Newcastle Transfer News; Advanced Talks For £15m Defender

Newcastle United are in "advanced talks" over a move to sign Southampton youngster Tino Livramento over a move this summer, according to a key transfer update.

How good is Tino Livramento?

The 20-year-old joined the Saints from Chelsea back in 2021, having been a part of the Blues' academy but ending up moving further south, in order to be a regular elsewhere.

Livramento has proven to be one of the few bright sparks for Southampton since his arrival, catching the eye with his performances at right-back and making 34 appearances in total. Sadly, that figure would be a lot higher, had the youngster not suffered a cruciate ligament injury that kept him sidelined for many months last term.

With Saints now relegated from the Premier League, however, they will find it extremely difficult to keep hold of a number of star players, such as James Ward-Prowse and Romeo Lavia.

Newcastle aren't wasting any time this summer when it comes to bolstering Eddie Howe's side, with Sandro Tonali set to make the move to St James' Park in a deal worth €70m, and another move for Livramento is also gathering pace.

Are Newcastle in talks with Livramento?

According to The Telegraph's John Percy and Luke Edwards, the Magpies are in advanced talks to sign the right-back, with Howe personally keen.

"Newcastle United are in advanced talks with relegated Southampton over a potential £15 million deal for Tino Livramento.

Eddie Howe, the Newcastle manager, wants to raid the Championship club for the 20-year-old defender and negotiations are ongoing, though they remain apart at this stage on valuation."

Livramento could be such an exciting signing by Newcastle this summer, being viewed as someone who can provide competition for Kieran Trippier, but also eventually usurp him as the first-choice right-back at the club.

Theo Walcott once claimed that he was "fantastic" and had an "aura" about him, even despite his tender years, and assuming he overcomes his serious injury, he could have a massive career ahead of him.

Livramento, who shares the same agency as Howe, already has five caps to his name for England's Under-21s – again, that could be more without the fitness woes – and in an era of so many impressive English right-backs, whether it be Trippier, Trent Alexander-Arnold or Reece James, the Saints starlet could be the next great one to come along.

Improved squad depth could be key for Newcastle next season as well, with Champions League football making their schedule far more intense, and Livramento is someone who could come in and dovetail with Trippier, arguably playing less but still having an important role to play week in, week out.

Phil Hay Shares Exciting Leeds Manager News From Elland Road

Leeds United are in a precarious position with uncertainty surrounding the takeover, sporting director and next manager still yet to be settled and now a new update has emerged from a reliable source on the club's pursuit to land Sam Allardyce's successor.

What's the latest on Leeds' interest in Carlos Corberan?

According to The Athletic's Leeds correspondent Phil Hay, the club have opened the door for Carlos Corberan to return to Elland Road this summer.

As per a report written for the publication, Hay claims that the former Leeds first-team coach is one of the many candidates being considered by the club and has revealed that the West Bromwich Albion manager has a release clause in his contract.

Will Carlos Corberan be the next Leeds manager?

It is no secret that Corberan boasts a unique relationship with the West Yorkshire club that could make him an extremely attractive prospect for the team and the supporters over any of the other candidates.

The 40-year-old coach polished and developed his successful managerial skill set under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa, earning a promotion from leading the U23s to working alongside the Argentine in Leeds' rise from the second tier to top-flight football.

Now Corberan could follow in the footsteps of his mentor by providing some stability at the club and guiding them back to the Premier League, as well as using his experience and relationships with some of the players to improve their individual performances next season.

One player who could massively benefit from Corberan's return to Elland Road is Patrick Bamford, with the striker struggling for fitness and consistency in front of goal over the last two seasons.

patrick-bamford-leeds-united

The attacking-minded manager – hailed "talented" by Bielsa – has significantly improved West Brom's goal-scoring form since his arrival in October when the club were 23rd in the Championship table after tallying up just two wins in their first 16 outings.

Indeed, under Steve Bruce, they scored just 1.12 goals per game compared to the 1.39 under the Spaniard.

Despite losing his debut fixture against Sheffield United, Corberan went on to win the next nine out of ten league fixtures and ultimately lead his side to ninth – just three points shy of a playoff spot on the final day.

The former Huddersfield Town boss commonly deploys his teams in a 4-3-2-1 formation just like Bielsa – a formation that Bamford thrived in under his former manager in both the second tier and upon their promotion to the Premier League.

In the Championship winning season (2019/20) Bamford scored 16 goals and registered four assists and in his first top-flight season (2020/21), the Leeds striker found the back of the net 17 times and delivered eight assists, all whilst Corberan was still working alongside Bielsa.

With that being said, there is no doubt that Corberan would be warmly welcomed at Elland Road should he return this summer and if he could improve Bamford's goal-scoring consistency in the process it would put Leeds in a great position to compete in the Championship next season.

Voges hopes selectors will keep the faith

Adam Voges hopes his remarkably productive home summer last year will hold him in good stead when Australia’s selectors assess the fallout from the recent whitewash at the hands of Sri Lanka

Brydon Coverdale25-Aug-2016Adam Voges hopes his remarkably productive home summer last year will hold him in good stead when Australia’s selectors assess the fallout from the recent whitewash at the hands of Sri Lanka. Australia lost all three Tests in turning conditions, and will face much of the same early next year they will travel to India for four Tests. But in the meantime, they will host South Africa and Pakistan for six Tests on surfaces that are far more familiar.Voges was one of the batsmen who struggled to adapt to the slow, spinning pitches in Sri Lanka, where he failed to score a fifty across the three Tests and averaged 19.66. However, last summer he piled up 660 runs at 165.00 in the six home Tests against New Zealand and West Indies, and he also scored profusely on the tour of New Zealand that followed. But at 36, Voges knows that all his mountains of runs will count for little if he endures a prolonged dry patch, and scores of 47, 12, 8, 28, 22 and 1 constitute the beginnings of one. The home Test summer begins at the WACA against South Africa in early November, and Voges hopes that his track record at that ground, and in Australia generally, will be enough to convince the selectors to stick with him.”The first home Test for the summer is here at the WACA and obviously conditions are fairly different to what we’ve just experienced,” Voges said on on Thursday. “I take a lot of confidence out of what I was able to do last summer, and hopefully get that opportunity here in Perth at my home ground, somewhere that I’ve grown up playing and know the conditions really well.”I’ve given the selectors the opportunity to leave me out if they wanted to, with how I’ve performed in Sri Lanka. Hopefully they keep the faith with me. I still think I’ve got plenty to offer. I take a lot of confidence out of what I was able to do last summer, and really the form and the run that I’ve had over the last couple of years, hopefully the last three Tests have just been a small blip on what’s been a pretty good couple of years.”Four times from the six innings in Sri Lanka, Voges was dismissed by Rangana Herath. However, he was far from alone in struggling against Herath, who claimed 28 wickets for the series and caused Australia major problems in all three Tests.”We didn’t have a lot of answers for him, to be honest,” Voges said. “He has very subtle variations with his release points, his pace, where he stands on the wicket. But ultimately the ball seems to end up relatively in the same area. Some spin, some don’t. And he’s just very crafty. In conditions that suit him, like they did over there, he’s certainly a handful.”It took until the third Test for Australia to find a batsman to build on a start and go on to reach triple figures – Shaun Marsh and Steven Smith both did so in the first innings in Colombo – but by then the series was decided. Sri Lanka had wrapped up their triumph in Galle, where they set Australia 413 to win. Voges came to the crease at 61 for 4 and reverse swept his first ball, persisting with the shot until it brought him undone on 28.”We spoke before that fourth innings and on a Galle wicket that was spinning quite a bit, the skipper and the coach asked the batting group to be a lot more proactive with the way we went about things,” Voges said. “The reverse sweep was basically my version of it. I played one first ball, which was a little bit gutsy, but there was only one bloke on the off side and eight on the leg side.”My thinking was that if I could get one away it would bring at least one of those guys back over and maybe I could find a couple of gaps on the leg side … It always looks bad when you get out playing that sort of shot, but at the time I thought it was the best way to try and combat them and score runs in those conditions … If I had my time again I’d still play the shot – maybe a little more selectively and mix it up a little bit more than what I did.”

Warks leapfrog Yorks with big win

Yorkshire Day was not exactly Yorkshire’s day at Headingley where they lost to Warwickshire by 114 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in the Royal London Cup

ScorecardJonathan Trott made his 19th List A hundred (file photo)•Getty ImagesYorkshire Day was not exactly Yorkshire’s day at Headingley where they lost to Warwickshire by 114 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in the Royal London Cup. But in the end there was a silver lining in the grey clouds for both sides as they managed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition.Yorkshire, however, having led the North Group for quite some time, had to be content with third place and an away match whereas a well-deserved victory for Warwickshire saw them finish second with a home tie to look forward to.Chasing Warwickshire’s 283 for 6, Yorkshire, who rested Tim Bresnan, lost an over because of two short stoppages for rain and saw their target reduced by a run but they never got anywhere near and were bowled out for 167 in 37.4 overs. When their ninth wicket went down at 148, they could still have managed a home tie if they had made it to 189 but they were still 22 short when Steven Patterson was dismissed. The visitors were indebted to three outstanding individual performances, first Man-of-the-Match Jonathan Trott scored a beautifully constructed 118 and spinners Ateeq Javid and Jeetan Patel then claimed seven wickets between them – Javid leading the way with a career-best 4 for 42.Adam Lyth and David Willey put on a quick 22 at the start of the Yorkshire reply but the former then fell to a great slip catch by Laurie Evans and – with Alex Lees run out soon afterwards – Yorkshire were never in the hunt. Australian Travis Head batted soundly for his 53 from 63 deliveries with five fours but when he was bowled off stump by Javid, Yorkshire were 125 for 6 and sinking fast.Winning the toss, the away side found runs hard to come by in the opening stages against the new-ball pairing of Willey and Patterson and only 16 had been scored by the eighth over when Will Porterfield fell to a tumbling catch to his right by Liam Plunkett at midwicket off Patterson. It stayed tight for a while when Trott came in but he worked the ball around well and made sure that the score kept ticking over throughout his innings. Another fine diving catch, this time by wicketkeeper Andy Hodd brought Plunkett the wicket of Warwickshire’s other opener, Sam Hain, who managed only 10 in 13 overs.Ian Bell came in at 40 for 2 but Yorkshire kept a tight hold on the reins and the visitors managed only 74 from the first 20 overs. Shortly afterwards Trott completed his half-century from 61 balls with five boundaries by taking a single off Plunkett but Bell chipped the next ball from the paceman straight to Willey at cover, having contributed 21 to the third-wicket stand of 52.Trott continued to shine and Tim Ambrose survived a difficult chance on nine when he struck Azeem Rafiq to deep midwicket and Karl Carver made a lot of ground to get to the ball but could not make it stick. Five penalty runs were awarded when a ball from Plunkett to Trott went through to Hodd and deflected off his glove on to a helmet placed behind the wicketkeeper.Trott’s 19th List A century came off 122 balls with nine fours but – with the partnership worth 93 – Ambrose was out for 34, driving Rafiq straight to Will Rhodes at long-on. The end of Trott’s chanceless innings arrived when he hit Patterson high towards the square leg boundary where Jack Leaning positioned himself well for the catch. The former England batsman had received 135 balls and stroked 11 boundaries. At 214 for 5 in the 46th over, Warwickshire needed some quick runs and they were supplied by Clarke and then Evans who blasted his way to 48 not out off 30 balls with three fours and two sixes.Clarke was caught on the boundary edge after Lyth had signalled he did not know whether he had taken the ball cleanly, but Evans’ clean-hitting helped Warwickshire to boost their total as they claimed 104 from the last 10 overs.

Stone's freak injury rules him out for the season

Olly Stone’s freak injury while celebrating the dismissal of Moeen Ali has taken on even darker consequences after he was ruled out for the season with serious knee damage

Olly Stone, one of England’s most promising pace bowlers, has made an ever-more unfortunate entry in the ranks of cricket’s oddest injuries. He is now expected miss the rest of the season after damaging an anterior cruciate ligament during a wicket-taking celebration.Stone, 22, fell awkwardly after leaping skywards in delight at having Moeen Ali caught behind in Northamptonshire’s NatWest Blast tie against Worcestershire at Northampton on Friday. After falling, he attempted to finish his over, but collapsed in his delivery stride and was carried off the field.Any brief sense of amusement at Stone’s predicament dissipated even further when scans revealed the serious extent of the injury. Stone, afflicted by injuries during a disrupted and occasionally devastating career, has suffered a “compact knee injury with anterior cruciate ligament and cartilage involvement”. He has now been referred to a specialist surgeon.Stone’s season has been relatively unspectacular. He has taken six wickets in three matches in Division Two of the Specsavers Championship and three wickets in three NatWest T20 Blast fixtures.Northants’ small squad has been stricken by injury and they may be forced to look for further reinforcements to get through the season.

£60k p/w Newcastle Ace Hails Fans Amid Top Four Dream

Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope has hailed the Toon Army as "mad" when looking back on his first season on Tyneside.

Are Newcastle a serious top four threat?

The Magpies have had a season to remember thus far with a spot inside the top four a serious possibility with just several games remaining in the season.

Newcastle have not played Champions League football in around two decades, but Eddie Howe's men look set to deliver elite European football on Tyneside.

This weekend will see the Toon go up against one of their main rivals for the top four in Tottenham Hotspur with three points opening a six-point gap on the Londoners.

It was almost the perfect start to life at St. James' Park for Pope with the Toon making it to the Carabao Cup final but tasting defeat against Manchester United.

And speaking about his first campaign on Tyneside, the 31-year-old has praised the Newcastle faithful for their influence on the team.

Indeed, speaking on Ben Foster's 'Fozcast', the England international has hailed the Toon Army as "mad" in the build-up to their trip to Wembley:

(45:20) "I think the first foray into Champions League football for a few years would be a massive tick-off. You saw the reaction to getting to a cup final itself in the League Cup and fans in Trafalgar Square, inside the ground like mad, like the build-up to that game was crazy because it had been so long since a cup final and, you know, a chance to win something. And the second leg [vs Southampton] to have that St. James' was like unbelievable."

How good has Nick Pope been for Newcastle?

It is perhaps no coincidence the arrival of the 31-year-old has seen Newcastle's defensive record dramatically improve over the course of the season.

Last season, the Magpies found themselves conceding 62 goals which saw them rank as the sixth-worst defence in the top flight.

In comparison, Newcastle have dramatically turned around their fortunes at the back as they boast the league's best defence having only conceded 24 goals.

Newcastle United fans prepare for their Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

Of course, it is a group effort and there also has to be a lot of credit given to the Newcastle defence which also includes a number of new recruits.

However, only David de Gea (14) has bettered Pope's return of 13 clean sheets this season in the Premier League.

And adding to his impressive record, the £60k-per-week shot-stopper was able to bring an end to Ivan Toney's stunning record of scoring 22 consecutive penalties.

Club legend Alan Shearer clearly approves of the 31-year-old's addition to the side having hailed him as "brilliant" earlier in the year.

And it is clear to see why when he ranks inside the top fifth percentile for percentage of shots saved (via FBref).

At just 31, Pope could still have many years left in him between the sticks at St. James' Park and it is apparent he is loving life on Tyneside.

West Ham: Cornet could replicate Antonio

Maxwel Cornet is nearing a return to action for West Ham after five months on the sidelines and David Moyes could repeat a tactical masterclass by turning the winger into a striker at the London Stadium.

The Ivory Coast international started impressively in West Ham colours following his £17.5m switch from Burnley in the summer, notching five assists in just nine games, while he was denied his first goal for the club after a controversial VAR call in the defeat against Chelsea.

Last season saw the former Lyon man hit nine Premier League goals for Burnley, with Sean Dyche often utilising the versatile forward as a striker alongside target man Wout Weghorst, and this is something Moyes could take advantage of as he looks to turn the Hammers’ goalscoring woes around.

In a recent interview with Claret and Hugh, the Scottish manager said: “I don’t know about pecking order but, where I see him fitting in is that he can do a couple of roles. When you look back to how he played at Burnley, he played a couple of roles, he played almost alongside Wout Weghorst as another striker.”

He later revealed that he thinks Cornet’s best position is on the left, but given that the Hammers were one of the lowest scorers in the division before last weekend’s 4-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest, something needs to change in the attack.

Wednesday night saw West Ham lose 3-1 to Manchester United, with Michail Antonio highlighting his inadequacies as the sole striker in the Hammers’ attack, with the Jamaican seemingly no longer capable of excelling as a Premier League striker.

However, it has arguably been under Moyes that Antonio has shown his best form as a striker in the top flight, hitting ten goals from a central striker position in each of the last three campaigns, having featured as a full-back and winger in his previous spells with Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest.

Like Antonio, the £65k-per-week Cornet is a versatile player with power and pace, and his goalscoring record in the top flight last season certainly suggests that he could do a job in West Ham’s attack, as Antonio and summer signing Gianluca Scamacca continue to struggle, with just six top-flight goals between them so far this term.

Alan Shearer labelled Cornet “dangerous” on Match of the Day 2, earlier in the season and there seems no reason why he couldn’t follow in the footsteps of Antonio at West Ham if Moyes were to try him out as a striker when he gets back to full fitness.

Tottenham tracking Giorgi Mamardashvili

Tottenham Hotspur are tracking Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili as a replacement for Hugo Lloris, according to a report.

The Lowdown: Tottenham eyeing goalkeeper

With Lloris now at the age of 36, Tottenham have identified the need for a new goalkeeper, and they have been linked with several potential options, including the likes of Robert Sanchez and Jordan Pickford.

However, Pickford has now signed a new long-term contract with Everton and interest in Sanchez is high, with Chelsea also being named as potential suitors, so Spurs may have to look at players from abroad…

The Latest: Mamardashvili tracked

As per a report from Football London and reliable journalist Alasdair Gold, the Lilywhites have been tracking Mamardashvili for the past couple of seasons, and they could be presented with the perfect opportunity to bring him in this summer.

With Valencia struggling financially, it is detailed that they could be willing to accept an offer far lower than the marquee £88m release clause included in their goalkeeper’s contract, opening the door for a potential move to north London.

It’s added that the La Liga side’s ‘perilous position’ could also boost Spurs in their pursuit of Mamardashvili.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-4/” title=”Tottenham latest news” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/cropped-tottenham-fans.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Get it done?

Hailed as ‘fantastic’ by members of the media, the 6 foot 6 colossus has featured in a struggling Valencia side this season, but he has still managed to put in some very solid displays, ranked by Sofascore as the club’s fourth-best performing player in La Liga.

Not only that, but there are signs that the Georgian would be an upgrade on Lloris, given that he has recorded a better save percentage and a higher crosses stopped percentage than Spurs’ current first choice over the past year.

Considering he is just 22-years-0ld, Mamardashvili would be an excellent long-term addition to Antonio Conte’s side, capable of being the number one for well over a decade to come, and the fact he could be available for cheaper than anticipated gives Tottenham all the more reason to pursue a deal.

Rangers: Kent deal could include clauses

Ex-Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson believes Ryan Kent could be offered a release clause in a new Gers contract in order to keep him at Ibrox.

The Lowdown: Kent’s future

There is real concern at Ibrox that Kent may be heading towards the exit door, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season and no extension appearing to be close.

The 26-year-old first arrived in Glasgow four seasons ago, and after a successful loan move to the SPFL from Liverpool, he was made a permanent Rangers player for £7.5m, with a 20% sell-on clause also included in the deal (via Sky Sports).

The Latest: Ferguson’s belief

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, former Gers captain Ferguson reiterated his belief that Kent will remain at Ibrox next season – but admitted the club may have to offer the incentive of a buyout clause to persuade him to stay.

He said: “I still 100% believe he will sign a new contract.

“But I think there’ll be clauses in it, because they’ll say something like, if he signs a new three-year contract, maybe after next season or whatever, if you’re still producing the goods and somebody comes in and hits that clause in a transfer fee, then you can go.

“But it just looks to me, he’s got a good relationship with Michael Beale – that’s clear to see, and that’s showing out on the pitch.”

The Verdict: Seems likely

With Kent still an important player at Ibrox and Ferguson’s comments on the relationship between the Englishman and Beale growing, it’s unsurprising that there remains a belief he could remain a Rangers player after this season.

Kent’s registered 11 goal involvements so far in the league this term, with him starting every game under Beale so far as the Gers look to close the nine-point gap to Celtic – but what may be more important for Kent’s future will be entering the qualifying rounds of the Champions League.

With European football on offer again at Ibrox, we think Kent could remain happy to stay given the option by way of a potential release clause opening him up for a return to England to finally give the Premier League a go one day.

But in the meantime, competing on the continent for Rangers – having been beaten Europa League finalists and Champions League participants in the last 12 months alone – may be what Kent needs to bide his time and wait for the perfect offer rather than become a free agent in the summer.
