicked Wood to Nash at third slip. The remainder of the morning and much of the afternoon session was dominated by the batting of Tattersall and Bresnan, two batsmen whose contrasting style were complementary. Bresnan is such a battle-hardened old dog that he may not remember the last time he learned any new tricks. His 58 at Scarborough this afternoon was filled with the meaty clumps, two of them off Paul Coughlin, of the type one recalled from his salad days – another alien concept where Bresnan is concerned. But his innings was still a mightily effective effort and his stand with Tattersall offered home supporters by far their best watching of the day.Tattersall is a deft batsman in red-ball cricket. Though plainly capable of the straight drives he executed off both Ball and Luke Fletcher he is more likely to proceed by way of well-timed tucks off the hip or the skilful deflections which keep the scoreboard moving, even when big shots are not possible. He prospers almost by stealth. Such attributes made Nottinghamshire’s failure to take the chance he offered all the more regrettable even if the let-off did not seem critical at the time. That the century partnership was raised by a no-ball from Wood symbolised both Yorkshire’s recovery and Nottinghamshire’s apparent failure to capitalise on an increasingly distant first hour. But just when the home side seemed likely to control the day entirely Patterson-White turned one just enough to take the edge of Bresnan’s bat and Moores completed the dismissal. Before tea Keshav Maharaj had gone, too, yorked by Fletcher, and when Tattersall’s cut only presented Moores with his fourth catch of the day, Nottinghamshire were all but sure they would be batting this evening. What they would make of it was far less certain. Of the top-order batsmen at Trent Bridge only Nash has an average above 30 this season. But Slater and Libby did all that was required of them and those eventless evening overs offered some hope to supporters whose travails have been many.

Rangers could sign £5m Raskin partner who’s "like Ivan Rakitic"

Glasgow Rangers enjoyed a week-long mid-season training camp in the Spanish sunshine, yet it culminated in a 1-0 defeat to Hertha Berlin over the last weekend.

It was a friendly match and not too much should be read into it. However, the performance was below par and Philippe Clement will be hoping the team can improve as they face FC Copenhagen this evening at Ibrox in their final match before the domestic season returns.

The onus for Clement now is to spend the next two weeks seeking to improve his squad during the current January transfer window.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

Several positions require some improvement, especially with six players out of contract come the end of the season.

With Ryan Jack and John Lundstram among those six, could the Belgian coach perhaps look to bring in another central midfielder this month?

Rangers’ search for another midfielder

Much has been made of the Light Blues’ search for a new left-back and striker, yet there have been a few midfielders linked in the last couple of weeks.

According to Football Scotland last week, the Gers have reportedly ‘checked on the conditions’ of Croatian gem Marko Bulat, who is currently playing for Dinamo Zagreb in his homeland.

Marko Bulat

The report goes on to state that Nils Koppen has sent scouts to watch Bulat in action for Zagreb recently as the Gers look to potentially make a move for the player.

There remains one stumbling block, however; the transfer fee. Zagreb value one of their prized assets at around £5m and this could prove to be too much for the Ibrox side to spend, especially in January.

Clement needs to be planning ahead due to the contract situations surrounding a couple of his midfielders, however, and this may mean he has to act sooner rather than later.

Kemar Roofe, Jon McLaughlin, Borna Barisic, Leon Balogun, Jack and Lundstram are all free to speak to other clubs as of this month ahead of leaving for free this summer, and the majority of them will likely depart Ibrox.

The latter two are perhaps the players who deserve extensions, in particular Lundstram, who has shone under Clement this season.

Abdallah SIma – Loan ends

The former Sheffield United midfielder has started 17 of the 18 competitive matches under the Belgian and will remain a mainstay in the team until the end of the season at least.

If these two do leave Ibrox, Clement has the likes of Jose Cifuentes, Nico Raskin and even youngster Bailey Rice to call upon ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, but it could be Raskin who is ready to become a key player under the manager.

What the future holds for Nico Raskin at Rangers

The young midfielder made a solid impact upon arriving in Glasgow last January as he finished the season ranked third for tackles per game (1.8) and sixth for successful dribbles per game (0.9) as he demonstrated his tenacious nature and his ability to push forward often from the engine room.

This gave him a solid platform to work on ahead of the current season, yet an injury suffered against Hearts in what was Clement’s third match in charge of the club ruled the 22-year-old out for 14 matches and severely disrupted any progress he had made during the embryonic stages of the season.

Nico Raskin

Despite the setback, Raskin currently leads the way among the squad with regard to tackles per game (2.7) in the top flight, along with ranking seventh for accurate passes per game (39.4) which indicates how impressive he was prior to the injury.

What he needs now is a long-term partner in the heart of the midfield who could help elevate his game to new levels.

Signing Bulat from Zagreb could be an ideal player to partner Raskin with ahead of next season and their respective styles of play could compliment each other rather well.

How Marko Bulat would fit into the Rangers side

Like Raskin, Bulat tends to operate slightly deeper in the midfield, yet he can still offer a reliable attacking threat when required, evidenced by the fact he has scored five goals and grabbed three assists across 23 matches for his club this season.

Indeed, the 5 foot 10 midfielder currently ranks fourth among the Zagreb squad in the top flight for goals and assists (five) along with ranking fourth for shots on target per game (one) and sixth for key passes per game (1.3), which suggests he is productive in the final third for his team.

Rangers Journal founder Kai Watson profiled the young sensation amid rumours linking him with a move to Glasgow recently, even comparing him to a young Ivan Rakitic, saying:

“From watching Bulat and looking at the numbers, he reminds me of a young Ivan Rakitić. He’s a box-to-box midfielder who is a very capable defender and a goal-scoring threat. Technically gifted and intelligent in and out of possession, hence the Rakitić comparison.”

This type of skillset could work wonders alongside someone like Raskin, who would be free to do the dirty work in the heart of the pitch and clean up in front of the defence, allowing Balut to utilise his box-to-box abilities and create chances for others.

It could end up being a frightening partnership, especially as the duo are both only 22 years of age, and they could be the future of the Gers midfield, without a shadow of a doubt.

Raskin will only get better the more he plays under Clement and with Jack and Lundstram potentially moving on this summer, there is a slot available alongside the former Standard Liege starlet, which Balut would slot into with ease.

If the Gers don’t make a move for him this month, they had better hope his performances don’t improve, otherwise they could face some stiff competition from plenty of other teams looking to secure his signature.

Much will depend on what funds Clement has to spend in the summer transfer window, yet with the wage bill set to be freed up by a sizeable chunk due to some departures, signing Balut should be his main focus.

Pulisic was a revelation amid a poor season for Milan. Deployed as a right-winger by out of favour coach Pioli, the Chelsea loanee enjoyed his most prolific club season to date – trailing only veteran striker Olivier Giroud with 12 Serie A goals in the campaign.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference, Musah, Pulisic's Milan and USMNT teammate, acknowledged the winger's improvement: "He's grown so much playing on the right wing, been so effective this season, scored so many goals and assisted and he's been the best attacker in our team. The manager has given them confidence. He had faith in him, and it was a mutual thing. And the confidence that the manager gave him reflected in the field."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pulisic will be expected to do the same for the USMNT this summer. The attacking midfielder figures to be a key part of manager Gregg Berhalter's setup – with Musah in a deeper role – as the hosts look to make a run on home soil in the Copa America.

The two will likely both be in action for the USMNT as they take on Colombia this Saturday in the first of two high profile Copa America warmup fixtures. The duo of games would seem to be an ideal measuring stick for Berhalter's side ahead of what could be a pivotal summer in his tenure.

Man Utd could offer club Aaron Wan-Bissaka to sign top target in swap deal

Manchester United are entering a new era under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and could now look at a swap deal involving one of their first-team players to help land a top target, according to a report.

Man Utd to miss out on Timo Werner

This month, Manchester United could be in the market for arrivals as they seek to improve on their disappointing campaign so far under Erik ten Hag; however, one man who won't be pitching up at Old Trafford is RB Leipzig star Timo Werner, who is closing in on a loan move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Speaking in his Daily Briefing via CaughtOffside, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed why the Red Devils chose to pass on the chance to sign the Germany international,

"For me it’s a smart deal. It’s a loan, Spurs have buy option but not mandatory so they can get a look at the player before committing. Timo is super hungry as he believes this is great opportunity for him. Manchester United also considered Werner as a possibility but then they decided not to proceed also because it’s not clear yet what kind of player they want."

Of course, signing players for the sake of it is never a wise move for any given club; nevertheless, some Manchester United fans may feel frustrated as one of their divisional rivals closes in a reported target after Chief Operating Officer Collette Roche suggested at a fans forum she is not expecting the January window to be a busy one regarding new arrivals.

Despite this, a new report has emerged claiming that Manchester United could look to enact a swap deal involving a prominent first-team man to sign a key target.

Man Utd keen on swap deal to land Michael Olise…

According to The Daily Star, Manchester United could look to enact a swap deal to sign Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise by offering £100,000 per week earner Aaron Wan-Bissaka in exchange. The report claims that France Under-21 international Olise is viewed as one of Ratcliffe's top targets once they are fully in position to step up their activity at Old Trafford in the summer.

The Red Devils extended Wan-Bissaka's contract by 12 months due to a clause in his deal and are believed to have prolonged his stay in the North West to try and use him as leverage in this potential transfer saga. On the flip side, Olise has a buyout stipulation which will kick into action later this year that is mooted to be around double the previous £35 million fee quoted before he extended his time at Selhurst Park, so United may need to also offer some cash along with the right-back.

Labelled "wonderful" by boss Roy Hodgson, the 22-year-old has recorded five goals and one assist in nine appearances despite battling with a hamstring issue for much of the campaign (Olise statistics – Transfermarkt).

Whether sacrificing Wan-Bissaka would be a viable trade-off for Olise is a subjective matter; nevertheless, there is no doubt that the latter would offer a different dimension in the final third for Manchester United.

  • Hojlund won't be a Premier League legend
  • Neville wanted the young forward to be a second striker
  • Failed to make impact on debut Man Utd season
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Danish forward, who moved from Atalanta to the Premier League, had a slow start to his journey at Old Trafford. He somewhat turned things around at the start of 2024 having scored seven goals in six consecutive games. But since then he has managed to find the back of the net only once as United continue to struggle in the league.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ex-Red Devils defender Neville has now shared his opinion on Hojlund as he claimed the 21-year-old forward would never reach the heights of Erling Haaland and Sergio Aguero and become a Premier League legend. He further stated that the club should have signed a high-profile striker from whom Hojlund could have learned while playing second fiddle to him.

  • WHAT GARY NEVILLE SAID

Speaking on , the former England player said, "I think this is a kid that needs persevering with. I looked at Ollie Watkins before. He's not going to become a Haaland or an Aguero, one of the great strikers in Premier League history, I don't think. But he can become an Ollie Watkins. You can look at someone like that, I think I can get to 20 goals.

"I wish he was the second striker this season. I wish he was learning, I did the interview with Eric ten Hag last week. He mentioned Harry Kane. If he was learning off Kane now or playing with Kane, I think you'd see a completely different player. Secondly, he's 21 years of age. He's a little bit scruffy in his work is his first season in the Premier League, and he reminds me a little bit of Darwin Nunez. He reminds me a little bit of Nicholas Jackson."

He added, "When you look at them, they're projects. Manchester United, this moment in time is their only striker. Manchester United is the only striker in the club. Forget Anthony Martial. He's not been there for years. If you look at Nunez and if you look at Hojlund, the really interesting thing for me is that that shop conversion is up 22% so when he actually gets chances, he's actually better than Jackson and Nunez.

"Now you might say, okay, but I think that's something really to work with. The expected goals at the bottom, he's only expected to score 7.4 goals. The service in delivery into him is poor you look at Nunez and Jackson, Jackson, they're at 16.3 and 17, double."
