Parvez Hossain Emon doesn’t like throwing his wicket away after a good start, but he will not step back from his natural instincts in the third ODI against Sri Lanka on Tuesday. Parvez made a rapid 67 in the second game, which Bangladesh won by 16 runs. It kept them in contention going into Tuesday’s match, and also broke their eight-match losing streak.Parvez rued getting out after making 67 off 69 balls, when Wanindu Hasaranga beat him with a subtle googly.”I didn’t bat long in the last match,” Parvez said on the eve of the third ODI. “I was feeling guilty after getting out because I was set and the wicket was beautiful. I could have scored a hundred that day, and I felt bad about it. [Towhid] Hridoy was unfortunate; he got run-out. We have been talking about it. If we get set, we need to play long innings. We have to be consistent. If we score runs early and consistently, it will be easier for the team to do well.”Related

Batting first in the second ODI, Bangladesh were bowled out for 248 with Parvez and Towhid Hridoy getting fifties. The visitors have shown a tendency to play a high-risk shot much before getting to a decent score in this ODI series.Parvez said that he is hopeful of getting a good start in the third ODI at the Pallekele International Stadium, a ground which is regarded as one of the better batting wickets in Sri Lanka. Parvez himself has looked in good form, particularly after his breakthrough century against UAE in the T20I series in May.”I try to assess the situation, and play accordingly, and I try to play my natural game,” he said. “I don’t have any set target. I spoke to the guys who have played here earlier, and everyone is saying this wicket will be good for batting. I will try to play a big innings if I get a start.”Parvez also talked about his dismissal in the second ODI, when Hasaranga beat him with a lovely delivery. He said that he missed the line of the ball, but generally felt comfortable playing the Sri Lanka legspinner.”He is a good bowler, but he didn’t give me much trouble,” Parvez said. “I just missed the line on that delivery. Legspinners are important in world cricket, and Rishad [Hossain] is also doing well for us. I am sure if he gets a chance, he will do well.”Bangladesh’s players have a bit of their confidence back after Saturday’s win in Colombo. Parvez said that they are eager to grab the opportunity for the series win.”This is a big chance for us. If we win the match tomorrow, it will be a great series win,” he said. “Everyone is feeling confident. After the win in the last match, the confidence has been building among us, so we will try our best to win tomorrow.”

Newcastle United have a big one this weekend, with title-chasing Arsenal coming to St. James’ Park in search of three points in the Premier League.
Perhaps boasting the two meanest backlines in English football, Arsenal and Newcastle typically play out hard-fought encounters, but the Magpies have shown themselves to have a strong advantage when on Tyneside, and Eddie Howe will hope to apply that once again on Sunday,

Newcastle have kept four clean sheets from five Premier League fixtures so far this term, but have also struggled for their attacking sparkle.
It’s been a testing start to the season for homegrown star Lewis Miley. The 19-year-old brims with potential but was harshly criticised after the Cherries stalemate, and the manager may want to take him out of the firing line.
Why Howe should drop Lewis Miley
Howe said that the incendiary remarks, few though they were, were “totally unjustified” after Newcastle played out a drab goalless draw on the south coast.
Described as a “really good young player” by his teammate Joelinton, who rebuilt himself at Newcastle after a tough start of his own, Miley’s natural eye for a pass and his high work rate suggest he could be a real force for the Toon in the years to come.
But Howe needs to manage his rising prospect, for sure. Bruno Guimaraes is bound to return to the starting line-up against the Gunners, and Howe is likely to revert to his more compressed and accomplished three-man midfield.
Miley, let’s not forget, is a teenager and an academy star. He has a big future on Tyneside, but Joe Willock, who has also flattered to deceive this term, faces a steep fight for his future under Howe’s wing.
Newcastle's "disappointing" star has lost his place
Guimaraes missed out as Newcastle drew 0-0 with Bournemouth last weekend, ending his 67-match run of starts in the Premier League.
He returned in midweek and will be ready to influence from the outset once again as Arsenal look to chase Liverpool following the first-placed Reds’ defeat at Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.
Howe has various combinations he can tinker with in the engine room, but it’s certain that unleashing Willock from the start must not be among them. The versatile midfielder flattered to deceive when awarded a start in Guimaraes’ place last weekend,
Having been branded as “disappointing” a year ago by The Athletic’s Chris Waugh, Willock’s innate ability on the ball and his progressive athleticism have never been up for debate, but injuries have been his enemy on Tyneside of late, and he’s now blown a golden opportunity to lay down his marker and take a starting spot.
Branded with a 4/10 match rating by the Chronicle Live during that clash against Bournemouth on the south coast, ‘unable to make any sort of impact’.
Newcastle have their tried-and-tested midfield trident, and they should start against Arsenal. Miley deserves another shot to make a positive impression off the bench, but Willock’s days at the club appear to be numbered at this stage.

Transfer deadline day has come and gone, and thankfully, Kobbie Mainoo remains a Manchester United player, having been heavily linked with an exit in the last knockings of the window.
An unused substitute in the opening two Premier League games of the season – having also been afforded just mere minutes off the bench in the Europa League final back in May – the 20-year-old appeared to have his heart set on a loan exit from Old Trafford, amid the search for increased game time.
This is a World Cup year after all, with the United academy graduate firmly out of the England picture at present, despite playing a starring role in the knockout stage run at Euro 2024 just last year.
Having seen Thomas Tuchel elect to recall forgotten man Ruben Loftus-Cheek after a six-year absence this week, Mainoo’s place in the midfield pecking order is evident. He needs to get back playing regularly again.
Once the shining light under Erik ten Hag, the local hero is yet to win over Ruben Amorim. Something needs to change.
Mainoo's rise – and 'fall' – at Man Utd
This writer was there the day that a 16-year-old Mainoo truly announced himself to the Old Trafford faithful with a fine FA Youth Cup final display in May 2022, producing a composed, eye-catching performance at the base of midfield that has since become his trademark.
Kobbie Mainoo
Fleeting first-team opportunities for the then-teenager followed in 2022/23 – just three to be precise – before he was belatedly unleashed the following campaign, having gradually been introduced after being struck down by injury during pre-season.
From his Man of the Match display away at Everton on just his first Premier League start, Mainoo simply didn’t look back over the next six months, with notable highlights including that late winner at Molinuex, alongside his stunning curler at home to Liverpool.
Such a remarkable rise was capped by his Wembley heroics in May 2024, a year on from the midfield maestro having been singled out by Ten Hag as the senior set-up celebrated their Carabao Cup triumph.
For all the negativity that surrounds the Dutchman, his faith in Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho was more than admirable. Amorim, take note.
Indeed, had it not been for Mainoo’s inclusion in the squad at Burnley last weekend, United would have been at risk of abandoning an 85-year tradition. Since 1937, an academy player has featured in every matchday squad.
That may seem trivial, but this is the essence of Manchester United. Amorim can’t lose that.
In the Portuguese’s defence, however, it isn’t as if he won’t put faith in young talents when suitable. He appears to have settled on his own boy wonder during his Red Devils tenure thus far.
Leny Yoro is the new boy wonder at Man Utd
Question marks remain over the new INEOS regime at Man United, with notable low points including the protracted pursuit – and subsequent dismissal – of Dan Ashworth, alongside the indecision regarding Ten Hag’s future following the FA Cup final.
Throw into the mix the ongoing off-field issues which have clouded the club in recent times, namely a string of redundancies under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s watch, and the new-look hierarchy still have a way to go to win over an expectant and committed fanbase.
That being said, an optimist could look to the odd success story on the transfer front thus far, with the capture of Leny Yoro an obvious case in point.
Poached from Lille on a £52m deal last summer, amid rival interest from the mighty Real Madrid, the ability to entice the teenage Frenchman appeared to be a real coup at the time. Just over 12 months on, and that remains the case even more so.
While an injury sustained against Arsenal last summer halted his introduction to Premier League football, in a similar vein to Mainoo a year earlier, the 19-year-old grew into the campaign in impressive fashion, following his competitive debut in December.
The doubters will look to his performance against Southampton, and more specifically against Kamaldeen Sulemana, as a reason for concern, but that was a rare blot on the copybook for a player yet to realise his full potential.
That night at the Theatre of Dreams aside, Yoro has looked simply sublime under Amorim, seemingly relishing his role at right centre-back or left centre-back in this much-discussed 3-4-2-1 system.
From his last-ditch challenge on Darwin Nunez away at Anfield, to his vital header out in Lyon, 2025 has proven to be the year of Yoro thus far, none more so than amid that Europa League run.
While others of more seniority and authority faltered around him, the £115-per-week talent – as per Capology – was a real driving force during that surge to Bilbao. Indeed, he quite literally drove Amorim’s men up the pitch from deep at any available occasion, namely against Athletic Club to tee up Mason Mount’s crucial curler.
Described as a “generational” talent by Statman Dave, Yoro ranked in the top 3% of centre-backs in the competition for progressive carries per 90 last term, as per FBref, as well as in the top 7% for pass completion.
Tipped to be ‘the new Rio Ferdinand’ by Amorim, he also started the new campaign in fine fettle, averaging 3.4 tackles and interceptions per game in the top-flight, as per Sofascore, while winning 82% of his aerial duels thus far.

Positions are up for grabs across the park, but Yoro’s starting berth appears almost nailed on. Was it any coincidence that when afforded a rare rest for the trip to Grimsby, the team simply fell apart defensively?
Only six players have made more United appearances since Amorim walked in the door, with the youngster’s importance to both his manager and his team only looking set to grow and grow.
Every manager appears to have their favoured rising star when in the United dugout, and while Yoro may not be a product of the academy like Mainoo, he represents everything that this new regime should be looking for to build around.

Harry Kane has urged Bayern Munich to start their Champions League campaign strongly as they prepare to face Chelsea on Wednesday night. The England striker is determined to avoid the “stressful period” Bayern endured last season when they were forced into an extra playoff. Kane insists an early run of wins is crucial to easing the pressure.
Bayern in strong form ahead of Champions League opener
Bayern Munich head into their Champions League opener in fine form after thrashing Hamburg 5-0 in the Bundesliga at the weekend. Kane scored twice in that match, taking his tally to eight goals in the new campaign. The Bavarians will now turn their attention to Chelsea, who arrive in Munich as reigning FIFA Club World Cup champions, and Kane has urged the Bundesliga champions to start the tournament strongly.

Kane wants Bayern to start strong in the Champions League
Speaking about the importance of a strong start, Kane told reporters: "It's important to finish in the top eight because these additional playoff games make a big difference for the season. Last season that was our most stressful period. It made a huge difference. We need six wins or five with a few draws. That's why it's important to have a good start right away."
England captain vital to Bayern's UCL chances
Kane remains Bayern’s talisman, and his goals could be decisive as they aim for a seventh European crown. With Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies sidelined, the striker’s form is even more vital for Vincent Kompany’s side. Chelsea, meanwhile, have made a promising start following their Club World Cup triumph, meaning Bayern will need to be at their sharpest to see off Enzo Maresca's men.

Leeds United are building for their return to the Premier League under Daniel Farke and have now set their sights on a talented forward, according to reports.
Farke makes Leeds United plans for Bamford clear
Making an impressive start to pre-season, the Whites came away from their first encounter against Manchester United with a goalless draw that will have provided a platform to build on as they sharpen up for the new campaign.
Speaking after the match, Farke confirmed Patrick Bamford isn’t in Leeds United’s plans this term, signalling that he is ready to take ruthless decisions to streamline his squad.
He explained: “With Patrick (Bamford), I had a really open and honest conversation. I would have preferred a completely fit Patrick Bamford in the last two seasons. He knows how much I rate him as a person.
“It was the second day of pre-season when I told him in my office that he wasn’t part of my plans for the upcoming Premier League season, due to the fact that he’s had really difficult years over the past few years.”
Sean Longstaff has recently arrived at Leeds United for £12 million to add another layer of top-flight quality to their engine room. Meanwhile, Farke is also plotting a move to hijack Marseille’s pursuit of versatile Juventus forward Timothy Weah.

Deals are beginning to multiply at Elland Road, with Hoffenheim midfielder Anton Stach seemingly the latest arrival at the Whites after Fabrizio Romano delivered his famous ‘here we go’ tagline to signal that he will come in to bolster the ranks.
Now, Leeds have made contact for a Premier League forward that they have been reportedly interested in tempting to Yorkshire.
Leeds United make contact to sign Marc Guiu on loan
According to a report from Transferfeed, Leeds United have made contact to sign Chelsea forward Marc Guiu on loan after previously looking to sign the youngster before he moved to Stamford Bridge from Barcelona.

Despite a lack of minutes last term, the 19-year-old scored six times in 16 appearances across all competitions, with his tally coming entirely in the Europa Conference League.

Labelled “exquisite” by Joe Cole, he was also compared to Luis Suarez by the former England international, who stated off the back of his goal against Astana last December: “Marc Guiu must have watched Luis Suarez as a young man at Barcelona.”
Expectedly, any prospect of Guiu moving on this summer may depend on whether Nicolas Jackson is sold by Chelsea amid interest from elsewhere in the Senegal international.
Ultimately, Leeds are in need of a striker and the Granollers-born star could be an ideal solution to add some firepower ahead of an exciting campaign back in the big time.
Tottenham Hotspur could soon enter talks to sign an “aggressive” player, who is a top target for Newcastle United, according to a report.
Tottenham set sights on new defenders
It is no surprise that Tottenham are looking to upgrade their defence this summer, given that they shipped 65 goals in the Premier League last season, the second-highest number of any side to finish outside the relegation zone.
A new centre-back may also be required to replace Cristian Romero, with the Argentina international’s future now in north London in major doubt, given that the Lilywhites reached an agreement in principle over a sale to Atletico Madrid last week.
As such, Spurs have now added a number of centre-backs to their transfer shortlist, and they appear to be particularly keen on bringing in a young defender from the Serie A.

According to a report from Caught Offside, Tottenham could also attempt to hijack one of their Premier League rivals, with it being revealed they could soon enter talks over a deal to sign Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini.
Scalvini has been identified as a top target by Newcastle, and the Magpies remain keen on securing his signature, while Manchester United, Chelsea and a whole host of clubs from the Serie A are also named as potential suitors.
Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini
A move for the centre-back may be on the expensive side, however, with a deal likely to amount to around €60m (£52m), given that the 21-year-old is one of the most highly sought-after young defenders in Europe.

"Aggressive" Scalvini impressing in the Serie A
It is little wonder the youngster is attracting the interest of a number of Europe’s top clubs, having established himself as a regular starter for Atalanta over the past three seasons, making 33 Serie A appearances in the 2023-24 campaign.
During that time, the Italy international has caught the eye of scout Ben Mattinson, who believes the starlet could also be capable of playing in defensive midfield, given his “aggressive” style and ability in possession of the ball.
The Atalanta ace is also held in very high regard by commentator Sam Mulliner, who believes he could be capable of eclipsing Inter Milan defender and compatriot Alessandro Bastoni.
With Romero edging closer to an exit, it is clear that Thomas Frank needs to bring in a new centre-back this summer, and Scalvini has all the qualities to be a success in north London, so it is promising news that Spurs could look to hijack Newcastle’s deal.
With Anthony Elanga already on the way, Newcastle United are now reportedly “keen” to beat Chelsea in the race to sign a talented striker who would be an instant upgrade on Callum Wilson.
Newcastle still in the market for a striker
After confirming Wilson’s decision to leave the club at the end of his contract, Newcastle are still on the hunt for another striker to provide competition for Alexander Isak and William Osula.
The veteran forward confirmed the news of his departure, taking to social media to say: “To all you Magpies, it’s time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years at the Toon.
Newcastle United'sCallumWilsonsalutes their fans after the match
“Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights. I am so proud to have worn the iconic number 9 shirt and to have added a little more history to it.
“Scoring at the Gallowgate end really is as special as they say. All good things come to an end, but there’s no doubt Newcastle United will always have a place in mine and my families hearts.”
As one striker leaves, however, another could be on his way this summer. Those at St James’ Park have instantly turned towards Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, according to reports, and there’s no doubt that he would round off an excellent list of attacking options at Eddie Howe’s disposal.
As impressive as Wissa is, though, he’s not the only name on the Magpies’ radar, and they may well turn towards an even better alternative ahead of next season.
Newcastle now "keen" to sign Ekitike – Romano
According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle are now “keen” to sign Hugo Ekitike ahead of Chelsea this summer.
The talented Frenchman has attracted plenty of interest in recent months, including from Saudi Arabia and Liverpool, but those at St James’ Park will be hoping to make their biggest statement yet by winning the race for his signature.
The deal won’t come cheap given that previous reports have claimed that Frankfurt will demand as much as €100m (£85m) to sell their star striker this summer, but Ekitike could prove to be worth that hefty fee.

The former Paris Saint-Germain forward was described as “strong” by analyst Ben Mattinson last season as he rounded off a fantastic season with 22 goals in all competitions. And now, it should come as no surprise that a hectic race is forming for his signature.
